The handover of public schools to private control is a defining feature of President Obama’s Race to the Top. Make no mistake, as the President likes to say, Race to the Top has been a mighty force for privatization. Although there are some charter schools that are managed by dedicated educators, the charter movement is now largely powered by ambition, a passion for control and power, and–yes–greed. In time–if not already–Race to the Top will be recognized as a historic disaster, an abandonment of our nation’s unfilled commitment to equal educational opportunity.
In this article, Paul Buchheit identifies four ways in which privatization perverts education.
First, privatization does not improve education.
Second, the profit motive perverts the goals of education.
Third, for-profit higher education has been an immense disaster.
Fourth, lower-performing children are left behind.

Too true.

And that is the ENTIRE POINT of the DEFORMS — DESTROY PUBLIC EDUCATION. What a country we live in…destroying public education. OY! Reprehensible and ALL for MONEY and to CONTROL. The CURRENT DEFORMS are truly hurting our nation. And WHO in Congress sends their kids to public schools? Obama sends his to Friends School. Would love to know where each of the DEFORMERS send their kids to school.

Great article. Too bad Huff Post is yet another pop media source that will now only accept comments from those who sign in with their real names via Facebook. This, in an era when our government, which now has two right-wing major parties, is spying on us pretty much assures a dearth of posts from progressives who are in fear of losing their jobs and support public education.

How many will “recognize” this if the traditional media is in the hands of the same people who are behind the end of public education? The government and media propaganda is already a Tsunami and the facts about what is really happening are not getting out easily to the general public.
