In 2012, Néw Yorker writer David Denby wrote a profile of me. He traveled to hear me speak about the absurd attacks on public schools and teachers and read “The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice Are Undermining Education.” He joined me in April 2012 when I spoke at Rutgers in Néw Jersey, and we drove back to Néw York City together. He said he had two ideas for me. One, he said, I should start blogging so more people could hear my views. And two, I should write another book, going into detail about solutions. I did both. I started this blog, and I wrote “Reign of Error.”
David, for his part, wrote a wonderful new book based in his experiences sitting in classrooms and listening to high school students discuss literature. It is called “Lit Up: One Reporter. Three Schools. Twenty Four Books That Can Change Lives.”
And he wrote this article about the recent and current outrageous attacks on teacher, blaming them for every social ill. It appears in the current issue of The Néw Yorker.
“A necessary commonplace: Almost everyone we know has been turned around, or at least seriously shaken, by a teacher—in college, maybe, but often in high school, often by a man or a woman who drove home a point or two about physics, literature, or ethics, and looked at us sternly and said, in effect, You could be more than what you are. At their best, teachers are everyday gods, standing at the entryway to the world. If they are fair and good, they are possibly the most morally impressive adults that their students will ever know. For a while, they are the law, they are knowledge, they are justice….
“By the time kids from poor families of all races enter kindergarten, they are often significantly behind wealthier children in vocabulary, knowledge, and cognitive skills. Of course, good teachers can help—particularly that single teacher who takes a kid in hand and turns him around. But, in recent years, teachers have been held responsible for things that may often be beyond their powers to change. They are being assaulted because they can be assaulted. The real problem is persistent poverty.
“Our view of American public education in general has been warped by our knowledge of these failing kids in inner-city and rural schools. In particular, the system as a whole has been described by “reformers” as approaching breakdown. But this is nonsense. There are actually many good schools in the United States—in cities, in suburbs, in rural areas. Pathologizing the system as a whole, reformers insist on drastic reorganization, on drastic methods of teacher accountability. In the past dozen or so years, we’ve seen the efforts, often led by billionaires and hedge-fund managers and supported by elected officials, to infuse K-12 education with models and methods derived from the business world—for instance, the drive to privatize education as much as possible with charter schools, which receive public money but are independently run and often financed by entrepreneurs. This drive is accompanied by a stream of venom aimed at unions, as if they were the problem in American education.”

Thank you Diane. This cleans the palate. The political situation could be divisive. I respect the diversity of views. Myself and others want to avoid waiting another 4 or 8 years on top of the last 13 or more years and the loss of another generation of young humans to draconian education while the incoming professionals who will take the helm for 20-40 years are indoctrinated and reinforced to practice dehumanization and ignoring their gut instincts. Many times “gut instincts” should be ignored or at the very least tempered with some serious “reality checks”. I’ve found my gut instincts/first impressions to be wrong more often than to be spot on.
One doesn’t need gut instincts to be able to fight against, prove wrong and/or throw a monkey wrench into the machinery when there are many rationo-logical means and proofs with which to counteract that dehumanization.

The article is okay but still quite a ways to go to get Denby to the point of not using the edudeformer and privatizer language/memes.

Horse manure, we DO KNOW how to “educate poor inner-city and rural kids”. But we are not willing to pay for the services needed, smaller class sizes, social services, proper screening and addressing the needs of the students from the first day they attend school, etc. . . .

Well, it works out pretty well for government and private sector leaders, blaming everything in the world on 1. public schools and 2. the quality of the US workforce.
Obviously it’s easier for them to point to others than if we looked at their role in any of these problems. We somehow never get to that part of the “debate”

Here’s an example of the things our political and private sector leaders would rather than not talk about:

Companies bruised by the recession have stayed lean by automating and outsourcing core functions while slashing training budgets and payrolls. But in an effort to cut costs, some companies also have cut entry-level jobs that serve as a crucial first step on the path to a professional career. And others have made the responsibilities for first-timers more sophisticated, raising the bar for new graduates, who are expected to arrive job-ready from day one.
These developments may be making it more difficult for some young adults to gain a foothold in the labor market, economists say. The unemployment rate for people 20- to 24-years-old is falling as the economy recovers, but remained at a historically high 11.3% in July. Young adults lacking college degrees are having an especially hard time finding entry-level jobs.”
We could talk about why the the private sector doesn’t offer entry level jobs anymore, but it’s easier and less politically risky to just attribute all economic issues to poor education and a low quality workforce. Works out really well for them. I think that’s why it’s so wildly popular.

Diane’s words are inspirational and down-right true. She is telling all of us, both parents and teachers alike, on the grassroots level to see things, all these horrendous errors in education, as they truly are.. She also urges us to get up and fight against corporate takeover of public education and profiteering trends. As she anticipated before, I still believe that bad things do not last forever.

But there is a crucial ESSENTIAL QUESTION that leads to an inescapable reality… WHY did they NEED to remove the teachers, even if it meant totally negating the rights of these professionals as Americans— not to mention the immorality of the process.
WHY take out the PROFESSIONAL PRACTITIONERS of a complex discipline in such great numbers by any means, even abrogating their civil rights and human dignity?
Simple answer: the real professional teacher would not use the common core crap!
Real teachers meet the age-appropriate outcomes BY DESIGNING THE LESSONS THEMSELVES, including thE CRUCIAL elements that MOTIVATE CHILDREN and REWARD THEM FOR LEARNING!
Why remove the real professional teacher-practitioner, the ‘grunt’ on the line facing children, the only one who knows what LEARNING LOOKS LIKE ? Well, because of that — the teacher also knows what it does NOT resemble. No successful doctor would KNOWINGLY use a procedure or medicine that would hurt a patient.
The real teacher assesses performance each day IN ORDER TO PLAN the necessary lessons to meet the needs of those kiddies who sit in front of her.
NOW GET THIS…because this came from the REAL RESEARCH ON STANDARDS FOR LEARNING: TESTS are the provenance of the CLASSROOM TEACHER!
It is the job of Teachers to assess & evaluate in order to plan the next lesson. At the end of the year, performance was always easily recognized, if the expectations for outcomes were clear from the get-go. OK! … all of you real teachers know this, but if the research had not vanished … POOF… and had been disseminated by the Secretary of Education (like it would have been if DIANE RAVITCH WAS IN THAT POSITION) then the PUBLIC might have realized what it is that REAL teachers do!
