The so-called parent trigger bill will likely come to a vote in the Florida Senate on Monday. It has already passed the House.
The bill would allow parents to turn their community school over to a charter operator. Florida has more than 500 charter schools, many run by for-profit chains that contribute to legislators’ campaign funds.
The big problem for the bill is that no Florida parent groups support it.
The Miami Herald reports that a video is circulating that pretends to represent Florida parents but is likely a fake created by an out-of-state group. Similarly, a fake petition is also making the rounds. The question raised in the article is whether the phony endorsements come from the Walton-funded Parent Revolution of Florida or from Jeb Bush and Michelle Rhee.
Hopefully, an investigative reporter will get to the bottom of this deception.
Meanwhile, let’s keep fingers crossed that the Florida Senate listens to the parents of Florida.

The Florida Bill as does the California Bill does not exclude parents, students, teachers and community from Pulling The Trigger. The Florida Bill if anyone has actually read the entire 15 pages should go down for other reasons such as the hostility to teachers included in the bill. Does anyone else read these things?

George,
Here are the other troubling clauses in Florida’s parent trigger bill. This post contains the links to the article. The PAA post and the NPE post for some reason omitted the links to the facts behind the article.
Also, FL today has 602 charter schools with hundreds in queue.
We now have more charters than Texas. We rank second in the nation.
When you consider TX has 4.8 M students as compared to FL’s 2.4M students to educate, you must conclude that FL has gone over board with charters.
The bills in house now will only further proliferate expansion of charters with little to no accountability.
Florida’s charter schools now close at a rate of 47%. Nearly one in every two charters close. How responsible is this? They are not even protecting the interests of the existing charters by recklessly adding more.
Florida was founded by native American Indians. The name obviously means: Place Where Anything Goes!

The Parent Trigger Article containing the other clauses that no legislator is discussing… We try to testify on them. All they care about is the trigger aspect of this bill.
