Hundreds of students at Rio Grande High School in Albuquerque walked out to protest the PARCC tests. In their march to another high school, they blocked traffic.

Some students complained that they would be denied a diploma based on this one test. One student said it was so difficult that not even the teachers could pass it.
Meanwhile the Albuquerque school board warned students who walked out that they would be given a zero and would face other consequences.

Classic definition of bullying by the school board. Someone call the hotline!
Yes, and the best cure for bullying is for a crowd to stand up to the bully(ies). Any student who hasn’t yet walked out should take that as their cue to do so. They can’t seriously deny diplomas to every student in the state.
Tone from the OH Dept of Ed is interesting:
“Recently, many school districts have contacted the Ohio Department of Education asking if they will experience financial consequences for students who do not participate in Ohio’s New State Tests.
State law forbids the Ohio Department of Education from funding a student who does not take a state test in the prior school year. However, Ohio law also allows the state superintendent to issue a waiver that permits the department of education to fund that student the following school year. Under that authority, the department has, in the past, automatically funded these students for many years. We plan on continuing the same practice this year. This means that we will continue to fund each student in your district, regardless of their participation.”
Much less derisive and scolding than the national ed reform “movement” response.
I think it’s a smarter approach. Ross actually ran public school district(s) prior to this job so maybe experience is the key difference.

The kids should be suspended. New Mexico’s education system is one of the lowest performing in the nation and they are complaining that a test is too hard? That it has too many essays? Seriously?
“Lowest performing” based on what, test scores? So you think they need to keep taking tests? Why? To keep showing that they are the “lowest performing”? If you’re so concerned about what they’re not learning, why not use that test time to, gee, I dunno, learn?
How does the test help them learn?
Yes, Francis, suspend them. That’ll teach ’em a lesson, that disruption is only allowed when done by gazillionaires and educrats.
