Maureen Reedy, a veteran Ohio teacher and state teacher of the year, sent this gift, which I gladly share:
Song of Democracy ~ by Walt Whitman
An old man’s thoughts of school,
An old man’s gathering youthful memories and
blooms that youth itself cannot.
Now only do I know You,
O fair auroral skies – O morning dew upon the grass!
And these I see, these sparkling eyes,
These stores of mystic meaning, these young lives,
Building, equipping like a fleet of ships, immortal ships,
Soon to sail out over the measureless seas,
On the soul’s voyage.
Only a lot of boys and girls?
Only the tiresome spelling, writing, ciphering classes?
Only a public school?
Ah more, infinitely more.
And you America,
Cast you the real reckoning for your present?
The lights and shadows of your future, good or evil?
To girlhood, boyhood look, the teacher and the school.
Sail, Sail thy best, ship of Democracy,
Of value is thy freight, ’tis not the present only,
The Past is also stored in thee.
Thou holdest not the venture of thyself alone,
not of thy Western continent alone.
Earth’s resume entire floats on thy keel, O ship,
is steadied by thy spars,
With thee Time voyages in trust, the antecedent
nations sink or swim with thee.
With all their ancient struggles, martyrs, heroes,
epics, wars, thou bear’st the other continents,
Theirs, theirs as much as thine, the destination –
port triumphant;
Steer then with good strong hand and wary eye
O helmsman, thou carriest great companions,
Venerable priestly Asia sails this day with thee,
And royal feudal Europe sails with thee.
And royal feudal Europe sails with thee.

“Steer then with good strong hand and wary eye
O helmsman, thou carriest great companions,”
Thanks for reminding us that providing our students with a quality public education and working to protect it is an awesome responsibility in a democratic society. Our future depends on it.

“Steadied by thy spars”
In sailing vessels, spars of all types are used to resist compressive and bending forces.
I like that line the best. It provides hope.

I’m really loving another Sunday of enrichment on your blog, Diane! Thanks so much!
This is a very important reminder that the assurance of continued democracy in this nation is dependent upon public education, in an era when the assurance of continued public education is dependent upon democracy.
We must rage against attempts to remove democracy from education and government, such as through mayoral and state control of local school districts and patronage appointments of superintendents and school board members..
Do not give up your right to vote and, hence, to have a say and be represented in education and your government, Americans!

Thanks for the nourishment Diane,
This is really a gift, from Walt Whitman, to all of you who are saying good bye to your students; sending them on their way with a piece of your heart and a measure of your devotion, intellect, protection and passion for their future, their health, safety and happiness.
It is a gift for our Democracy and fuel for staying the course through these trying times.

“And royal feudal Europe sails with thee.
And royal feudal Europe sails with thee”
These lines strike me in particular, because they are underscored by the repetition, and such emphasis on that reminds me that America is not alone in dealing with corporate education “reforms.” MIchelle Rhee and Wendy Kopp have been aiding in the export of the neo-liberal agenda abroad, including privatization and the use of minimally trained teachers via TeachForAll, in 26 foreign countries, such as the UK. Thus, teachers in England and other nations have been dealing with the same kinds of issues that we’ve been facing here: http://www.atl.org.uk/publications-and-resources/report/2013/2013-april-mary-bousted-speech.asp
Therefore, these lines remind me that, if we want to preserve democracy and public education, American educators really ought to be collaborating and standing shoulder to shoulder with other educators internationally against the encroachment of privatization.
Shock doctrine and attacks on the profession have been emerging abroad as well. Thus, I think one important step would be to raise public awareness internationally of the fact that the achievement gap exists between low and higher income students in all nations: http://www.epi.org/blog/international-tests-achievement-gaps-gains-american-students/
