I hope all those who dislike the current reforms of OBAMA-Duncan’s-GATES-BROAD-CUOMO-CHRISTIR-EMMANUEL-KLIEN-RHEE-BROWN&BUSH will realize that OPTING OUT is the best way to fight back.
As a start, all public employees should opt out their children. It would also help if Superintendents would show some courage and leadership. In NJ almost all our Superintendents shamefully cower in fear of upsetting Governor Christie.

If they get fired, they can work at a big-box department store stacking 80 ounce containers of ketchup.. Seriously, it’s all about personal survival at this point. Just quiet whispers in the hallways, knowing nods. “How much longer do you have?” “I can’t wait to get out.” It’s just like corporate America. “cover your ass.” Say, “yes, of course” all the time. I left corporate America to become a teacher and now we are all working for the corporation. What a dream! I have a picture of Costa Rica on my classroom wall, and I spend time staring at it, visualizing it. I feel like the character in “Shawshank Redemption.” One day, I will be retired, in the sun, and free.

Hope will SPRING eternal after our WINTER of discontent. How many more ways can they think of to aggravate us out the door? I am so flipping sick of the data minded thinking. Can we just flipping TEACH??? I would like to know what in the world teachers with children of their own do to find time for these mandates? I really would like to know. I can see teachers just making stuff up to get it all done. How many more hours in the day are we supposed to give to this profession for FREE? Gosh wouldn’t it be fun to do billable hours? I know……….the hope springs eternal.

I don’t know what teachers in the beginning or middle of their careers do, but during my last couple of years I did indeed “make stuff up.” And I didn’t feel a bit guilty either.

Right now I’m not even making anything up, I’m just not doing the data. I’m supposed to be being professionally developed on SLOs and SGPs but the principal in charge (at least they’re not having the staff to do their dirty work) hasn’t given me the O’Connor book yet and I even asked for it a couple of times just to “cover my ass”. We’re supposed to have read and discussed four of the chapters. He knows he doesn’t want me to read it because I’ll destroy the concepts at the meetings. When they ask why I haven’t done it I plan on pleading innocent as they didn’t professionally develop me properly.

Same here. I’m supposed to have written three SLOs and in the stupid meeting we had they didn’t really tell us how to do them at all. So I sort of faked it. I really do not care if I do them “right.”

My husband’s SLOs are a work of art. Once completed, they just need to be polished a little for the following year.
Pearson is missing the boat here. They should be selling a book of SLOs for teachers to pick and choose.

She did a nice job, but those puppets sitting there can’t do anymore than the local Communist leaders could in China. She moved to America at the wrong time. If she had moved here before 1980, she would have seen what she wanted. It is all a question of historical time. These days, she should have moved to Canada or Australia or northern Europe (one of the free zones left). She didn’t do her research and now she lives in what I like to call “McDonald’s Land”. Out of the Communist frying pan and into the Capitalist fire. At least she can still speak her mind. She is free to buy fast food and shop at Walmart. Living the dream!

Let me pose my response as a test question: If the test costs the taxpayers millions of dollars, which of the following should be true about the test?
a) test is proven to be a valid measure of student progress towards college and career
b) test results available immediately, including questions answered right and wrong, so the student, teacher and family can gauge how to best help the student improve
c) student, teacher and school have equal stake in student’s performance on the test
d) all of the above

a) has already been proven to be impossible by N. Wilson
b) since ‘a’ is impossible who gives a shit about ‘b’?
c) see ‘b)’ directly above
d) all of the above
e) it’s all a bunch of mental masturbation

My grand daughter (now in 7th grade) opted out last year. Less than 20% in her school chose the opt out option, probably because this primarily white, upscale school district is number one in the area. Also because the superintendent has instituted the sit and stare policy for those students opting out.
My grand daughter is a day dreamer, so it didn’t bother her. Anything was better to her than taking the CC assessments.
