A California watchdog agency fined Mayor Kevin Johnson of Sacramento $37,500 for failing to report donations of $3.5 million to two of his initiatives, one for education, the other for education.
Anyone can make a mistake, so we should be prepared to forgive his honest errors in not reporting these gifts on 25 occasions.
One of the recipients of his largesse is TFA, not surprising since his wife Michelle Rhee got her start in TFA.
Even more interesting is that the Walton family–that ultra-conservative family in Arkansas that opposes public education–gave him $500,000.
Funny, it seems like only yesterday that the Rhee-Johnson couple gave a lecture on ethics at the University of Hawaii.

Their hard work speaks for itself! When Big $$ gets more Big $$, it can slip ones’ mind. Just because teachers buy many of their own teaching materials, work hours of overtime, arrive early and stay late, grade papers on weekends, go to school at night and during summers, and get paid much less than many other professions…oh, but Michelle Rhee is in touch with all that. Let’s not throw cucumbers quite yet! Ok, throw it …Now!!!

Rhee and Johnson are one of the more ethically couples I know of.
Remember her famous miracle resume? A very large fraction of its claims were demonstrably false; in Baltimore at Harlem Park she and her principal were pioneers in making themselves look good by getting rid of low-achieving students.
She intervened to thwart an investigation into his at best weird interactions with young girls in a program he oversaw.
Much of the time she was being paid to be DC public schools chancellor, she was off running his camaign for mayor–or so I hear.

I can empathize. I know that whenever I get $3.5 million donations, I have a hard time remembering them.
