The Néw York Daily News has been jumping for joy at the prospect that the Common Core tests will show just how hopelessly dumb the students of NYC are.
Its latest editorial practically gloats about what is surely (the editors think) bad news. The writer also seems to believe that the harder the tests, the smarter the students will be (someday).
But wait a minute! This is the same editorial board that has cheered every twist and turn of Mayor Bloomberg’s high-stakes testing regime for 12 years! Don’t they realize that if the scores are low, Bloomberg is accountable? Every child in the public school system was educated on Bloomberg’s watch.
Isn’t it time to do what the mayor asked, and hold him accountable?
I wonder where the Daily News got hold of the questions. Last I heard, they were dragging teachers out of classrooms if they suspected them of sharing the questions with anyone.
The Daily News ed board deserves to be bought by the Koch Brothers — now THAT would be fitting….
I find it somewhat amusing that some people will say how “trustworthy” Daily News education reporters are in regards to writing the “truth” about public education. Don’t these same education writers have to adhere to the whims and opinions of their editors?
In fairness, the education reporters and editorial writers are not the same people. I sometimes wonder whether the editorial writers actually read their own education reporting.
I doubt very much if the education reporters at the Daily News really wanted to write a positive piece about public education, they wouldn’t be allowed to. Their editors answer to the editorial board.
Arthur Goldstein, thanks for pointing out the distinction between the editorial writers and the reporters.
The Daily News has outstanding education writers, as does the New York Post and the Wall Street Journal. Their editorials, however, are consistently anti-teacher, anti-union, and anti-public education.
The Daily News, owned by billionaire Zuckerman, supported billionaire Bloomberg’s manipulation of an illegal 3rd term, after NYC voters had twice voted in favor of term limits. The NYTIMES, owned by billionaire Sulzberger, and the NYPOST, owned by billionaire Murdoch, also supported Bloomberg’s seizure of a third term. Before launching his coup d’etat for another 4 years of control, Bloomberg visited all three newspaper billionaires to get them on board; then he won support from another billionaire, Ron Lauder, cosmetic magnate, who threatened to run against him. With key billionaires in NYC lined up, and with Speaker Christine Quinn supporting him too, Bloomberg spent a record $108mil on his campaign, winning narrowly despite the news media’s constant barrage of reports that Bloomberg was way ahead and unbeatable. It was much closer than anyone predicted, but news org’s like the Daily News helped mystify the situation. This is sometimes called “jawboning” where you make noises and threats and declarations so as to rhetorically scare off opposition and convince them “there is no alternative,” so why put up a fight?
Bloomberg should NOT be held accountable for education.
He should simply be arrested with lifetime/no parole.
Bloomberg and all the Daily News editorial staff should have to take the test and pass it in order to keep their jobs.
