Blogger Yinzercation describes Governor Tom Corbett’s latest proposal as a “Race to the Top” that will benefit the highest-performing, most affluent districts. He learned his lesson from Arne Duncan. Forget about equity. Forget about restoring the draconian cuts he made to the state’s suffering urban districts. Forget about the have-nots. Forget about Philadelphia, whose schools were stripped of basic services and programs. Reward excellence!

Two republican governors eating out of the same $$$$$ corporate trough. Where do you think New Jersey got the RAC styrene from . Corvettes has gone on record admiring Christies educational reforms and stated that he used them as a model for his Pennsylvania initiatives. In this case visa versa applies. Philadelphia is going thru the same challenges that the city of Newsrk is being indoctrinated into. I say stop the madness now!
Support candidates that support home rule with individual accountability. I M tired of BOE being held hostage by decision made by state appointed Supt. and or state appointed fiscal monitors. I have seen millions waisted with no accountability just Blame for the communities.

As a parent in a high achieving suburban Philadelphia school district, I assure you that parents don’t want more of Corbett’s kind of “Excellence.” I have heard that his Department of Education strong arms high achieving districts into participating in his “Excellent” ideas. No public schools are left unharassed. I live very close to Philadelphia and there are many of us who support our neighbors in Philadelphia and want fair funding. We don’t want to “compete” in any more government schemes around here. We don’t want it at the expense of our teachers, and we certainly don’t want it at the expense of the children & teachers of Philadelphia. For the record, our once truly amazing schools are now being standardized and parents are sensing the change. At a meeting last fall, a parent of 5 kids couldn’t get over the change in the quality of education her youngest was getting compared to her older kids. In just a few short years, our state and federal government have succeeded in lowering the quality of education in “high achieving” districts, while irresponsibly ignoring the needs of our urban neighbors.
Parents who can are fleeing the schools here after 8th grade to avoid the Keystone graduation exams and so many of our kids (including my own) are left behind to deal with the mandates, ccss, and teaching to the test that make kids dislike learning. What a mess. Indeed, there are no silver bullets. The only bullets around are the ones putting an end to quality education one way or another in our state and country. The politician’s are shooting themselves in the foot for temporary financial gains.
This May’s Primaries matter more than ever. Please encourage everyone you know to research which candidates address the real issues and which carry on the status quo. You may be surprised. Vote.
