NYC parents organized a protest outside the opening of “Won’t Back Down.”
The parents say they don’t want corporations taking over their schools and their children. They know how little the corporations care about equity or children.
They put a video of their demonstration on Youtube called “Educating Maggie.”
The star Maggie Gyllenhall says on camera that she had no idea the film that demonizes teachers union and public education would be controversial. Maggie’s mother was a politically active screenwriter and was previously married to the well-known leftist historian Eric Foner. How can Maggie be so clueless?
Maggie needs educating. It’s never too late to learn.

Isn’t Jake her brother and he dated Taylor Swift…so maybe we can get a song written something about Won’t Shut Up or Will Stand Up or You Don’t Know Diddly Squat…well you get the idea.
Educating Maggie, Viola and Rosie would be a full time job….no recess, no art, no music…just read between the lines next time you get a script from your agent and don’t be so desperate to be in a movie.. The reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are all bad….this will be a flash in the pan.
At least they can’t blame this on the teachers, I think.

But incredible PR and a fund raising tool.

She’s young so maybe she’s rebelling against her parents? Well, 35 is still young. This could be an example as to how everyone from all sides of the political spectrum have been co-opted by this sham.
Don’t you just love the Internet? Facts at your finger tips. Sure beats hunting around in the stacks.
Not to start a family feud, but I wonder what her parents think of this so called reform movement.

Jonah’s Mom had sadly bought into the charter nonsense with three caveats.
“The bottom line is in the details. And we’ve got to make sure that this stays in a public sphere and that it is not used to profit, it’s not used to re-segregate, it’s used to create higher quality education for children.”

Maggie is a paid shill for the film, she made big bucks for her role in the film and she’s not about to bite the hand that is feeding her. I’m sure she was paid much more than the oft quoted obscene average salary ($74K) of those greedy Chicago teachers. Or did she make the fiilm for free, out of pure altruism? She can’t claim ignorance, she’s not stupid…she’s a mercenary.

WBD is getting bad reviews everywhere: Salon, NPR, Hollywood Reporter, AP, Variety Review, Dissent…
Fails to make the grade”: “Theaters should install glow-in-the-dark versions of those old clunking classroom clocks so viewers can count the agonizing minutes ticking by as they watch the movie.”
Oops….bad scores….call in turnaround actors, production company and director.

It’s refreshing to hear that WBD it is being panned by the critics. I still see it as an infomercial.
To further simulate the school experience, perhaps they should cut the AC or heat, just like at my school due to malfunctioning equipment. They could also add a grinding, ringing school bell with two sets of rings to signify dismissal. Yeah! Sounds good to me. A true interactive experience.

Does she have children? If so, do they go to public school? Is she insulated from the real world? Her parents are her parents. She is an adult and has made her own decisions. Maybe she didn’t approve of what her mother stood up for

I loved seeing the parents protesting. Teachers can always be portrayed as money grubbing.
