As I was scrolling through Twitter on Sunday, I read a bunch of anti-Biden tweets, so I added my two cents.
I tweeted:
Maybe it’s just me, but I would rather have Joe Biden (surrounded by highly competent people) asleep than Donald Trump at his best (surrounded by Fascists, haters, and law-breakers) on his best day. @jaketapper @AlexThomp
I once wrote on this blog that I would never criticize Joe Biden because he was running against a man who was totally unfit for the job. Several Trumpers has since written to complain about that statement, saying that it demonstrated my bias, but time has confirmed my view.
Regardless of his mental state, Biden would never have appointed a crackpot to run the National Institutes of Health. He would never have defunded USAID, NPR, PBS, FEMA, the Voice of America, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the U.S. Department of Education. Nor would he have let loose Elon Musk’s DOGS to ransack federal agencies, fire thousands of expert career officers, mess with the Social Security Administration, and hoover up all our personal data, for whatever nefarious purposes he chooses. Unlike Trump, Biden would not have terrorized institutions of higher education and threatened academic freedom and freedom of speech. Unlike Trump, Biden respected the independence of the Justice Department and the FBI and did not put political lackeys in charge of them or treat them as his personal attack dogs.
Frankly, I can’t keep track of the many federal programs and agencies that Trump has recklessly destroyed. If anyone knows of such a compilation, please share it. Trump and Musk have vandalized our government, and despite the thousands of injudicious, capricious firings, have not saved any money at all.
Then I came across this post by Julie Roginsky, which appeared shortly after the nation learned that former President Biden has prostate cancer, which has metasticized to his bones. She is writing about the new book by Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson that aims to prove that President Biden was experiencing severe mental and physical decline while he was in office and that his family and staff collaborated to conceal that decline from the public.
She wrote:
Maybe now they’ll leave Joe Biden alone — or, better yet, spend some time assessing his actual presidency, both in isolation and in comparison with what has followed.
Stick it to legacy media, which has consistently beaten up on a decent man.
Was Biden operating at half-capacity throughout his term? Was he operating at 10%? Here are some facts, regardless of the opinions rendered by amateur neurologists all over media these days.
“Biden inherited an economy that was flat on its back because of the pandemic, and he’s bequeathing an economy that’s flying high,” said Mark Zandi, the chief economist at Moody’s, which just lowered the credit rating of the United States for the first time in history under Donald Trump.
Biden’s economic tenure was marred by the inflation that was a hangover of the Covid pandemic. But the numbers don’t lie about the rest of it. On his watch, the Dow Jones rose by over 40%, while the Nasdaq rose by almost 50%. The economy expanded by 11% during his four years in office (compared with under 9% during Donald Trump’s first term). Despite inflation, retail sales grew by more than 20%. Household net worth was 28% higher when Biden left office than when he took over from Trump. Unemployment was 2% lower at the end of Biden’s tenure than when he entered the White House.
Most importantly, no one was predicting the demise of our 250 year American experiment while Biden was in charge.
Now, Biden is diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, which has spread to his bones. You don’t need to be an oncologist to know that the prognosis is not great.
So maybe now is a good time to reflect not just on Biden’s tenure but on what this obsession with his mental health means for the future of this country. Reporters who have spent the past several weeks on the fainting couch about “the cover up” of his mental condition in the Oval Office have consistently failed to acknowledge the successes of his tenure. They have failed to compare that tenure, both in economic and in governance terms, to what has followed. They have never stopped beating up a man who is no longer in the White House to take stock of the mental health of the current occupant of the White House.
Trump’s mental decline (which is apparent to anyone who has lived in the New York media market for the past four decades) is not happening, you see — because he does not stutter, because he shouts with vigor, because he “truths” at all hours of the night, unlike a septuagenarian who might require more rest.
In short, all this is just “Trump being Trump.” It cannot be that he is stark raving mad.
And Trump’s economic record, the one that is driving inflation ever higher, the one that is destroying consumer sentiment, the one that has driven both the stock and bond markets crazy? Never mind all that. Have you listened to Biden’s conversation with Robert Hur? Now that’s a scandal.
Look, I really don’t care if Biden was confined to a gurney for four years. The facts speak for themselves. The country was more prosperous, the democracy was more stable, the nation was more respected, the people were less terrified, when he was in charge.
Yes, Biden’s staff may have covered up his medical condition while he was in the Oval Office. But the real scandal is the cover up happening now. The media so obsessed with kicking Biden now that’s gone that it is ignoring the very real danger that his successor poses to us all.
I am not a religious person but I hope that whatever higher power exists will look out for Joe Biden. He is a good man, who did well on behalf of the people who entrusted him with the presidency. That is a hell of a lot more than could be said about his successor.
I repeat:
Maybe it’s just me, but I would rather have Joe Biden (surrounded by highly competent people) asleep than Donald Trump at his best (surrounded by Fascists, haters, and law-breakers) on his best day. @jaketapper @AlexThomp

Biden never tried to EO The Constitution to death.

NO, they aren’t going to stop using Biden as a target: They are now claiming that it was Biden who started negotiations with Qatar to gift Biden the “flying palace” 747 jumbo jet.

Arming and funding campaigns of ethnic cleansing and genocide are the worst things a government can do. President Biden is morally superior to nobody.

I repeat: I’d rather have Joe Biden on his worst than Trump on his best day. Trump is killing milling by shutting down USAID. He will take away health insurance for millions of people by slashing Medicaid and cutting taxes for billionaires. He’s destroying NIH and driving scientific expertise out of the country. The list of agencies he has closed or ruined is too long to recount here.

320,000 Americans declared bankruptcy due to medical debt last year, and tens of thousands died because we don’t have Medicare for All. Knowing that Trump is a scoundrel doesn’t justify Biden’s legacy of genocide in the middle east and his failure to address the concerns of working class Americans.

What? Biden is the reason that there is no Medicare for All and no peace in the middle east?
I guess I am supposed to trust your opinion more than Bernie Sanders and AOC, who not only endorsed Biden’s re-election immediately (while Wall Street Dems kept up their anti-Biden whispering campaigns), but they stood by him after his disastrous debate performance while the corporate Dems could not stop demanding Biden’s resignation.
But I do think your opinion is right in line with those corporate Dems who thought Biden didn’t do enough for them. I trust the folks who have been working on progressive issues their entire lives over the Biden-bashers who helped legitimate the right wing lies that Biden did nothing for the working class.
Bernie and AOC endorsed Biden DESPITE Biden being old and losing his energy because Biden was the first president in a long time to do something good for progressives. The folks that blame Biden for every ill in the world as you do are not nearly as trustworthy as Bernie and AOC. I can understand a teenager doing that – I definitely blamed Jimmy Carter for everything bad in the world and bashed Carter with the same evidence-free certainty that you bash Biden. What a fool I was. But as Biden demonstrated, sometimes with age comes wisdom. As Trump demonstrated, sometimes age just keeps you the obnoxious bullying ignoramus you always were

Agreed. This book is a mystery to me… WHY? Why did you write this Jake. I always suspected Jake was republican trying to hide behind a note pad and anchor desk, but attack someone we know put/held the country together after leaving office just seems Jackal- like. He’s like that kid on the playground that goes in for a kick after the bully “wins” the fight.

“Jackal like” is what I meant to write. As in an animal that attacks at the weakest moment, or otherwise attacks the weakest members of a pack. “Jake was Jackal like…”
Darn Auto-correct.

I think some loyalist MAGA followers of Putin’s Agent Orange have skin as thin as the convicted rapist, fraud and felon, and will defend him and attack anyone who repeats any proven truth about their fake messiah.
I’ve been attacked online so many times from MAGA heads, I’ve lost count.
I’ve been called a liar for just repeating to remind readers, so they do not forget, that Trump is a convicted rapist, fraud and felon. I also repeatedly call him the January 6, 2021, Traitor due to how many times he told his mob on that day to fight.
I printed out the transcripts of his far too long, rambling hate and lie filled speech that day. He used the word “fight,” about 19 times, and the fact that the mob was chanting “fight for Trump,” before they marched on the capital and attacked.
I read that some of the mob arrived at the speech with firearms and Trump told the Secret Service it was okay. Those who carried firearms weren’t a threat to him.

The well heeled, Third Way, neoliberal, Democratic establishment is using its privately owned and manipulated media to shift blame from themselves. Blaming President Biden for everything does that. The blame should go to Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Bill Gates, Nancy Pelosi, and all the other free trade, deregulation, and privatization happy technocrats who enriched themselves at everyone else’s expense for decades before the 2024 election — and want more in 2028.

What went wrong in 2024? The same thing that went wrong in 2016. The Democratic Party insiders exerted too much control, the competition for the candidacy was thereby corrupted, and the weakest candidate possible was run. Period.

I admire you, Diane, and I therefore admire those whom you admire. A friend of yours is a friend of mine. Kamala was a great candidate.
She was not good enough. She lost. I believe the main cause was that she did not win the candidacy squarely and therefore appeared to have been selected by the establishment. I know too many voters who voted because Trump didn’t seem beholden to those with gold and those with glitter, among other stupid reasons. She seemed rigged. Hillary seemed rigged too after the DNC shared data with her and not Bernie. Then there is the problem of superdelegates. Democrats need to stop picking their candidates and have fair, competitive primaries. If they don’t, I fear they will only win once in a great while and not enough to stop Republican and libertarian creep.

LCT,
There is much we can say in retrospect.
Now we know that Biden should have stepped aside in 2023 so there could be an open primary.
He stepped back too late for primaries.
Now we know that Biden had cancer and must have known he would not make it through four years.
He had a great team, he managed to get great bills with bipartisan support.
But he should have announced in 2023 that he would not be a candidate in 2024.
I didn’t want to believe the stories about his cognitive decline because I shared his values. His debate performance in June 2024 was horrifying.
But he surrounded himself with first-rate people who want to make America a better society.
Trump wants to destroy everything. Two men who served as his chief of staff said he was a fascist. As we see the crackdown on universities, law firms, media outlets, and anyone who he thinks is his enemy, Trump remains the worst choice. He wants to destroy our government and purge anyone he doesn’t like.
These are scary times. Biden bears a lot of responsibility for Harris’s loss.

Heck, if Barack Obama and Billary Clinton hadn’t conspired to stop him, Biden would have run in 2016 and in my opinion won, preventing Trump from ever taking office in the first place, and in 2024, Biden would have termed out. History would tell a different story.

Remember? In 2008, Hillary Clinton threatened to sue Barack Obama for her campaign finances, and it was settled with the understanding that she would recoup the money with support during her run when Obama was done. They convinced Joe Biden not to run because it was “her turn”.

Thanks for this. Jon Stewart has always been at his best (as he is here) when he is criticizing/satirizing the fawning, embarrassing media coverage of politics and not making the same tired jokes about a politician’s “failures” that everyone else does.
When Jon Stewart took on the so-called liberal media during the Bush 2/Obama years, he helped keep them more honest because he shamed them for their coverage and they didn’t like being publicly shown to be a fool by then very popular Jon Stewart. He’s no longer as influential, but I hope he continues to show Jake Tapper as the unprincipled hack he is.
It’s astonishing that the media could breathlessly report on the supposedly earth shattering story that Biden got older in office and wasn’t as sharp as a “cover-up”, while they completely ignore Trump’s daily barrage of total nonsense. I am glad that at the very end, Jon Stewart noted the hypocrisy. Trump says Biden has stage 9 cancer? Where is the barrage of reporting on Trump’s cognitive decline? And how Trump’s cognitively problems are creating chaos and damage, something Biden’s elderly memory never did.
