Ed Berger lives in Arizona, where the forces of privatization are strong even though 85% of the state’s children attend public schools. Berger is active in his own home town with parents dedicated to saving their community schools from privatization. He has developed some simple guidelines to help others who want to support their community schools.

While I think we make several useful suggestions on a populist level, I think there is much more work to be done on a political level. A recurring theme of many posts is “follow the money.” If we do, we find the problem is that our government is promoting the destruction of public education by providing an institutionalized partiality to charter schools. This favoritism is the basis for the attacks; there is money to be made! Two laws that underscore this problem are the Community Renewal Tax Relief Act 2000 and the New Markets Tax Credit. Add to this the subtractability formula for public education with charter school expansion , and we have a recipe for disaster for public schools. If NCLB becomes portable, this will further incentivize the creation of more charter schools. A huge problem in this war is that the government is working against comprehensive education for America’s children! I don’t know how to do this, but we citizens must be the David that takes down the Goliath.
