What the kids need is warmth. We near the shore have been living without power and heat for over a week in damp houses. On long beach island, where many of my teachers live, it is worse…they have no water or working toilets.. There are many little ones who are poor…about 25% of Long Beach students receive free or reduced priced lunch–kids of day workers. Really needed are socks, gloves, blankets, hats, flashlights, diapers . I have begun collecting at my school. My guess is staten island is similar. Our kids are coming back wed. We expect to have displaced new entrants. Many schools will be closed even longer.
And when all the deeply traumatized students, teachers and administrators from every part of the area affected by Sandy, who will lose a good amount of instructional time to this catastrophe (and the one coming up, I hear a nor’easter is on its way), have to take those tests at the end of the year, and all this upheaval is reflected in their scores…
I’m guessing no allowances will be made and that right now, the school deformers are cackling like villians in comic books. It’s Christmas early for them.
Thoughts and prayers are with your students and all the families affected by Sandy. It is heartwarming knowing your school community, as well as many others, will be there for the many families suffering during this difficult time. I am always in awe of the many wonderful individuals who work in schools who never hesitate to open their hearts and wallets when their kids and families need it. May healing come soon to all.
