Time to trash our nation’s public schools! Campbell Brown, joined with the pro-voucher American Federation for Children, is sponsoring a debate on education among the GOP candidates in New Hampshire today. Don’t expect to hear anyone say anything positive about the public schools, which educate nearly 90% of the nation’s children.
Expect to hear how terrible our teachers are, how many need to be fired at once, how dismal our public schools are. You might conclude that we live in an impoverished third-world country from this kind of negativity.
You can be sure no one will acknowledge that NAEP test scores are the highest in the history of NAEP (since the early 1970s) for white, black, Hispanic, and Asian students.
You can be sure no one will note that graduation rates are at an all-time high and dropout rates are at an all-time low.
This is the first time ever, at least in my memory, that a highly partisan group (or two) have sponsored a primary debate. This is not the League of Women Voters, after all.
Why don’t supporters of public education sponsor a debate for the candidates? Why not ask them to explain their K-12 education plans? Ask them about high-stakes testing? What about privatization? Will they continue to send federal funds to for-profit colleges and charter schools? Will they continue to close schools because of their test scores?
There are many such questions. They need to be asked. They should be asked not by those who despise public education, but by those who understand that public education is a basic democratic institution that educates ALL children, not just those it chooses.

I can just imagine the types of questions that will be asked. “So, what do you think we should do with public school teachers? Should we execute them en masse, or would simply shipping them off to a reservation in Northern Alaska be sufficient?”

I am only appalled by the statement to execute public schools teachers or ship them to a reservation somewhere. No one deserves this, and we are a democracy.

Geez, Raj, do you live with your head in the sand? Do you think that’s not what Campbell Brown thinks of public school teachers? Listen to her rhetoric sometime. According to her, they’re a bunch of lazy, greedy, child-molesting, blood-sucking scum.
Yes, as TC mentioned, it was a “joke”, but satire, especially these days, runs close to reality. Given all the vile things Brown has said about teachers, why wouldn’t she favor mass execution/deportation?
TC – thanks for that Reagan quote – I’d forgotten that classic bit of St. Ronnie’s wisdom.

BTW, Raj, since you’re apparently so concerned about what people deserve, do teachers deserve the constant bashing and abuse from people like Campbell Brown and other politicians and talking heads? If not, where’s your concern trolling of them?

Why do you all, such intelligent commentators, give Raj so much of your time? Raj and his other shills (such as virginia and knows NO facrs) are placed here to deflect the conversation to utter nonsense. We would do more service to the public and to each other if we just ignore them.

Ellen, people try to educate Raj, and occasionally he tries to write something reasonably human, but of course, he still doesn’t get it, and he comes off as insincere. He once commented on something truthfully snarky that I wrote about her majesty Michelle Rhee, in her full defense – not that whatever I wrote wasn’t truthful or warranted. So, in his own way here today, though someone jokingly wrote about what Campbell and her ilk would like to do with teachers, he comes to Campbell’s defense by attacking a perceived attack on Campbell. See? Raj is good with the rhetoric, but perhaps someday he will be convinced that the reformers are the bad guys. As to that other thing, Virginia, it gets around and is violently pro-reform, so much so, it would be comical if it weren’t so sad.

Diane,
Not sure if you saw this book review.
I thought this was going to be a Reform puff piece, but was quite surprised to see that Zuckerberg had to learn the hard way that Poverty is the biggest factor in changing the lives of students. I wonder if he finally read your works or was just so disgusted by what happened to his money in Newark and all the backlash. It shows just how little Booker and Christie cared about his donation to help the kids when it could line the pockets of their friends.
I think you should contact the author and write a book or article together because so many reporters wear blinders when it comes to “Reform”

Thanks for this important link, schoolgal. Will definitely read this book. The photo of Booker and Christie looking at this young billionaire philanthropist, Zuckerberg, with such disdain for him, tells it all. They took his millions donated to improve Newark education, and they handed it over to Wall Street privatizer investors. Anyone who think Booker is a liberal is way off base. He works closely with his privatizer backers…including Oprah who loves him, as does her BFF, Gail. They bring up his name constantly and seek to qualify him for higher office. Hope everyone in NJ pays attention during the next election season.

Thank you both for checking this link out. The last line of the review made me think all he had to do was meet with Diane and his money wouldn’t have been wasted on Wall Street donors.
It’s really a disgrace what these pols did with the money, and I hope it’s used against Booker and Christie when they seek elections. NJ had the opportunity to vote in a better candidate–Rush Holt–who even the NYTimes said was an excellent representative, but felt Booker had the “appeal”. I always thought substance over popularity, but I was wrong. At least Zuckerberg learned an important lesson and that’s why this story must be told.

Hi- I want to thank you as well for the book recommendation.. People often ask me “Where did all that money go?” when they find out I am a teacher in Newark. I kind of shrug and tell them I have no earthly idea. ONE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS ! It is criminal that our kids did not seem to benefit from the money. Once I read this book, which I plan to do immediately, I suppose I will be able to answer the people who ask. I do love that Zuckerberg was not deterred by the shameful way his money was spent. Instead, he learned from the experience and now will continue donating but In a way that ensures his money will reach the children for whom it is intended. God bless him.

Zuckerberg who is amazingly still in his late 20s and a self made, not inherited, billionaire, will surely learn the vicissitudes and connivances of pols, and will use his future donations more wisely. I have faith that with his vast natural ability, age will temper his decisions. In this instance, his heart was in the right place….next time, his head will catch up, with a better result.

Why do they hold anti-public school forums inside public schools? Are we obligated to allow these folks into our schools to promote their careers/this agenda?
Public schools should start saying “thanks, but no thanks. We’re working in here. Campaign for this agenda somewhere else”.
Our kids really have to sit there while they pace off square footage for the Rocketship franchise? It’s going to be a LONG 2016 if all these clowns are parachuting into public schools.

They put a video up of Jeb Bush trashing public schools for 30 seconds and then promoting charter and private schools for 30 seconds.
So that’s fair and balanced! I’m objecting if any of these people enter my local public school. They can hold their campaign event at the Wal Mart.

Diane, you have asked important questions. Why isn’t there a GOP debate sponsored by pro – public school leaders? You may not be able to sponsor one but you are surely one of the most influential leaders in education who is not a government official in this country today. Although I do not agree with all of your views, I admire you and am deeply grateful for this blog and your books and work. But sometimes it feels as though we are preaching to the choir on this blog. Is there something that YOU can do to start the ball rolling on another type of debate with the candidates? Are there contacts that you can make that could be the beginning of an answer to your questions?

Wealthy anti-public school activist Betsy DeVos is partly responsible for the charter situation in Michigan, where 80% of charter schools are for-profit. That’s her record of success.
And of course John Kasich oversees Ohio’s stellar “charter sector”, where he’s right now stonewalling on a “sunshine law” records demand from the state’s largest newspaper relating to emails that were exchanged during a decision that was made to exempt well-connected charter schools from the test score rules public schools must follow.
One would think these folks wouldn’t have the time to travel to other states, what with the ed reform-created chaos in their own states.
Gosh, I hope people aren’t following Ohio’s ed reform plan. It’s an unmitigated disaster.

Get this — CHRISTIE WILL WORK WITH UNIONS!!! While in the same debate maintaining his desire to assault them.
He’d love to get along with Randi – if only she’d change he says. What change is he referring to? Breaking up her union? Apparently her failure to swallow reform whole is what he is really alluding to – the whole unions are the status quo thing.
He balances out his desire to punch though by making it a metaphor and saying the unions are punching “us” – on one side you have Christie with everyone else and on the other side are those greedy teachers. When did we stop being taxpayers and citizens?
