Last year, Florida State Senators failed to pass a parent trigger bill because not a single parent group in the state supported the bill. Parents came from across the state to testify against the legislation. They accurately saw the bill as a transparent effort to trick parents into handing their public school over to a charter corporation.
The bill comes up for a vote in the next few days. Jeb Bush and his surrogates are working hard to get the bill through this time. Senators have offered a flurry of amendments to try to remove some offensive features.
But Florida parents remain united in opposition to this blatant effort to enrich charter corporations.
Every Florida legislator should read the exposé of the parent trigger that was reported here by Yasha Levine..
I am a devoted follower of this blog, but there are too many errors like the one in this headline, or others that are obviously typos. There is a danger that opponents who must obviously read it would use the careless editing as a way to ridicule the ideas. Find a proofreader!
_____
Richard Ognibene, the headline does not have a typo. I refer to the “parent trigger” as a “parent tricker” bill. It is designed to trick parents. Got it?
I thought it was on purpose, or perhaps a Freudian slip. Love it!
Actually it is the Teacher Tricker Bill. The big problem are the sections on taking away the rights of teachers. Parents, students, teachers and community can “Pull the Trigger” on their obstructionist school district. You do not need a corporation, foundation or wealthy individual to “Pull the Trigger” if you read the 15 page bill. It actually make charter schools more transparent. But read the Teacher Tricker parts. So overall stop the bill. Before you comment on anything you must read every word. Educators should know that.
The devil is always in the details and contracts and bill language is word by word and having your legal dictionary ready. I have two of them. There is nothing wrong with parents having another tool in their box. Concerning the 24th Street “Parent Trigger” in LAUSD I have obtained the original MOU and guess what it says? Parents we love you and in the next sentence it says “And no parents will be on the board running the school.” So what I am saying If you do not read the original language and addendum you know nothing. The addendum leaves out that language. Now to the legal situation. There is no replacement for the original MOU under which they are operating. The new situation you see is just an addendum and is an addition to the original MOU. Therefore, no parent will be involved in the decision making process. Cute, isn’t it. Now, do they really love the parents and is this really Parent Empowerment as the State Law is called. By the way the CDE also told me that they did not on the search engine use the phrase Parent Trigger even though that is how everyone refers to it nationwide. More Orwell. Read the language before you comment,
By the way Diane I love your phrase as it is such good wordsmithing.
