I’m a union girl. But I know that my union is huge and has become part of the privatizing problem – looking for money from big business and supporting politicians who take it too.
So I lobby them too.
Common Core is not supported by this member.
With everything going on in my state of Nevada – NEA spends money and gives us a grant to implement common core standards?
NEA likes to say that our “members” support common core. Really? In Nevada only half our teachers vote in elections but somehow NEA was able to poll us and determined we support common core? That is a lie.
The representative assembly considered this and while common core passed – this was NOT an issue for many states YET. Most representatives sat out and did not vote for or against – I was watching. States like California voted heavily NO. This was not an overwhelming mandate from the body to support. A third of the room stood against. Those of us oppressed by the system that no one paid us any money to implement said no. I had no voice at any level about common core. This was not democratically implemented.
Common core was developed by big business. They want all states to have the same standards – not to improve education – but to improve profit for themselves. Bill Gates will sell national software. Pearson will dominate our market with national programs and textbooks. The companies will no longer have to tailor Nevada products to Nevada. This is a national standard to create a national unified market so that corporations can make money.
And testing. Common core is great for test makers correct? We have a computer … so we must create systems to collect and compare data about our kids on a national level?
No one asked me what it is like filling out a report card with 128 standards.
No one considered developmental appropriateness for five year olds when creating the standards.
No one considered the diversity that is in my classroom when developing the standards.
No one asked me.
So don’t imply that I support such a system because I see it for what it is. It is no good for my students in poverty in urban Nevada. It doesn’t support language learners. It raises the bar? Not really. It does imply that every student in America fits into a cookie cutter.
I believe my union is selling out students and teachers on this issue instead of doing what is right. Authentic learning is more than a score.
We will regret this – just as we regret No Child Left Behind – which my union implied I supported too. It will oppress us. It will encourage more tests and scores and failures. It will measure teachers and compare us until we fail too. This will promote an elite agenda … doing very little and most likely harm the kids I serve and love.
No money or support – just churn- and failing kids left in the wake?
Unfunded mandates sold to us by big money and implemented without teacher voice or additional pay – sound familiar?
We have seen this before and the big question is … who is making money because we will be hard pressed to say it helped Vegas kids.
O God hear the words of my mouth, let my union be advocates and not waste our spare resources in directions that do not help our children.

None of the insanity will stop until teachers (not the unions, because they’re complicit in the corporate assault) decide to shut down the schools.
Start by teaching to the contract. Don’t start work a second sooner, or end a second later than your contract hours. Don’t bring any work home to do unless you’re compensated for it.
We need to fight fire with fire.

Wow… I’ve had that thought, tried to cut my hours down to the 40 for which I’m paid. But the truth is that I care too much about my students. Most of my extra work these days is trying to find ways to make school stay fun for them despite the increased demands on their intellectual abilities (the suits in charge call this “rigor”). I teach K, and I have to set them up for the next 12 years+. I know this is part of the problem– that teachers always get used because they can take away our pay, our benefits, our supply money, and constantly make us dance in circles to reinvent the wheel whenever they change our standards, and we will still work overtime because we can’t let those kids down. Times two if you teach poor kids, who often have nothing as stable in their lives as their classroom.

As a fellow Nevadan, in Clark County, I can vouch for the veracity of what the writer has stated. Here they are trying to de-certify the local association. I won’t say that our association hasn’t done some good, we undoubtedly would be worse off in regards to salary and benefits without collective bargaining, but it is getting harder to support those that support themselves and not the best interests of the students, parents,and the teachers. They did not ask me what I think of the Common Core either, I would like to know just whom the did survey.

I completely understand your opposition to Common Core and the way it is being implemented across the nation. I am concerned that a statement like that is being made about the NEA when everything we members of NEA endorse is because a majority of teachers attending the Assembly voted for it. Your statement reflects a widely held view that “the union” is a group of people who decide everything for teachers. You were at the Assembly and saw that our fellow teachers who make up the union are the real problem. When we buy into someone else’s rhetoric, we are our own worst enemies. When we don’t inform ourselves before opening our mouths, we are our own worst enemies. When we don’t have conversations with people who have already experienced educational traumas like this, like the California delegation, we are our own worst enemies. When we allow people like Tony Bennett to be elected in Indiana for the FIRST time – we are our own worst enemies. It is exciting to read on this blog that teachers in other states are finally standing up and shouting out with one voice about the things that are wrong.
Let me repeat, I understand and agree with your opposition to Common Core, but I seriously doubt that any of the teachers at the RA received money from big business to endorse the Common Core. I really don’t mean to sidestep the essence of what you wrote. It is excellent – I am just bothered when “the union” gets blamed for things that classroom teachers are actually responsible for. So keep spreading the word about Common Core – but put the blame for some of it where it really belongs. Thanks for being vocal!

But….. nationwide, and in different sects, unions are not allowed to peaceful protest. Unions are being disbanded because they represent REAL people. The voices of unions are dieing–probably because big business and corps. are taking over.

Well said, Angie Sullivan! I live in OK. I am a former teacher and now have twin granddaughters who are in 2nd grade. I firmly stand behind you in all you said in your letter. My granddaughters are both straight A students (were also when they were in 1st grade), and they are frustrated to the point of crying and having tummy aches from all that is expected of them. Implementing Common Core and what it requires of our students is absurd. And the people who have implemented it have no business trying to tell teachers and students how and what they must learn. We need educators as well as psychologists who have experience in this area to decide what, how, and when our students should be expected to be able to achieve the goals set before them.

I have heard this about so many parents of very young children.
This breaks my heart.
There was a video somewhere on Diane’s blog the other day and she explained why this age inappropriate material was not the correct thing to do for these children.

I have said it before and finally I am hearing from other teachers, we do NOT SUPPORT the new standards and the new tests. The teachers need to start a NEW organization that is really representing the teachers who pay dues and not the interests of the Union’s Leaders! We need to STOP allowing the self-serving uniformed or if informed, then the lyers who continue to say things like We now have FEWER math standards! Really! I have been teaching for 40+ years and I have compared the high school standards and we are paying Billions of dollars to move a handful of standards down a level at each grade level. For example, some of the Pre-Calculus concepts have been moved down to Algebra 2. I assume most of the Billions are being spent on the new testing system. Tell everyone with children to OPT OUT NOW. Stop wasting precious resources on testing! If you must evaluate schools and teachers, then use the most reliable measure, ZIP CODES! See how much money we can now use for the classroom after we change our measuring and accountability system.

No one asked me here in Iowa either. This week this piece ran in our paper in support of CC signed by each of our elementary principals, our instructional coaches, and our curriculum director. There is so much wrong with it I don’t even know where to begin.

Well, I got not quite half way through to come upon this gem (amongst the many other gems of edudeformer mindless meanderings, puke, puke puke):
“We finally have common assessments teachers can use to measure student learning. Even more important will be the opportunity to analyze data from student learning and make adjustments in our teaching.”
And these folks are administrators??? Curriculum coordinators???
Who held the shotgun to their heads??? If no one then I feel sorry for the teachers in that district. See ya on my way if not hit the highway.

Speaking of my union–WEA, I sent the following question to the local office early last week. Is there anything in IDEA or the WACs about special education teachers being required to write IEP goals to grade level standards or Common Core State Standards. No response….
I was surprised to see one of the kindergarten teachers in the building after school this week, because I knew she had a substitute. She had the look of someone who has a splitting headache. She had been to a common core training, and it was just too much being piled on, especially with the expectation that existing curriculum materials have to somehow be modified or increased in rigor to meet CCSS. She said the saddest thing, “They don’t even give us time to enjoy the kids, or to let us teachers enjoy our careers.”
Every teacher in my district is being required to spend 2 whole school days in common core professional development. Just imagine the cost of covering for the substitutes, as well as, the extra time it takes teachers to write sub plans.

Among GE’s recipients were Mitt Romney, the Republican Governors Association, Democratic Governors Association, President Obama, and State Senator Bob Huff. Walmart’s Walton Family Foundation is another direct proponent of Common Core, funding among other education entities Education Reform Now, Inc. Also a donor to Huff. Walmart too. The Walton family, of Walmart, and other elite figures have the ability to directly influence the education system, as well as profit from Common Core materials sold in their stores. The fact that this is Bill Gates’ baby says it all. This is all about destroying public education and turning all students but the children of the elites to online “schools” “monitored” by teacher aides. Teachers and parents had better push back major, including putting pressure on politicians from both parties to reverse this insanity, or public education will be gone for good.

No one asked me. I teach in Washington. As for NEA “polling” its members: they polled 1200 members between July 13-24, 2013. On July 4, 2013 their total membership was 2,983,787 according to a google search. According to NEA 1200 equates to 75% of the membership supporting Common Core. But 32000 members of the BadAss Teachers Association, a BadAss Teacher Association in every state – all adamantly opposed to common core – those people can just be ignored. I am okay with admitting that math has never been my strong suite. But no matter how I try to twist it, my conclusions from that data are vastly different.

Common Core is intended to dumb down education and raise test results in order to improve minority scores which are consistently low. Obama wants everyone in the race to receive a “ribbon” to make them feel better about themselves.
