Michelle Rhee will be speaking at New York City’s Cornell Club, to promote her new book “Radical”, on Tuesday Feb. 5, 2013 at 6 PM. (6 East 44th St (between 5th and Madison, map here.) ,
New Yorkers for Great Public Schools, Class Size Matters and other pro-public education parents and advocates will be there to protest Rhee’s destructive policies and proposals, including her push to eliminate ANY caps on class size. More on how Rhee wants to undermine and privatize our public schools, see the parent Rhee-port card here.
For more information about the rally by pro-education advocates, email info@classsizematters.org .
Calling herself a radical is probably one of the few honest things Michelle Rhee has ever said.
After all, privatizing the schools, monetizing kids, destroying collective bargaining for teachers, and turning the job into temporary, at-will employment are all radical acts.
Extremely destructive, but radical, acts.
Yeah, but she meant it be ironic.
The corporate right uses the vernacular of the progressive left to launch deceptions — this is an artform most recently cultivated by Frank Luntz, and it is just as orwellian as ‘double plus good’… Michelle Rhee is no exception — obviously an Ayn Randian fascist to her core…
Hey, I use Frank Luntz to explain things as well — here’s a clip of his:
“Taxation. Litigation. Innovation. Education. Remember those four words for they are at the core of your message, your policy and your response to critics of corporate America. Here is the policy answer to the outsourcing challenge that offers a solution without selling out conservative free-market principles. The four words should be strung together, repeated often, with an adverb attached: too much taxation, too much litigation, not enough innovation and not enough education. That should be your mantra. Remember it. Fortunately, the words rhyme, which means your audience will remember it as well. ”
Occasionally using ALL CAPS, Frank Luntz, a political pollster, consultant, strategist and, especially, language specialist, has long told Republicans to “[d]efine fairness as ‘equality of opportunity’ . . . [to] speak of American ownership [being] sure to frame it with the lens of opportunity. Ownership is limited, but THE OPPORTUNITY OF OWNERSHIP is limitless and the very definition of the American Dream. . . . Start and end with ACCOUNTABILITY. It matters most.”1 The Obama/Duncan program seems to follow this model,
Actually, her self-labeling is a misuse of the term: http://atthechalkface.com/2013/02/01/because-it-is-my-name/
The important thing to remember is this: Do not buy this book.
The only thing Rhee puts first is Rhee as she probably manages to put herself on the cover. Let’s hope it has $1.99 sticker covering her face in the marked down bin ASAP. Even then why buy a book full of lies and sociopathic rants?
Yesterday’s New York Times Magazine had an interview with her.
Yes, and read the comments:
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/03/magazine/michelle-rhee-gets-an-education.html?comments&_r=0
Her schtick is fading. Many are on to her lies and spin.
Linda: the comments alone are worth the read although one was a bit cruel…
Linda-Ct [a Linda who posts on this website?] notes: “She will be known as the Bernie Madoff and Lance Armstrong of education.”
As if those two acknowledged masters of self-deception and self-serving excuses have not suffered enough from the damage they have inflicted on themselves and others. Have they really sunk oh so low that now they are being lumped in with the likes of Michelle Rhee?!?!
“The beatings will continue until morale improves.”
Jon Stewart lets us down….

Her book will be filled with lies, distortion, and inaccuracies. If she wants to do something “radical”, then she should leave education and reforms for the expert. She should open-up a sundry store where she can sell tapes of all sizes and color.
When her book is given for free, which will be very soon, I’ll download it, print it and burn it. Rhee’s credibility is fading. She cannot Rheemake herself, not even with her book.
Yes, I was a little disappointed with the Jon Stewart interview. Well, actually, his questions were better and much more critical than other TV interviews I have seen of her, He clearly does not agree with her. On the other hand, when he interviewed Diane, he was clearly sympathetic with her.
But why give more publicity to psychopathic Rhee at all, with her canned one-liners, pushing her book? Unless he was going to completely skewer her, as I only recall him doing once, with that Cramer financial guy from CNBC. (Not easy for a man to skewer a cute smiling young lady like Rhee. Although any teacher would.))
I certainly would not call it a “puff piece” though, as are so many of her TV interviews.
Jon Stewart is having Rhee on tonight. Please post. I will lose all faith in humanity if this is another puff piece:

Watching now….waiting to see.

Good. I wish there were thousands of protesters. She seems like she’s trying to soften her nasty image. Barf.
What i keep seeing is the end of education debate. Pundits who know less about education than our legislators keep asking these people softball questions in a non threatening 1 sided conversation with no fact checking. There is no representing both sides. No dissenting opinion, only propaganda which is taken as fact by the interviewer. I watched John Stewart do it last night with Michelle Rhee, I watched him do it with Arnie Duncan. John Stewart is not qualified to ask these people questions based on the fact that his mom is or was a teacher. We need education DEBATE, but it just isn’t happening. I am tired of getting angry while watching TV and having no recourse but blogging about it. I am preaching to the choir.
Job satisfaction. A place I once visited, but didn’t stay.
If you have digested your dinner, you might want to try and stomach this.
Maybe counting her lies will help pass the time. She appreciates us SO much..puhlease!

Her publisher cancelled yesterday’s scheduled reading at barnes and noble.
Due to the possibility of protests? Who could stand her voice?
Hmm— Getting the urge to duct tape the book’s cover.
Or the .99 cent sticker on her puss.
Your comment made me giggle. Thanks!
I could have added a sometime vowel to puss and it wouid have been even funnier.
Goodnight! 🙂
Purrrrr-fect. Sweet dreams!
Jon Stewart does not usually try to skewer people, but he does normally try to pin them down.
That usually is the case and it usually works fairly well, but for Rhee he seemed unprepared a bit lazy, not challenging her assertions.
It was nice that he kept talking about he harm testing was doing, but he did not go beyond that.
Frankly, I think his attention was elsewhere — on the Super Bowl. Not because he is a football fan — he is, but as part of his jog.
It is so much of a window on what i going on and there is so much to riff on. There are the commercials, the half-time show, the call to not glorify violence followed by the commercial glorifying violence, the announcers.
Most Sunday nights he probably does prepare for the interview, but I get the feeling he called in his writing team to watch the game together.
His job is to be funny, not to make the case against Michelle Rhee.
Speaking of which, see Valerie Strauss

MICHELLE RHEE, SCORCHED EARTH & THE Bunch’o’Lies PROGRAM (PART 1)
In a couple of years time Michelle Rhee will be up there with Sarah Palin
on the lists of people we used to think were important.
No time like the present to both give her credit & call her out on her lies.
I will give Ms. Rhee credit for one thing –
as a DC parent principals and teachers told me repeatedly
that the central office was more efficient in responding to school requests
for repairs, etc. once she was Chancellor. Good.
But the rest of her programs were based on a bunch of lies —
in fact, you could call it the bunch’o’lies program.
The lies started with the Resume she submitted for the job,
continued on to her explanations as to why she fired teachers
(see her Jan 2010 letter to the DC City Council, where she admits this)
and roll on with her well-polished routines on Oprah
& now Jon Stewart.
They culminate in these lies:
1–That her reforms actually did something to close the achievement gap in DC
2–That there was no cheating on standardized tests during her chancellorship
2a–If there was, she had no suspicions
3—That when she fired people for budgetary reasons (Reduction in Force firings),
she really didn’t think she had the money
(When she was later shocked to find she had the money, she did not rehire the teachers)
4 –She fired those 266 teachers without due-process (or good math)
because they were hitting children or having sex with kids or had been absent 78 times.
I’m sorry, #4 was true — for 9 out of the 266.
Of those 9, exactly one was accused of sexual misconduct,
6 had served suspensions for corporal punishment
2 allegedly had poor attendance records.
The other 257? They just got in Rhee’s way.
And if lives were ruined, you don’t worry.
After all, how are you going to open all those Charter Schools
if you don’t get rid of the DCPS teachers?
If you want to clear the ground, start the fire, see it burn,
scorch the earth and live with the consequences
for others.

I can understand the sentiment about needing to fix so much about education, that we think the only way to do it is to blow it up and start from scratch. I just can’t abide that sentiment. I don’t believe that destruction must happen for a farmer to plant seeds in a receptive soil that will create an abundant harvest. We may need to till some better nutrients into the ground, and plow some fields (or outdated methods) under, but we can do it without dynamite. I think that the strategy of rude is not the foundation for recreating an educational system that will have the elements we want, among which would be civility, mutual respect, passionate debate, and negotiated agreements.
