Readers asked me to post the names of the legislators in the Democratic-controlled State Assembly who voted for and against the New York state budget, which contains one of the worst–maybe THE worst–educator evaluations systems in the nation. It clearly was not created by anyone who ever worked in a school. It clearly was intended to demonize and demoralize teachers and principals. It even includes a provision that teachers will be evaluated by independent persons, recruited from outside their own school, who do a drop-by visit, not only undermining the authority of the principal but asserting the claim that a brief observation by a stranger is a good measure of teacher quality. The system is heavily weighted towards test scores, which has been refuted by the American Statistical Association. In New York, under the new approach, 50% of teachers’ evaluations will be based on test scores; the ASA says that the variance in test scores attributable to teachers is 1-14%.
So for the benefit of those who want to know, I am reproducing the chart of votes in the Assembly, developed by New York BATs and the New York State Allies for Public Education, a coalition of 50 parent and teachers groups:

Colorado has a pretty nasty teacher evaluation tool as well. And even if you don’t agree with my opinion, the fact is that it is costing the State of Colorado a lot of money that could be used to repair bridges and highways.
Voters, how do you want your tax money spent?

I’m a voter and not a teacher and I think it’s a huge waste of time and money.
The Ohio ranking system is ludicrously complex. The idea that parents are supposed to using this for “information” is absolute BS.
I read it. I have no idea what it measures or how it works. It goes on and on- they make it more complicated every year. It’s a joke.
I don’t know a single public school parent who relies on this information-not one. I would like to challenge any of my state legislators to explain how it works in plain language- their own words. I’d bet 500 dollars not one of them can do it. Yet they all endorse it!

” I have no idea what it measures . . . ”
I guarantee ya, Chiara, that it doesn’t measure a damn thing as it’s not a measuring device, yes it’s an assessing device but that is fundamentally different than a measuring device.

The Buffalo Teachers Federation reached out to the Western New York Delegates.
From the Assembly there were 6 nays and three yes, from the Senate 2 nays and three yes. I hope those who voted yes realize they just lost the teacher vote.

Thanks Diane. Unfortunately, this confirmed my hunch that my assembly man voted yes.

Ron Kim of Queens, NY campaigned on the promise he would stand up for our public education system, then voted against it…claiming he did what was best for New Yorkers. What is amazing is that he comes from a very affluent district and would sell its constituency out. He will always be remembered for selling out the people of New York…a member of the wall of shame.

WA. had 4 “progressive” state senators vote with a rightie, Steve Litzow, to jack up the % of student test scores on WA. teachers. Frockt (46th LD, UPenn), Habib (Rich LD, Yale), Pedersen (43rd LD, Yale), Kohl-Welles (36th LD, U.W.Proff)
IMNHO, THE PROBLEM is union “leaders” more concerned with their purported access and their seats at the kiddie table (bring your own spork, bib, diaper, sippy cup and bowl of mush.) => we do NOT support primary opponents to people who’ve sold us out, every year.

IT’S TIME to evaluate Democratic Politicians every 2 years
IT’S TIME to support 10 primary challengers for the WA. state legislature every 2 years. Every 2 years over 100 Washington State Representatives and Senators are up for re-election.
IT’S TIME to put up 1000 yard signs for 10 primary challengers on the 2 weeks after the deadline for candidates to file for office. At Boruck Printing & Silkscreen in Seattle, for $5000 you get 1000 plastic 2 sided 2 color signs and the metal thingies the signs go on. What candidate wouldn’t love to have their name on 1000 signs around a legislative district in the short window between filing and the primary? WEA spends hundreds of thousands of dollars every year in Olympia – what is 50 grand for 10 primary challengers?
IT’S TIME to evaluate all legislators all the time. Did they vote for anything that made things worse for our kids? Yes or No. Did they stand by while some legislation made things worse for our kids? Yes or No.

Hawley voted NO because he’s pandering to gun nuts in upstate not because he disagreed with the teacher evaluation. They want zero dollars funding the SAFE Act at the expense of anything else.
