On other posts, I have told the story of Eastside Memorial High School in Austin, Texas.
The school board and superintendent (Broad-trained) decided to give the school to a charter chain called IDEA. This was not popular with the community. Many families in the neighborhood pulled their children out of the IDEA charter in protest and sent them elsewhere. In the November election, the community elected a school board member opposed to the charter takeover, and the board severed the contract. Now the state is considering shutting down the school, and the parents and students are trying to block the school’s closure. At the Save Our School Rally last weekend in Austin, a large contingent of parents and students from Eastside Memorial High School marched and chanted in unison, raising their “bear paws” to show their support for their school.
Here is a letter from a parent:
Dear Diane, Thank you so much for sharing our story! ~~
There are many misconceptions about our school. Some created by self-serving “we can do better” groups. MOST created and broadcast by our own School District! I wish to address Five. ~~
First, “EMHS is always failing”. When EMHS was “born” in August 2008, it was already rated Academically Unacceptable (AU). That is NOT what they promised the neighborhood. It was supposed to be a fresh start. Our students and staff have lived and worked under this AU guillotine from day one.
~~
Second, “EMHS cannot fix itself.” EMHS is no longer AU. The hard-working students and staff turned the school around. Within two years, grades, test scores and graduation rates were WAY UP. And drop-out and discipline reports were way down. ~~ Their reward? Their beloved and successful Principal was replaced. And (10/20/2011) two months into the new school year the district Superintendent announced that IDEA Charter would take over their school in a year!!! ~~
Three, “The Community does not care.” Many emotionally exhausted, heart-broken students and staff left the school. Many more stayed and FOUGHT BACK. Eventually, thousands across Austin wrote, called, and protested FOR the school. As Diane said, it took an election and 14 months to cancel the IDEA plan. Now the Super is telling another story to scare us all. ~~
Four, “The TEA Commissioner will close EMHS”. But, why would he? EMHS is AA! And scores are way up. ~~ And, there is a lot going on right now in Texas education (testing, funding, etc.). He is busy. Why would he bother messing with our school??? Because the pissed off / embarrassed Super went charging over there to tell him that the new Board had messed up and EMHS was now out of compliance! ~~
Finally, Five: “Nothing at EMHS has worked./ We have tried everything.” Nearing 5 years of existence, EMHS has been subjected to 4 MAJOR restructurings by the District. IDEA is number 5. When I think of how wonderful our little campus family is and how well they are performing. I think about how glorious they might already have become. If not for the constant churning actions of their heartless (stupid?) District. ~~
Despite the District’s constant reminders to the world that EMHS is garbage. Our campus family is one of the most loving, compassionate, hard-working, and determined groups that I have ever had the honor of being a part of. ~~ Please pray for us. Thank you.
Signed: Toni Rayner, EMHS mom x2.

Prayers going up. The deformers just do not stop with their lies and garbage.
Good news in Louisiana. The teacher abuse law which would make it almost impossible to get tenure and threatens the tenure of veteran teachers was pronounced UNCONSTITUTIONAL yesterday based on there being too many issues in the bill (better than nothing) and a couple weeks ago the voucher law was shot down. Of course Jindal is wasting taxpayer money appealing, although he complains about the state not having enough money because the government is too big—a lie, of course. I think if one state gets a really good breakthrough the rest will start tumbling.

My cousin just went to the latest TED conference. Here is what I know: They did a big experiment in learning with students in India. Classroom vs. online at home. Of course, online at home won hands down. The kids actually preferred to work alone at the computer and not have to wake up and go to a physical school and have to interact with teachers. (imagine that) They can work at their own pace. (Take your time, Johnny!) No social promotion problems in your basement!
This speaker is going to be well financed by the technological elites (guess who..), and presto no more physical schools, no more teachers (a few online teachers of course) , but most of the grading is done by computer, and students will learn online in their own basements- how is that for a secure environment? We will not need physical schools anymore- think of the savings. No buildings and grounds personnel. Maybe one teacher per 100 online learners (receivers). No more counselors- what did they do anyway? No layers of administration. One CEO supervising millions of receivers (you know them as learners). The problem of education is solved. So here we are debating these things, but don’t worry, the technological elites have already figured things out. Haven’t you seen those ads for online teachers. I know I have. I can’t wait to work as an independent contractor for $10.00 and hour and no benefits. 500 kid workload- no problem. I have a feeling most of them will get straight As. Call me a prophet. Most of us are probably teaching our classes face-to-face, like standing in front of them talking. That is so yesterday. Can’t you see the looks of apathy and disinterest on the faces of your students? YOU are just not that interesting- let’s face the truth! Tech is just way more stimulating. Get ready for the future! Let’s not be Luddites here. If there is a better way? You probably think I am joking. Just wait for the TED information to come out…..

I saw that garbage of HuffPost. Don’t you want your little Kindergartner to get up in the morning and sit at a computer for hours? It would work so well and can you imagine sharing time? Wonderful-presto-magical-such a great education. I wondered how much the guy got paid to spread the bs.

One more thing. Congratulations to Eastside. You’ve stood up to the flim-flam atrists who were going to rip-off your children and community. Now, keep fighting and don’t dare let them take away the school that belongs in your community under your control.

John Miller, you are right. The tech industry longs to create a model that eliminates human teachers. Globalization means the one with the lowest cost wins. Yikes. Not for me or mine.

Well, that’s okay because once we’re all 1099 contract workers making minimum wage with no benefits, we won’t be able to afford computers, much less internet connections, so then we can just dispense with this education malarkey altogether. Pink Floyd was just ahead of its time. We don’t need no education….

If you are not aware of this technology development, then you need to keep informed. If implement on a national scale, we as a society are in a world of hurt. Our children will be labeled and marginalized from as early as when you fill out your first enrollment form for your child’s kindergarten.
