Terrific interview. You spoke eloquently on behalf of teachers and public education. I too wish that more people could have heard you explain what is happening across the nation. Wisconsin teachers thank you for explaining our cause. It is about children and resources for those children. It is about poverty and our poor responses to it. It is not primarily about teacher pay as is so widely reported. Thank you so much.
Privatization – capturing public money for businesses and corporations – isn’t that fascism? Isn’t this what FDR warned us about, turning over public functions to a small group of oligarchs?
The strike in Chicago reminded me of an episode of This American Life from 2004, 10 years after “school reform” began in Chicago. It tells the story of one amazing public school who did a lot with very little. When “reform” began, the school culture deteriorated. This is a very moving account, and worth an hour to listen.
I have been writing This American Life to do a follow up to this story, or perhaps a series of episodes on school reform. I encourage the readers to do the same.
Thank you for such an excellent analysis of the state of education in this country. You speak the words that teachers are desperate to have understood.
This link is broken (the address includes the address for this post). Should be bit.ly/2Q2h39
A great interview by Chris Hedges here, too: http://www.democracynow.org/2012/9/11/chris_hedges_dems_owe_chicago_public
Do you know of any educator from Chicago who could run the district in a fair manner?

Great responses, Diane. Too bad a larger audience doesn’t hear this…We should all do what we can to publicize this…
I want to be here when the wall collapses!
(my favorite part of the interview. well said.)
May I survive the assault on public education here in Bridgeport, CT so that I may be here when it does.
