My, how things change in only one year.
Last year, Governor Jindal rushed through his legislation to strip teachers of tenure, base 40% of their evaluation on test scores, make all teachers at-will employees, subject to dismissal with one bad rating, and everything else that Jindal and White could dream up to make it hard on teachers.
When challenged in court, the law was declared unconstitutional because it covered too many subjects.
So the governor returned to the Legislature seeking to revive his punitive evaluation system. The Legislature voted unanimously to delay its punitive effects, despite the protestations of Jindal and White. They wanted to start the firings ASAP. The legislators said wait.
Maybe they started wondering who would want to teach in the state’s schools.
Or they noticed Jindal’s sagging poll numbers.

Could if be that the tide is turning in favor of REASON? I pray the answer is a resounding “YES!”

When the hell is Jindal’s time as Governor in Louisiana? Thank God he doesn’t have a future in National Politics. http://liberaleb.wordpress.com/2013/05/06/ken-cuccinelli-virginias-worst-nightmare/

My new hero- Representative Gene Reynolds, Louisiana EDUCATOR, who introduced the bill that delays Compass repercussions. I had the pleasure of meeting him before he ran for office, when he was still an educator. One of the good guys!

I couldn’t be happier that this reign of deform is coming to an end. But it’s too late for my school. We will say goodbye to our students and to each other in twelve short days, because our district felt the wrath of Bobby and John and ran scared. They decided to close us, ship 300 + kids to other schools, and put us all on the unemployment list. All in the hopes of making scores go up. Gaming the system at the expense of kids.

I’m so sorry Jill. I was “almost” in that boat with my school; however, they’ve been able to fight the closure… I, on the other hand, have had enough… I’m going to go teach in a parochial school based on my faith… if I have to push kids as hard as I have to push them, I might as well be able to pray with them.

Apparently, in spite of whatever dreamscape was painted, the outcome of destroying education is not a popular policy.

Will sanity eventually prevail? Here in CT we are getting TV commercials telling us to urge our legislators to “not give up on children” in response to a Connecticut Education Association ad that says teachers need to be included in any discussion on educational reform. Because, you see, teachers would do anything possible to derail a child’s education.

I have to giggle, Diane, at the typo in the post–more Freudian, though.
He is, indeed, “GovernoT” Jindal!

Puyish is a moron. Every 2 days he makes headlines for the wrong reasons. All for national headlines in hope for political aspirations? He has shot himself in both feet at this point. This sneaky snake (charmer) need to give it up. It is embarrassing to lay claim as being a resident of the great state of Louisiana when we have a yahoo like this as our governor.

The VAM model for teachers of Math borders on STUPIDITY! Would you expect a student’s score to increase on his FINAL EXAM from Civics to American History? I would hope NOT. They are not the same subject. However, the VAM model REQUIRES growth to be shown from the student’s End of Course ALGEBRA I test to the student’s End of Course Geometry test. First of all, they are obviously NOT the same subject. Second, if the child already scored “Excellent” or “Good” on their Algebra I test, there is no higher score NOR is there anything bad about scoring the exact same thing the next year! All that it means is that his Algebra I and Geometry teachers did their job, but the geometry teacher would be rated ineffective if all her students scored the exact same thing as they scored last year in Algebra I! Some students are better at Geometry, others are worse. Like I said, BORDERLINE STUPIDITY may be too generous for this precious little model that they forced down our throats, hoping that we will fail so that private corporations can take over public education!
