In a rare setback for Teach for America, Governor Mark Dayton vetoed an appropriation to fund more TFA recruits in the state. Minnesota has a small number of TFA corps members, but the governor questioned why the state should underwrite the wealthy organization to supply ill-trained teachers who don’t plan to stay on the job.

“the gov questioned why the state should underwrite the wealthy org to supply ill-trained tchrs who don’t plan to stay on the job”!!!!says it all, a no-brainer.

North Carolina Governor McCrory needs to ask the same question.

Yes he does. And then he needs to come to the logical conclusion.

We were very pleased he did this… they tried to sneak this into the bill at the last minute. It was a very appropriate use of the line item veto. The governor also signed into law the first significant increase in Higher Ed funding in a very long time.

Dear Governor Cuomo,
Are you reading this and are you asking the same question. It is time for trained educators with very long-term goals of staying in the classroom to be hired and funded. Being a teacher was not meant to be a part-time job nor a temporary position.

Given the job market I don’t see a need to hire temps when full time teachers need jobs. We could probably get excellent teachers from Philadelphia or some other budget busted town.

I doubt you would have to go far since experienced teachers have been let go all over the country.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mark Dayton last fall when he was campaigning up in International Falls, MN. He seems like a genuinely nice man with his mind and heart in the right place. Not a typical “politican”. Rick Nolan was there, too, and he seemed to have the right perspectives. Now that Boise has decided to pull back its presence in International Falls, laying off 265 locals and 35 others, the economy has been hit very hard. I hope they can pull together to keep that community alive. People there are very nice and hard working. of course, the Border Patrol is alive and well up there. We had to move back to Ohio with a different job.

I’m glad he vetoed the bill, but where else does he stand precisely on public education and funding it?

Pretty good actually . . Hey signed the following . . .$78 more per student this year, $80 more per student next year, 134 Million for all day K beginning in 2014, 40 Million more for SPED, Increased flexibility in using local measures instead of VAM scores – there is some of the usual reformy stuff..but in general we did pretty well.
