Paul Thomas, professor at Furman University, taught in South Carolina for 18 years. He is an eloquent and informed critic of social and education policy.
In this post, he poses five questions that every Presidential candidate should be asked (again and again).
I paraphrase his words and questions so you will read his post. They boil down to these principles:
Test-based accountability does not change the underlying social and economic conditions that cause disparate test results.
Test-based accountability has stripped teachers of their professional autonomy. As a result, fewer people choose teaching as a career.
Due to underlying economic inequality, children of color are more likely to be poor, to be segregated, to get fewer educational opportunities, to be suspended or expelled, and to have less opportunity to succeed in school and beyond. Tests don’t reduce income inequality or wealth inequality.
What, sir or madam, will you do to reduce these economic gaps instead of spending billions to measure them?

We can think of great questions for the candidates, but the winner has no obligation to tell the truth. Such was the story of Obama who courted teachers for their votes. After he gained the White House, he forgot all about public education. He has done everything in his power to coerce public schools into submission and scapegoat public teachers. His policies and his choice of Arne Duncan speak volumes. While Obama makes impassioned speeches supporting the middle class and women, his policies indicate he is a corporatist. All politicians are chameleons so it is difficult to determine which “truth” you are supporting during an election.

Cornel West always speaks his mind. My favorite quote. West bitterly describes Obama as “a black mascot of Wall Street oligarchs and a black puppet of corporate plutocrats. And now he has become head of the American killing machine and is proud of it.”

Bingo! Pres. Obama and his children only attended private schools. Mrs. Obama went to a magnet charter school. They never thought very highly of public schools. Plus their party already took teachers for granted. No matter what, teachers and their unions always vote democrat. So why should they bother to fight for the teachers’ vote? All they want is more money, but the teachers can not give them that, so in comes the crony capitalists.

Rand Paul, get rid of the dept. of Ed. Fiscal responsibility and shrinking the data collection industry. I’m looking forward to a race between Sanders and Paul.

I am in the process of summarizing the policies and rhetoric being fowarded to presidential candidates from several conservative think tanks.
What I am not finding is anything ready-to-go that will counter the agendas and sound bites they are in the process of honing.
