The news just broke on Twitter and on Orthodox Jewish websites.
New York Commissioner MaryEllen Elia is resigning at the end of August. No reason given.
She was a champion of testing, Common Core, and sanctions for parents to dared to opt out of state testing.

Amen! This is a great day for public education in NY. She held listening sessions, where she did not listen to us, but we were expected to listen to her. Her views on testing and Common Core were hurting kids. Her game plan to follow what she pulled in Florida( change the name, but continue the same game) was a failure.
Congrats to the opt out movement!

Au revoir to a Jeb Bush disciple. Now New York can perhaps clean up the mess she made and make some genuine improvements.

So what are suggestions for people for whom we can lobby to replace her?

Maybe she will qualify as an education expert at the Center of American Progress. Her beliefs seem to be in line with theirs.

They probably don’t pay enough for her tastes.
She seems to go after the $250k+ jobs.

Maybe she could get a job as a manure sales spokeswoman like Michelle Rhee.

Maybe Larry Summers, CAP’s senior policy advisor and former Harvard president who has been linked to Jeffrey Epstein can find her a job.

She was kicked out of her district in Florida. Teachers there cheered, but Cuomo and Mulgrew pulled out the red carpet.

She was fired from her Hillsborough job because she wasted the district’s Reserve fund on Gates’ teacher evaluation plans, which flopped.

She’s taking another job, and it sounds federal.

“I hope to translate the experiences I’ve gained from one of the largest, most complex education systems in the country into lessons to help improve classrooms, schools, and districts for students in every state,” Elia wrote in her resignation letter.

I hope to translate my abject failures for students in Florida and NY to abject failure for students in every state and pick up a few million in the process.

I read it’s national education group. It may be one of the many “think tanks.” https://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/news/politics/albany/2019/07/15/why-maryellen-elia-new-york-education-commissioner-surprisingly-set-resign/1735831001/

I don’t know.
She says it will “focus on supporting districts to help turn around schools.”
Does that sound like a think tank?

I thought turn aground was Elias specialty

Elia says she is joining a national firm that specializes in turning around districts.
Did she turn around any districts in New York?

Turn aground is right.

I hope the Regents follow her out, because they’re just as useless as she was. All are indifferent to ELLs, among the most vulnerable students in the state.

This will be an unpopular opinion. I’m biased because I have a personal connection to the (lame duck) Commissioner’s family.
She did a better job than I expected picking up the pieces after King’s exit. For the duration of her tenure, APPR was decoupled from test scores.
I sense that Chancellor Rosa is preparing to make a big move with the Democrats to put Cuomo in his place. Nobody in the NYS Legislature, Democrat or Republican, wants to move forward with more test-based accountability. Nobody trusts Cuomo and very few fear him like back in 2012.
In fact, we may be seeing the beginning of the end of our Regents-for-all experiment.
I predict that the next Commissioner will be more progressive than Elia, because I trust Betty Rosa’s judgment far more than I trusted Tisch.

I understand your point of view, but I don’t think Elia was the person who decided to decouple APPR from test scores.
Her threats to punish opt out parents and students was not a shining moment in her tenure.

You could line her with Reynold’s Wrap, or coat her in glue and glitter, and she still would not shine. She was bad for teaching and learning.
The question now is who is replacing her . . . .
Jere Hochman?

Maybe at this point someone in charge should apologize to the children, parents, teachers and taxpayers of New York State for 8 years of chaos and waste and harm.
But I’m not holding my breath waiting for that.
I’m going to go water the garden.
Enjoy this beautiful, summer day all!

I’m guessing she’s going to join MGT Consulting Group. They boast that their education division includes former state Ed commishes:
“Our team is led by former state education commissioners, district superintendents, school board members, principals, and teachers.”
