This article was published last year. It was written by Marc Epstein, a social studies teacher and dean at Jamaica High School. Marc has a Ph.D. in Japanese naval history. Since he wrote this article, the New York City Department of Education closed Jamaica High School but a court stayed the closing. The city has already placed small schools in the historic building.

From the article:
“Referring to the civil service education laws the Times editorial states “This law has for fourteen years been the great safeguard of the State’s schools. Until it was passed it was common for young men and women, without experience or training to be appointed teachers in the city’s schools.” (The New York Times, Sept 24, 1911)
If this strikes you as an indictment of mayoral control over the schools, that’s precisely what it is.
Contrast this with our current mayor’s campaign in conjunction with today’s New York Post. In it’s current incarnation the Post along with the Daily News and Wall Street Journal are calling for a return to the spoils system.”
The middle sentence says it all. “Those who don’t know history are destined to repeat it” E. Burke.
We’ve come such a long way in 100 years, eh?
“. . . it was common for young men and women, without experience or training to be appointed teachers” That wouldn’t be happening now would it? TFA anyone with your coffee?
I don’t call the regressive right regressive for nothing. They would love to take the clock back to before FDR’s time. It appears that the “conservative right” is now a relic of the past in today’s political landscape.
