Indiana voters booted out State superintendent Tony Bennett because of a strange coalition: Democrats who disliked his all-out assault on teachers and public education, allied with Republicans who disliked his fierce advocacy for the Common Core.
Now the struggle against the Common Core continues in that state, as advocates like the rightwing Stand for Children run an advertising campaign to support the actionable standards, while locals continue to oppose them.

Who’s pushing for the common core? Evil, greedy, worms.
Who’s pushing against the common core? Upstanding defenders of truth, justice, and the American way.

The local opposition to Common Core presented a letter today to Governor Mike Pence calling on him to take action against the Common Core. It was signed by 54 local organizations, mostly conservative but also by moderate teacher groups. We decided five days ago to allow individuals to sign the letter, it has 864 signatures already and they keep pouring in. See the letter here http://hoosiersagainstcommoncore.com/action-item-sign-the-letter-to-governor-pence/

A friend, who knows my leanings are democratic and that I try to stay current on the goings on for politics and education, wanted to talk to me about the common core. Her husband (who loves fox news and is a biology teacher at a public high school) listens to Glenn Beck’s radio shows and follows him on the internet. She said his website is The Blaze. Glenn Beck is strongly opposed to the common core and the education reform agenda. He is for local control and supports our public schools. I googled it, and it appears to be true. He is speaking out to his followers about these subjects. I would have never guessed that someone so far to the right would be on the same side of the fence. I just wanted to share that we have an unlikely friend in Glenn Beck. How many others are out there speaking up for our locally controled public schools? Shouldn’t we band together?

Education “Reform” is not a Republican vs. Democrat thing. Both sides have supporters and opponents in both parties. Glenn Beck’s stance doesn’t surprise me. I get the feeling that if the “reform” movement is ever rolled back, it will be in no small part due to the Right Wing and Libertarian love for local control. Romney even expressed some misgivings about the reach of federal control in current education policy, and let’s not forget that the most powerful proponent of the “reform” movement is a Democrat President of the United States. That’s why I really couldn’t understand teachers who said they were voting for Obama because they felt privatization would progress faster under Romney.
We need to stop thinking of this in terms of political parties; Rather we need to start examining politicians and other people in terms of their actual words and actions when it comes to education. We need to stop giving knee-jerk support to Democrats just because they are Democrats, and start thinking in terms of who our friends and enemies actually are.

Michelle Malkin is a HUGE critic of CCSS. Her megaphone is gigantic. We need to lay aside differences in order to come together during this moment of national crisis in public education. The longer we turn our noses up at one another, the longer the madness will continue. And it is sheer madness.

My friend and I initiated the Indiana opposition to Common Core, and have spent the last year travelling the state. We have tried to amass a bi-partisan coalition, and the bill we are working to advance has both Republican and Democrat sponsors in each House. The initial push back was driven from those on the right, primarily Tea Parties. Our sense of it is that there is this wonderful opportunity for the left and the right to join forces and triumph. If they refuse to work with one another, neither camp will likely succeed. In Indiana, activist in the right are on the front line fighting Common Core. If teachers will join them in mass, as well as organizations who consider themselves to be on the left, we can topple the machine. We can score a victory against those who prefer “Big Business in bed with Big Government” to run our schools. Visit http://www.hoosiersagainstcommoncore.com to follow our crusade.
