The decision to declare illegal the funding of the voucher program is very important. Vouchers were to be funded by taking money that was dedicated to public elementary and secondary schools. The decision was about the funding mechanism. If the politicians want a voucher program, they can’t take money out of the minimum foundation funding for public schools. Like, they could raise taxes to pay for kids to go to religious schools and learn about creationism.

Woweeeee! I’m a NYC Public School teacher & that made me cry tears of joy! No more vouchers!

It’s Louisiana state law and constitution concerns and will have no impact on NYC legally speaking.

Remember that court decisions in one state DO affect those in others because they set a precedent. Also, LFT and LAE are both part of national organizations that work for teachers throughout America and that LFT is affiliated with the AFL-CIO. So with this win there is encouragement and a blueprint for other teachers to move similarly.

State court decisions have no precedential effect on other states.

Yeah, they could raise taxes, but there is a hang up on that. Bobby Jindal has pledged “no new taxes” throughout his administration and was recently re-elected to his second term. He has also frozen funding for public schools for about 4 years now so they have been suffering from lack of funding.

Didn’t that end in a lawsuit that was won? Let’s see them raise taxes to pay for private schools. That could be interesting especially there with Jindal. Happy Days are here again.
