Michael Vandveckhoven is a proud parent of a student in the public schools of Meridian, Mississippi.
This is a video that shows his son’s school. The school is half white, half black, about 40% low-income.
For someone like me, who grew up in the age of legal segregation, this is a heartwarming sight.
This is American public education at its finest. It’s not about test scores, it is about building a better society for our future.
Michael is a businessman. He is strongly opposed to charters because he worries that they will restore segregation and ruin his son’s good public school.
I never see any comments about “60 Minutes” TV of several months ago about one group of charter schools. Most, if not all were on work visas from Turkey. One ex-wife of a charter school teacher said her husband had to kick back 40% of his pay to the school. The English teacher was interviewed and I could not understand him.
Remember, charter schools are school choice. There is no affirmative action. That is another way to make the charter school look better.
Diane–I grew up in Mississippi. I went to an integrated school near Meridian. I went back and looked at the ACT/SAT scores from my school. At this “integrated” school, only about 10% of kids took the ACT or SAT. The school may be integrated on its surface, but I will bet good money that few African American kids at that school are getting a shot at college. This school does not make me feel good about America at all.
