Today, Trump met at the White House with President Zelensky of Ukraine to try to hammer out a ceasefire and peace deal. Trump has demanded 50% of all of Ukraine’s mineral wealth to pay for America’s past support. The agreement was prepared for signing, but the meeting collapsed because Trump said Zelensky was “disrespectful.”
This request for “payment” is a curious demand. After World War 2, the U.S. did not ask our European allies to pay us for helping them. Instead, we created the Marshall Plan and sent them billions of dollars to rebuild their societies. They recovered and became our staunchest allies, until Trump, who seems determined to ally us with Russia and break with Europe.
The White House meeting went badly. Both Trump and Vance berated Zelensky. Trump became outraged at Zelensky for his lack of gratitude. Trump repeated the lie that Ukraine started the war.
Before any deal was reached, Trump denounced Zelensky and said Zelensky wasn’t ready to make a deal. Zelensky left the White House. Apparently, he wasn’t willing to accept Trump’s insistence that Ukraine started the war or that Ukraine should give Putin whatever he wanted, while signing away half of Ukraine’s natural resources without any future security guarantees against another Russian invasion.

Maggie Haberman of The New York Times posted:
This is the angriest I’ve seen Trump publicly in a long time. Trump is angry that he isn’t getting thanked and is being challenged.
Trump is bellowing as loudly as he ever does in public.
“You’ve allowed yourself to be in a very bad position,” Trump says, again suggesting Russia’s invasion is Ukraine’s fault. Vance demands to know whether Zelensky has said “thank you” once, noting that Zelensky campaigned in Pennsylvania for Kamala Harris.
Zelensky was hoping for a moment with Trump that could be seen as some form of support from the United States. Instead, it became a two-on-one fight because Zelensky didn’t agree with Trump’s view.
Peter Baker of the New York Times posted:
Never has an American president lectured the leader of an ally in public like this, much less the leader of a country that is fighting off invaders.
I have covered the White House since 1996. There has never been an Oval Office meeting in front of cameras like this in all that time.
With raised voices, President Trump and Vice President JD Vance berated President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine on Friday in a remarkably fractious White House meeting, accusing Zelensky of not being grateful enough for U.S. support and trying to strong-arm him into making a peace deal with Russia
Vance told Zelensky that it was “disrespectful” for him to come to the Oval Office and make his case in front of the news media, while Trump told the Ukrainian leader, “You’re not really in a good position right now.”
At one point, Trump said, “You either make a deal or we are out.”
The New York Times story about the public meeting was written by Peter Baker and summarized some of their notes:
President Trump and Vice President JD Vance berated President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine on Friday in a remarkably fractious White House meeting, accusing the leader of the besieged country of not being grateful enough for U.S. support and strong-arming him into making a peace deal with Russia.
With voices raised, Mr. Vance told Mr. Zelensky that it was “disrespectful” for him to come to the Oval Office and make his case in front of the news media, while Mr. Trump told the Ukrainian leader, “You’re not really in a good position right now.” Mr. Trump added, “You’re gambling with World War III.” At one point, Mr. Trump said, “You either make a deal or we are out.”
The exchange in front of television cameras was one of the most dramatic moments ever to play out in public in the Oval Office and underscored the radical break between the United States and Ukraine since Mr. Trump took office. Mr. Trump has effectively sided with Russia while falsely blaming Ukraine for starting the war and not giving in to his demands for how to end it.
Despite Mr. Trump’s claim last week, it was Russia that first attacked Ukraine in 2014 and then mounted a full-scale invasion in 2022. Although Ukrainian elections have been suspended for the past three years under martial law, Mr. Zelensky became president on the back of a landslide election victory in 2019. President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, by contrast, is an actual dictator whose elections have been widely dismissed as frauds and who faces an international arrest warrant for war crimes.
Mr. Trump had seemed to be trying to put his rift with Mr. Zelensky to the side on Thursday before their meeting at the White House, brushing off a question about whether he still considers the Ukrainian leader a dictator.
“Did I say that?” Mr. Trump asked. “I can’t believe I said that. Next question.”
At a later news conference with Prime Minister Keir Starmer of Britain, Mr. Trump did not respond to a question about whether he owed Mr. Zelensky an apology for calling him a dictator. “We’re going to have a very good meeting,” he said. “I have a lot of respect for him.”
His sharp language last week about Mr. Zelensky contrasted with his assessment of Mr. Putin, whom he has only praised since winning a second term. Just this week, the president called Mr. Putin “a very smart guy” and “a very cunning person.” He said that he believes that Mr. Putin really wants peace and added on Thursday that “he’ll keep his word” if a deal is reached, despite multiple Russian violations of agreements in the past.
While he has spoken with Mr. Putin by telephone, Mr. Trump has given little sense of how he expects to negotiate either a cease-fire or an enduring peace agreement. During last year’s campaign, he promised to end the war within 24 hours and to do so even before his inauguration, neither of which he actually did.
During Thursday’s news conference with Mr. Starmer, Mr. Trump expressed a mix of optimism and fatalism about his chances of making peace. “I think it’s going to happen, hopefully quickly,” he said. “If it doesn’t happen quickly, it may not happen at all.”
Mr. Starmer and other European leaders have offered to contribute troops to a multinational peacekeeping force on the ground in Ukraine after the fighting halts. But Mr. Trump resisted pressure to commit U.S. forces to help, even without ground troops, or to offer security guarantees to Ukraine against renewed Russian aggression.
Since taking office, Mr. Trump has demanded that Ukraine turn over some of its natural resources as payback for military aid provided under President Joseph R. Biden Jr. to defend itself against Russia. While Mr. Trump has falsely claimed that the United States has contributed $350 billion and Europe only $100 billion, in fact, according to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, Europe has allocated $138 billion compared with $119 billion from the United States.
Under a draft of the rare minerals agreement reviewed by The New York Times, Ukraine would contribute half of its revenues from the future monetization of natural resources, including critical minerals, oil and gas. Mr. Trump characterized the deal on Thursday as an economic development boon. “It’ll be good for both countries,” he said.

It was the most awful disgraceful behavior I have ever seen by a President in a my lifetime. Disgusting bullying by both Trump and Vance; just horrific. But Zelenskyy refused to bend the knee and was strong and heroic as he has been throughout the invasion and war.

This performance wasn’t for an American audience; it was for the Kremlin.
One other thing; the reporter who questioned Zelenskyy is Marjory Taylor Greene’s boyfriend Brian Glenn, a reporter for the pro-Trump media network Real America’s Voice.

Zelensky is a better person than any of the ads-kissing Republicans in Washington right now. He is fighting for the safety of his countrymen, and Trump is looking for him to give up and give in to tyranny. Sickening.

Doing this live in front of cameras is only going to solidify the UK and EU’s support for Ukraine.
The EU made the first such transfer of €1.5 billion to Ukraine in July 2024, with 90% designated for military support through the EPF and 10% for reconstruction needs. The EU also has trained 70,000 members of Ukraine’s armed forces. | Jan 15, 2025

Let’s see where this goes. But I’d stay away from Trump for awhile, or anyone who knows him and kisses his xxx. This was a setup from the jump. Substantive meetings like this are never public nor filmed.
Trump and Vance had two objectives: To tell Zelensky to eff off, and to parade their power. They were never going to give Zelensky anything, and they wanted to show what tough guys they are.
Certainly they would never send American troops to fight alongside Ukrainians. That would risk Americans fighting Russians on the ground, so that was out, no matter who the president was. But the kind of aid needed was never going to happen. This was two sadistic cats toying with a tiny mouse. It was bullying to show everyone whose playground this is.
Now they have their excuse to abandon Ukraine entirely, and Ukrainians will be slaughtered wholesale, while America turns her back.
These bastards are beyond the pale. Trump and Vance are cowards. And any doubt about who Vance is has been washed away: He’s a sociopath, pure and simple.

This was staged to make Zelensky look like he is being unreasonable. It turned out making Trump and Vance look like a couple of mob bosses trying to strong arm Zelensky. Perhaps they were trying to impress Putin, but they made America look vulgar and brutish. It looked like a confrontational scene from some reality TV show. Imagine that!

Try to actually watch the video, which was on The Hill for a while this morning. None of the written reports can capture the snarling, spitting contempt that Trump and Vance spewed at Zelinsky. Zelinsky sat there like a teenager being whipped, but stayed cool, took his shots, and did not disgrace himself. He didn’t seem to take it personally, either: he stuck it out long enough for Trump and Vance to put on the full show.

Vance is insufferable. He’s upset because he wants to be thanked? Petty.
There are people who help others every day and rarely get thanked. As teachers we try to help every student be better today than they were yesterday. Kids don’t say thank you for teaching me when they exit daily.
These two clowns are an absolute embarrassment. I think the poster above is correct in stating that this was a setup from the beginning.

As a side note, I bet Zelensky knew that it was all a bully’s show at his expense. I’m embarrassed by what he had to go through to see that trump wanted thanks and loyalty to something he did not do.

Ukraine will never, ever be a member of NATO. (Losers of wars don’t dictate terms.)

Not so. Ukraine becoming a NATO member was objected to by a few NATO members, thus was not in the Ukraine-proposed version of the minerals deal. Security guarantees were defined thus: funding the Ukrainian army, ensuring a force of at least 800,000 troops. An allied peacekeeping contingent to prevent a new Russian attack. Economic guarantees, including Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. Clause 10 of proposed minerals deal explicitly states that this agreement on the fund* is an integral element of bilateral and multilateral agreements, as well as specific steps toward establishing lasting peace and strengthening economic and security resilience.
[*an investment fund — with specific terms and amounts, which would need to be ratified by the parliament Verkhovna Rada. “In the next agreement, we can discuss security guarantees in more detail or specify amounts — how the fund will be managed, etc. We are ready to talk if the condition is that future aid to Ukraine will not be free. This is the new reality.” (Shmyhal, PM of Ukraine)]

“was objected to by a few NATO members” means russia, us, and turkey.
“An allied peacekeeping contingent to prevent a new Russian attack” that russia stated they do not agree with and will refuse.
“accession to the European Union” that russia does not want and refuses to acknowledge.
“In the next agreement, we can discuss security guarantees in more detail or specify amounts —” That probably will not happen.
Now why would you want to agree that your country will never be free from russian power? Why would you agree to sign mineral rights away without a detail of what that includes?

President Zelensky’s Walkout Was A Strategic ♟️ Chessboard Move
Zelensky walking out on Dump & Vance was a strategic chessboard move.
Zelensky, Europe & Ukraine don’t want Trump going any further towards Russia. As we know, Trump loves Putin. So today Ukraine chose to delay that inevitable drift of Trump to Putin. And delay any concrete actions by the Government of the United States towards Russia. Walking out was a good thing. There is no deal. There is a delay. And at least for now Trump does not get to pretend that he did something. And he & Vance look like Horse’s Rear Ends for how they treated Zelensky after all that Ukraine has endured.
The world does not view Trump & Vance as big time deal makers. They look like chumps. In the meantime all the smart diplomats of Europe now realize nothing has actually happened with this “agreement” that was NEVER any kind of agreement in the first place. So now they will simply continue to prepare for European Security without a friendly United States. Ukraine will continue to use this war to financially bleed Russia dry until Russia finally runs out of money & gas. And Trump can go to hell thinking he did something. When we all just saw that he did not do squat.

I think this is correct. Anyone with a brain watching this could see it was a setup for show [as evidenced by cameras]. Which means Trump / Vance [/ Rubio?] knew the deal would not fly without security guarantees, which they had no intention of providing. A dog-&-pony show to convince public Zelenskyy is incalcitrant & gets blame for deal failing. Which doesn’t succeed—because what public actually sees is Trump/ Vance virtually hounding Zelenskyy out of negotiations on spurious “grounds.” [You didn’t say “thank you”/ grovel enough??]

I wish the NYT would quit characterizing this meeting as Trump strong-arming Zelensky to make a “PEACE DEAL”.
Trump is not demanding a peace deal. He is demanding total surrender – Trump is offering a “total capitulation to Putin taking over an independent country” deal. Calling this a “peace deal” is Orwellian – a sign of how much our so-called liberal media has been captured by the right wing false reality and their determination to give credibility to this.
Next up, the NYT reports that Trump offers Denmark a new “peace deal” – he won’t nuke Denmark if Greenland becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of the US/Trump inc.
Stop calling it a “peace deal”, NYT. There is no “both sides” to whether what Trump is doing has anything to do with peace!

It really is right out of “The Emperor’s New Clothes”. It doesn’t matter if Trump is stark naked – the Republicans will fawn and admire his most beautiful outfit in the world.
The very sad tragedy of the Republican party is that if one of their own small children actually pointed out the truth of what was right before their eyes, the Republicans would harshly punish that child and warn any other child that if they dare to do anything but admire and fawn over Trump’s beautiful new outfit and profess the truth of any absurdity that Trump utters, that child will also be duly punished.
What a nasty, ugly world the Republicans – and every single person who votes Republican – have embraced. We need to start calling them out for what they are because waiting until they commit atrocities in the name of the leader they so eagerly voted for is far too late. They aren’t good people. They are the Germans who were fine with their Jewish neighbors disappearing, and some are the ones who eagerly participated in the annihilation. Period.

I realize (based on a Supreme Court ruling) we can’t prosecute President Trump, and (based on evidence) an impeachment would likely be a complete waste of time when we clearly have more pressing issues as so many pieces of our government and democracy are being thrown in a big dumpster. But can we court-martial him for “conduct unbecoming the President of the United States and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces” or something? How do we stop these statements of love for enemies of democracy from the president?
To suggest in full view of the media and in a bullying tone that the elected representative of the Ukrainian people is a dictator at fault for jeopardizing the lives of millions of people and “gambling with World War III,” accusing this European president of not expressing sufficient thanks to the U.S. and being “disrespectful” to our country and president, is unrecognizable and unfitting in the conduct of our highest elected representative. Can Presidents Bush, Clinton, Obama, and Biden write a letter to Congress or something?
