Apparently it was Mayor Bloomberg who scuttled talks between the city and the unions. The unions wanted a sunset clause, the mayor demanded no sunset clause.
According to Ernest Logan of the supervisors’ union, most districts have a sunset clause:
““The CSA and the DOE were closing in on a final agreement on January 16, just before midnight. However, moments later, the Mayor intervened, demanding an agreement for an indefinite period of time,” Logan said.
“It is important to know that the overwhelming majority of school systems throughout the state have reached a one-year agreement in order to evaluate and modify it later to better serve our children. The state law provides for a one-year evaluation plan and the mayor supported the enactment of this legislation,” he added in a statement.”

“Let the market place determine the value of labor.”
Sociopathic words, no doubt.
Go read about the world before unions, my friend—and the world without unions today.
Go Google “Triangle Fire” or “Foxconn” and then come back and give us another Ayn Rand speech…

If you enjoy a 5 day work week = thank a union.
If you have the right to a harassment free workplace = thank a union.

I think you get the idea.

Bloomberg might be able to bully his way telling people how much soda they can drink and changing laws to appoint himself a third term, but he can’t bully workers into agreeing to something they know is wrong and is leading to the destruction of the best educational system in the world.
We all know that these millions would have not gone to the children; it never does. There are now a lot of lobbyists disappointed because they will not be getting their piece of the pie. Amen.

RL, you are right. The students would never have seen a nickel of that $450 million. It would have gone to consultants, data coaches, and a thousand of makeshift jobs.

Does Mayor Bloomberg stand to gain anything, if there’s no agreement? Why would he insist on a clause that is not common practice in success negotiations?

No one says no to the mayor. Or do they?

There would not be a middle class without unions. There would be no worker rights withoug unions and that is why worker rights are being taken away as unions have less representation. The corporatist privatizers want it all as in that famous Gordon Gecko line “Greed is Good.” Unions must also face the economic reality but not at the expense of giving all their losses into the pocketbooks of those at the top in their inflated salaries and bonus packages that are taxed at 15% as capital gains.
When you are talking about bus drivers who deal with special education children this is another thing again as they must have knowledge and training to deal with these potential circumstances. All employees have rights not just the top administrators. Those on the top are taking away all the sacrificed gains of the working class of people for the benefit of the top alone. Just look at the economic statistics over time on this and there it is. Not an accident.
Bus drivers, do not give up. Fight for your and your students rights and safety. This is how unions started in the first place. Go back to basics.

Without unions, we’d still be following those 1915 (and earlier!) rules such as teachers not being seen on the street after hours (then, teachers were mostly women), not allowed to be married, had to start the fire to heat the school room in the morning–oh, go ahead and Google them!

My ex’s grandmother was a teacher in New Jersey back in the early 30’s. When she got married, she had to not tell her superiors in order to keep her job. She would take her wedding band off her finger before going to work each day. The jig was up when she got pregnant with her first child, my mother-in-law.

This former teacher is absolutely correct. No one knows history anymore. If they did these attempts to take away teacher and employee rights would have no traction. This is why Reagan and Bennett took away much history and civics in the classroom. Now we are reaping this lack of knowledge with their ability to pull off a simple fast one on the public. Shame on us.
