On October 7, The Orlando Sentinel published the following editorial. Note that the newspaper is owned by Alden Global Capital, which has bought up many other newspapers and gutted their newsrooms.
The Orlando Sentinel and South Florida Sun Sentinel will no longer endorse candidates in races for governor, Senate or president, including this year’s races.
This is a company-wide decision and very limited in scope. It applies only to endorsements in these two races. All other endorsements remain entirely within each newspaper’s discretion, and we are working hard on our endorsements for U.S. House, the Legislature, city and county commissioners and mayors and school board races.
Any public officials who are popping champagne at this announcement might want to re-cork their celebrations. Tribune Publishing’s two Florida papers, the Orlando Sentinel and Sun Sentinel, will continue our tradition of robust, well-researched editorials that hold Florida’s leaders responsible for their actions. When those decisions are not in the state’s best interests or driven by partisan ulterior motives, we will continue to say so.
This restriction is in line with corporate-level dictates in other media companies, some of which have eliminated endorsements entirely. It’s well within the long-standing tradition of American editorial pages, which leaves the final say on endorsements to each paper’s publisher.
Since Alden Global Capital took over Tribune Publishing in May 2021, its leaders have made it clear that they support robust, local editorial pages. This is the first time they have asserted their traditional role, but this discussion of which races to endorse in occurs at newspapers every day in the run-up to an election. Company leaders acted out of concern that contests for president, U.S. Senate and governor are becoming more national in character, and that our editorial advocacy is strongest locally.
Corporate leaders also worry that common ground is being lost to culture wars. We’ve all seen society become more polarized. Look at what’s happened since Florida’s 2018 gubernatorial election. Could we have imagined that we would be so deeply divided over how to handle the pandemic that we would see shrieking parents dragged out of school board meetings? Or that partisan voices on both sides of the divide would take turns decrying law enforcement and medical professionals as villains or heroes?
But we aren’t going to cede that common ground on the eve of a high profile, surprisingly competitive Senate race and a contest for governor widely seen as a prelude to the 2024 presidential election (with another likely player in his Palm Beach mansion).
Florida’s tradition of spirited journalistic debate is often shaped by editorials, but also informed by readers’ letters to the editor and columns by us, readers and public officials. They are the heartbeat of our opinion pages, and in the great Florida tradition, our readers are not shy about telling us when they think we’ve gotten it wrong.
We’ll continue our work of endorsing many candidates for local, regional and state office, judgeships, Congress, ballot questions and constitutional amendments. We’ll celebrate fact and expose fiction. And to quote Tom Petty, we won’t back down. Nor are we expected to.
Our corporate leadership has made that crystal clear. We know our readers will have plenty to say about this decision. You’ll find our letter guidelines at the bottom of this editorial.
At the end of the day, we suspect even our toughest critics will agree: We all love Florida at the top of our lungs, con mucho gusto. That hasn’t changed, and it won’t.

Ms. Ravitch, why do you support the Kamala Harris and the Democratic party, which is the party of warmongering and censorship? Why do you support the neocon foreign policy of the democrats, as endorsed by Dick Cheney and his daughter, Liz?

As you know, Liz Cheney was severely punished for daring to criticize Trump. That’s censorship.
Why do you support the fascist Republican party who has promised to go to war against the “enemy within” — all of us?
Miguel, why do you Republicans keep spewing violent rhetoric at us and threaten our lives and the lives of our family?
Miguel, it’s sad when people like you foment violence against other Americans because your “leader” tells you we are your enemy, or tells you that people are killing and eating your dogs and cats.
Why do you believe it is okay for Trump to lie to foment a violent insurrection and more violence against people like us?
What’s wrong with Trump supporters that they hate their country so much?
What’s wrong with Trump supporters like Miguel who supports more violent acts being done upon Americans, even children?
You folks have become like Nazis – promising to hurt anyone who won’t worship at the altar of Trump.
What is wrong with you? I hope you are a troll, because people who keep saying they support Trump because they like that Trump has promised retribution to us – because everyone who doesn’t worship Trump is an “enemy” who must be punished – are simply evil.

NYC public school parent, like your fellow democrats, you don’t know what fascism is. Textbook fascism is government control of private industry without explicitly government ownership. It’s the democrats who support and engage in fascism . What do you call all the ridiculous COVID lockdowns and restrictions????? What do you call the poisonous COVID shot mandate? Thankfully, I didn’t get that poison and the supreme court struck it down. As for supporting and promoting violence, I don’t see republicans doing that. It’s the foot soldiers of the Democratic party? Do you not remember all the acts of violence committed by BLM and Antifa, especially during the summer of 2020? Do you think they were all red MAGA hat Trump supporters doing that? When did I ever say I supported violence, including violence against children? It is your party that supports murdering unborn babies at any stage and cutting the sexual organs off of children via “gender reassignment” surgery.

Also, NYC Public School parent, I don’t see the republican party advocating for censorship of people whose opinions they disagree with and wanting to eliminate entire social media companies for allowing opinions to be expressed that are contrary to the party line. However, this is exactly what the Democratic party advocates for and apparently you and others here support it as well. So, who’s the real fascist?

Miguel,
I see the Republican Party in alliance with rightwing groups like “Moms for Liberty” demanding censorship of books that students read, books that teachers use in their classrooms, even books in public libraries, even topics that may be taught. Republicans want to return to a time when the voices and faces of nonwhite Americans were not heard or seen. They want to censor the teaching of history. They want to pretend that LGBT people don’t exist.
I have seen no example of Democrats censoring social media companies or the press or schools or libraries.

So sick of people like Miguel and Trump lying in the hopes that people who believe those lies will violently harm myself and my family because we aren’t Trump supporters.
We can expect that soon “Miguel” will be posting the lie that Haitian immigrants are kidnapping and killing people’s pets – Trump said so – and then Miguel will accuse me of supporting the killing of pets.
Then Miguel will be posting the lie that Obama wasn’t a legitimate president – Trump said he had proof that Obama wasn’t born in the US — and Miguel will accuse me of wanting an illegitimate president to ruin our country.
Miguel’s only reason for posting those Trump lies are the same reason that Trump spoke those lies — to encourage hate and violence against anyone who doesn’t agree that Trump’s lies are true.
People who incite hate with their lies like Miguel and Trump should be called out.
What is wrong with Trump supporters that they have to lie and incite hate to win?
Miguel, here is something I imagine we both agree is true: You share Trump’s values.

So this is an industry-wide trend.
I have no problem with this in the abstract. It is the prerogative of the paper’s owners, and it is consistent with fostering an image of a newspaper’s independence. In theory.
But I do have a problem with how this is unfolding: Just days before the election, in newsrooms with editorial boards that are certainly anti-Trump, from directives by billionaire owners, with one candidate notoriously hostile to a free press, who has made threats against media and has a track record of intimidation. None of that is good. It’s all bad.
This is also terrible precedent for any newspaper that wants readers to have faith in the independence of its editorial board.

Why are the opinions of editorial writers any more important than the opinions of other people who make the effort to be reasonably well-informed about major issues? Political journalism is now overwhelmingly a very partisan occupation, with a large and increasing number of journalists disavowing the need for fairness. Several journalism professors have openly said that all journalism should be activism, and there are many examples of younger journalists at big name outlets having that philosophy.
I prefer opinion pages that have a genuine diversity of well-reasoned opinions. The idea that editorial writers are high-minded gurus who know what’s best for the rest of us is ridiculous. At any rate, their influence is negligible.

Whether newspaper editorial board endorsements are a good thing, a bad thing, or a meaningless thing is a separate question. Like I said, I don’t have a problem in theory with a non-endorsement policy.

From what I’ve been reading lately, I think this response, and others, is out of fear of threats and violence from Traitor Trump’s fascist MAGA cult, and what might happen to them if they recommended Harris and she lost.
They also fear what a fascist dictator like the convicted rapist, fraud and felon, Traitor Trump, who is a vicious malignant narcissist, would do to major media sites that did not endorse him?
Their fear maybe justified.
Most of us already know what the traitor would do. To find out, look at what happens in Russia, North Korea, and Iran when the media doesn’t report what those ruthless autocratic governments expect.
I just read that election workers who are not totally loyal to Traitor Trump, are getting increased threats. Being an honest election worker with values may not be safe. Since 2020, about a third have already quit, making room for Trump loyalists to possibly fill their positions.

Diane: David Folkenflik, NPR media correspondent speaking on MSNBC, just a while ago, gives a rundown of events leading up to the un-endorsement of Harris. He suggests that Bezos the “owner” of the Washington Post basically caved to Trump’s pressure–apparently Bezos has bookoo financial entanglements (Amazon) with government contracts, along with Microsoft, that were used as arm-twisting leverage to “veto” (in case Trump wins) the original idea of the editorial board endorsing Harris.
If that’s the case, if not bribery, then fear and intimidation about exacting vengeance on the three major networks, or, as Michelle Wallace said, “its one example in history where pleasing an autocrat has worked.”

Diane . . . a little venting here: I’m also hoping CBS does a special report this week, before the election—they have huge momentary power here . . .on the power moves that Trump is both promising and doing–shutting down CBS and the INSTITUTION Sixty Minutes? . . . but they have crossover power with the Fox News rabbit hole people–Leslie Stahl and Scott Pelley could blast Trump’s insanity in ways that no one else can–as long as they just don’t play the defensive-only card. But everyone is so intimidated—the deal with Bezos and the Washington Post’s NOT endorsing Harris (as their editorial board wanted to do) made it crystal clear how the power structure of fascism works in our time:
Use Murdoch/Fox news to enhance and close off his followers, to feed them the lie over and over again, appealing to the very American values that HE is trying to destroy, fairness, the little guy, going rogue against X (John Wayne), and the topper: loyalty; even an adolescent identity with mob-type people like the Sopranos, Bonnie and Clyde, or the Godfather, not to mention the “bad boy” thing; telling them how awful democrats (think horns growing out Paul Pelosi’s head) and other news outlets are, appeal to their worst and thoughtless passions, even though they are often made-up by Trump; . . .
. . . THEN weal his followers’ voting power as a political tool to threaten, intimidate, or bribe anyone who needs those votes to survive and who would otherwise be honest about Trump. (Cheney is a star–who would have thought it?) Trump must have a truly-inspired intimidation machine working around the clock—probably headed by Eric and the two-headed monster: the two Stephens, Bannon and Miller. . . . Miller who cannot wait to separate more Mexican children from their parents.
And apparently all the selling of trinkets is a way to get foreign powers to wash their contributions to the “Trump campaign” (code for: “pockets”).
There are other elements to cult power going on, but apparently that’s what happened with members of Congress during the impeachment trials and with Bezos–the threat was apparently (NPR reporting) about a huge deal between Amazon, Microsoft, and the government; and then there is the LA Times–and whatever happened to Taylor Swift? They all lay down at his feet. Swift had to cancel performances for the threats–in Europe! But the power base just keeps getting fire hosed with Trump’s paranoia seen as “oh poor Trump, they’re after me.” And everything he does is self-aggrandizing–embarrassing to most, but not to Trump or his followers–he is a walking psychological vacuum.
The people on Morning Joe are apoplectic–it’s hard to watch, as is Nicole Wallace. And during Harris’ rally in Texas last night–I turned to the “regular” channels and there was nothing about it–the Dodgers playing in the World Series and some really stupid game shows. Half of the nation is sitting out their own political demise. Somehow, over the decades, way too many have slowly abandoned or been separated from their political power–in a democracy, that is the same thing as turning oneself into a pawn. Good people doing nothing for the good.
One of the utterly inane things I’ve speculated about is that, if somehow Trump wins, they’ll pick Harris apart about all sorts of “she should have done this or she should have done that,” but in fact, for way too many still in this country, it’s that shallow but powerful thing . . . that she is a she. If she were a (white) man with that resume, there would be no question who was ahead, all along the way.
Eugene Robinson wrote an op-ed (yes, in WAPO) about the “Double Standard for Harris and Trump has Reached a Breaking Point” (see him discussing it on Weekend Joe this morning.) I’m still reeling from the SCOTUS debacle. CBK

Yes, they seem to believe that if they kowtow now, they will be spared. As if it will ultimately make a difference to them or their families. Lots of “good friends” of Putin learned quickly that if he decided it was more convenient to be rid of you to get your resources, you were gone.

We depend on our local newspaper to provide research plus their recommendations for all elected offices. Now, we can no longer rely on the Orlando Sentinel. Yet, all year long, their reporters and editors have clearly demonstrated a clear bias in favor of their preferred candidates. Not making public their obvious choice shows they lack the courage that newspapers across the country clearly display. It’s time that they get out of this debate period. Just don’t report on political candidates. Sell ads and provide local news. You are no longer relevant to any political discussion.
