In Pennsylvania, both Republicans and Democrats want to expand the state’s “tax credit” (aka voucher) program, allowing public funds to pay for private and religious tuition.
The tax credits drain funds from public school support, which is already inequitably funded and suffered deep budget cuts. The state’s public schools are in financial crisis, and the last thing they need is another stealth cut to their funding.
Why don’t the legislators put vouchers to a vote of the people? Are they afraid to find out how the public will respond?
Ultimately it is the voters fault (or wish?) for electing people that don’t support public education.
I know it’s an outrageous request. but could someone in government actually work on supporting public schools?
Isn’t that in the job description or requirements- expending some effort towards the schools 95% of children attend?
Their interest in public schools seems to begin and end with “testing season”. Incredible that we have thousands of public employees in government who can’t be bothered with public schools. Maybe they should give these state and federal jobs to people who have some interest in or passion for existing public schools? Just a suggestion!
I’m sort of mildly curious: are Democrats still lying to voters and claiming Democrats don’t support vouchers?
Obviously that’s not true at this point, right? Or are they hoping most voters remain uninformed on the Democratic position on privatization, which is identical to the GOP position on privatization?
How did we get to this point of having public funds being stolen to support private religious schools and private for profit schools??????
It started in the late 60s and early 70s with the “Moral Majority” when the religious political right decided to infiltrate school boards, starting religious “universities” and think tanks funded by billionaires and getting religious leaning politicos to do their bidding. We are seeing the end game of this, especially since that religious right decided to equate democracy and freedom of the political through libertarian neo-liberalism.
Nevada’s tea party legislation is hot to provide business tax credit vouchers. Pay for tuition for kids to private schools, get a tax break equal to it. This also robs the public schools…No one wants to do anything but privatize and destroy the schools here.
