No sooner did Mercedes Schneider post a blog about the disintegration of Jeb Bush’s “Chiefs for Change,” than the group decided it needed a makeover. After all, as Mercedes pointed out: As of March 10, 2015, it boasts only four members, down from 13 in October 2014. The remaining members are John White of Louisiana, Deborah Gist of Rhode Island, Hannah Skandera of New Mexico, and Mark Murphy of Delaware. And one of the four, Deborah Gist, is on her way to Tulsa to become superintendent. Which brings the “Chiefs” down to only three. The “Chiefs” have been a reliable echo chamber for Jeb Bush’s policies, favoring high-stakes testing, the Common Core, charter schools, evaluation of teachers by test scores, digital learning, and A-F school grades. The new leader of this tiny group of three Chiefs is John White, a big supporter of vouchers, for-profit charters, and the rest of Jeb Bush’s agenda.
But now that their number has diminished so dramatically, the group has decided to open its ranks to city superintendents (allowing Gist to remain a member). And now that Jeb Bush is a Presidential candidate, it will strike out on its own, no longer an adjunct to Bush’s “Foundation for Educational Excellence.” The group says it is looking for “bipartisan education leaders” and hopes to have a voice in the debate about the future of No Child Left Behind.
Wow. This is an all-star cast. Certainly should be a way to include people like Michelle Rhee, Andrew Cuomo, Arne Duncan, and Bill Gates to double membership.
Jeb is on a fool’s errand if he thinks he can win the hearts and minds of the American people. This family has way too much baggage, even more than Hillary and Bill.
Does it matter though? Every public school in the country is operating under his vision of “ed reform”.
That’s a powerful position for someone who hasn’t been elected in years and years. I don’t know why he bothers getting elected. DC all fell in lock-step behind him without any democratic grant of authority. Who needs elections?
The public would be more aware that Jeb’s reforms are huge failures if the media didn’t seem to have a gag order on them. That is why picketing these vipers will draw some public attention to the issues. We need to start portraying privatization as another form of corporate welfare, which in a way, it is. From what I have been reading, privatization is not saving any money, and the services are less efficient and effective. It also is not helpful to the economy because it puts middle class folks, that are more likely to spend much of the money they are paid, out of work while the wealthy squirrel it away.http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/post/study-privatizing-government-doesnt-actually-save-money/2011/09/15/gIQA2rpZUK_blog.html
Poor, poor Tulsa.
Chiefs for Change, Common Core, College and Career. Best and Brightest. Ed reform is 90% marketing.
It’s hard for me to picture some obscure assistant principal cutting thru this sophisticated national sales barrage and being heard. They really gotta join forces.
I reviewed the Board member bio’s for the Annenberg Institute for School Reform. No surprise, neither teaching nor, being a school superintendent, warrants inclusion. But, the Virtual Learning Academy has a representative.
The Nellie Mae Foundation is top heavy in people from the capital markets i.e. the sector that drags down GDP. The boards of the investment firms need school teachers.
By default, they have to know more about productivity than the failures currently in the financial sector.
Skandera will NEVER leave Chiefs for Change. Her buddy and mentor, Jeb Bush, will not let her leave. Skandera will do and say exactly what Bush wants said, when he wants it said, and to whom he wants it said. Skandera is one of Bush’s main puppets whose strings he can pull in any direction without objecting. Skandera is also a big player when it comes to pushing the PARCC business down the throats of the American people. Bush along with his friends at Pearson definitely do not want that business disrupted in any way. I would almost bet that Skandera becomes the Chair for the Chiefs for Change.
Who’s Jeb Bush?
