I agree. The federal government is good at screwing up our education system.
Is your name Rick Perry? Only kidding. Did he get one thing right?
Herein lies the problem – corporate education reform has a bi-partisan appeal. So do the solutions.
Funny how much this sounds like Ronald Reagan who wanted to eliminate US Dept of Ed. Personally, I’m glad we have a US Dept of Ed that has promoted Title IX (equal access to various facilities for young women, expanded opportunities for students with disabilities, gathered and shared information about what’s working around the country and so on. The US Dept of Ed isn’t perfect, but I’m glad it’s there to help.
Those of you who like Reagan, want to eliminate USDE of course have every right to say so. But I think the federal govn’t does have a role in public education.
The federal government has the right to exist and the right to act through the powers granted by the United States Constitution. Any power not granted by the US Constitution to the federal government belongs to the state.
Scour the US Constitution. Try to find the word education or school. You won’t. Our forefathers believed in an educated citizenry, but they purposely left education out of federal jurisdiction for good reason.
Like so many powers that are rightly the province of the state, the federal government has usurped control over education. Our sin is that we have allowed it.
…I would give the job immediately to Dr. Diane Ravitch.
I promise to do the same if I were U.S. Secretary of Education. Dr. Ravitch would bring intellectual rigor, a tolerance for ambiguity, and openness of mind to the position.
