I admit that I was very nervous before the debate. Trump is a polished entertainer, Harris is an experienced prosecutor.
She beat him. She baited him and he took the bait every time. He got angrier and angrier. He was furious. His face was contorted with rage. He sulked, he pouted. She stayed cool, collected, calm, and smiling. She was fearless and strong. She looked at him with amusement and disdain. She was never defensive.
She was terrific on abortion. She spoke about women who were having a miscarriage, bleeding in the back of their car because the doctors are afraid to give her the abortion she needs, because doctors are afraid of being arrested. She made it real.
Trump lied. He said that “everyone” wanted Roe v. Wade overturned–Republicans, Democrats, and independents. Every legal scholar, he said, wanted it gone. Lies.
Daniel Dale, the CNN fact-checker, said that Trump told 33 lies, Harris told one. Open the link to see the fact check.
The funniest moment was when Trump said that Haitian immigrants were eating cats and other pets in Springfield, Ohio. This story was circulated yesterday and was debunked by the police and city manager in Springfield. Why didn’t anyone on Trump’s staff let him know.?
I don’t know whether the debate will affect the vote. I hope it does.

I have been an actor and a lawyer. And lawyers who do actual trials (which is not the same thing as a “trial lawyer”), like actors who are having a good night, know when their performance’s working parts are all humming.
Kamala owned that stage from the beginning. You could see she knew she was on and was winning. Her nonverbal responses to Trump’s bloviation were the responses of a winner. She was prepared, much more knowledgeable, and never, ever ceded control over anything.

She made it clear this election is about our people and the future direction of the country. She came across as informed and strong but compassionate. I appreciate CNN’s fact-checking, but I question the “33 lies” of Trump.
This is from Trump’s very first comment:
“They are taking over the towns. (lie) They’re taking over buildings.(lie) They’re going in violently. (lie) These are the people that she and Biden let into our country. And they’re destroying our country. They’re dangerous. They’re at the highest level of criminality. (lie) And we have to get them out. We have to get them out fast. I created one of the greatest economies in the history of our country. (lie) I’ll do it again and even better.” (lie)
I count 6 lies in those couple sentences alone!
This is just a few sentences from Trump’s 2nd comment:
“everybody knows I’m an open book. (lie) Everybody knows what I’m going to do. (lie) Cut taxes very substantially. (true) And create a great economy like I did before. We had the greatest economy.(lie) We got hit with a pandemic. (true) And the pandemic was, not since 1917 where 100 million people died has there been anything like it? (true) We did a phenomenal job with the pandemic. (lie)
Trump’s 3rd comment:
” it’s a great plan. (lie) It’s a plan that’s going to bring up our worth, our value as a country. It’s going to make people want to be able to go and work and create jobs and create a lot of good, solid money for our — for our country.(lie) And just to finish off, she doesn’t have a plan. She copied Biden’s plan. And it’s like four sentences, like run-Spot-run. Four sentences that are just oh, we’ll try and lower taxes. (lie)
“I’ve never seen a worse period of time. (lie) People can’t go out and buy cereal bacon or eggs or anything else. (lie) These the people of our country are absolutely dying with what they’ve done. (lie) They’ve destroyed the economy (lie) and all you have to do it look at a poll. The polls say 80 and 85 and even 90% that the Trump economy was great that their economy was terrible.” (true, but the fact this is true is an indictment of our media).
“I got more votes than any president, sitting president in history by far.” (lie)
It’s amazing how Trump can make the most ridiculous false boasts and they aren’t lies, or at least just characterized as insane ramblings that there is absolutely zero chance are true:
“That is a war that’s dying to be settled. I will get it settled before I even become president. If I win, when I’m President-Elect, and what I’ll do is I’ll speak to one, I’ll speak to the other, I’ll get them together. That war would have never happened. ” (I don’t know how to count the lies in this short bit)
And that doesn’t count the many times Trump boasted some version of “I built one of the greatest economies ever”.
I couldn’t find a single time when Trump spoke without a lie!
So I question the 33 lies number. I suspect that’s a lot closer to the number of times Trump actually said something that was true.

The only question is whether Harris influenced folks she needs to win. Harris handily reinforced Trump’s image as a self-regarding, bombastic, racist, lying, fascist. That is insufficient. That was already all too clear.
A portion of the undecided voters she needs want to hear more about what she would do to address their persistent economic insecurity. Her answers about housing, prices, health care, and climate change were too vague. Another segment, wanted to hear that she will end U.S. support for the genocide in Palestine, who rather than voting for Trump will either stay home or vote third party. Any hopes were sorely disappointed.
I want her to win, not because I am a fan of the centrist policies she represents, but because I think it is vital that we protect the rights we have already won, but also our ability to organize for what we need. I fear that unless Harris can do a more credible job of responding to those two groups of voters, she will lose.

Nope. It’s only “doomed” if Trump wins. Trump and Putin and Netanyahu all give a special “thank you” to the 2016 “it’s doomed either way” voters who gave us the far right Supreme Court that makes this presidential election the one thing standing between a “Putin democracy” and a democracy where progressives have a voice – even if that voice is not yet close to what most of us want – and the chance to gain even more of a voice in the future.
I wish progressives had a chance to have a voice in Putin’s “democratic” Russia. They don’t. It mystifies me why anyone who isn’t on the far right wants that for the US. But, whatever. You are free to believe that’s okay. Unfortunately, if Trump wins, the rest of us will no longer be free to say that it isn’t. Just look at how many Republicans, how many election officials, how many people in deep red states are already deeply frightened about expressing their opinions if their opinions are not what the far right/Trumpists believe are acceptable. Those folks aren’t afraid because some neighbor is going to criticize them for their views. They are afraid because the Republicans are making it seem not just ok, but necessary, to use force to “save” this country from the hoards of immigrants out to kill them. Or whatever nonsense Trump spouts about their pets being kidnapped and eaten.

That’s an easy answer. Four years ago, the economy was closed down because of the pandemic. There was no vaccine. Many lost their jobs. People were afraid of catching the virus. I’m not sure why she didn’t answer directly; it’s an easy question.

She didn’t answer because it’s not that easy. Yes, the economy has re-opened and jobs have come back with extras. But many people have multiple of those jobs and they’re still struggling. Homelessness, medical debt and bankruptcy are all at record levels. Inflation has hit people hard and wages have not kept pace -gas and groceries are barely affordable for a lot of people. And the pandemic rages on, but pandemic protections were all ended. We don’t even know how many people are still dying of it, although conservative estimates say at least 1,000/week. The majority of people are not doing better, but meanwhile our money goes to corporations, billionaires, Ukraine and Israel.

I chalk it up to first question jitters. Not a big deal. But yes, she could have had a better answer.

She probably didn’t answer that very first question because she had it drummed into her that she needed to “tell people about her policies” and she ignored the question to do that. But fortunately, she quickly realized to ignore the “we need more policy details from Kamala, just like Trump gave us” advice and pivoted from what looked to me like a single-minded determination to give specific policy details instead of answering the questions.
However, it is certainly possible that Kamala considered that question similar to the CNN interviewer’s question to get her to comment on Trump saying she just became Black recently.
“NEXT!….”
It is true that Kamala didn’t answer “are you better off now” but OF COURSE everyone in this country is better off than in 2020 when the pandemic closed down the country, trucks were parked outside hospitals to take care of the bodies that couldn’t fit in the morgue, hospitals and doctors’ offices were practically closed for most treatment and people put off seeing doctors unless it was an emergency.
The only people who weren’t suffering were folks like Trump who knew he and his family would immediately cut the line for whatever medical treatment he needed with round the clock expensive medical care that 99% of Americans didn’t get even when medical resources weren’t stretched thin by a pandemic.
This has to be a joke that maybe things were better because hospitals were stressed, Americans were dying, people didn’t have jobs and worried about whether Trump and the Republican states would throw them off of assistance, but at least there wasn’t inflation!
The question is whether you believe things would have been better off if Trump had stayed in office and enacted his “tariff, tax cut for billionaires drill baby drill” policies? I am sure Elon Musk believes he would be.
Trump certainly said he had solutions for everything last night. He also has a fake university to sell ya.
And everything Trump touches gets worse.
But if you believe him, vote for him. If you believe he’s a liar, but your concern for the people who we all know would have been worse off under Trump is MIA, than help defeat the Democrat any way you can.
Or do what Trump does and shout that things would have been great for those people who are suffering if Trump could have given rich people a bigger tax cut.

I have two desktops and multiple monitors, but I could not keep up with Traitor Trump’s Tsunami of lies. And CNN missed at least one of the few I caught and had time to fact-check while the debate was live.
Trump’s lie about Germany giving up on green energy. I don’t remember the traitor’s exact words in that lie but here are a few facts to prove whatever the traitor said was misleading.
Bold is a pull quote:
Renewable energy sources accounted for 59.7% of Germany’s net public electricity generation in 2023, a record high. This includes:
Germany’s government has set a goal of generating 80% of the country’s electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Some say that this goal is achievable if current positive trends continue.
Germany has been a global leader in applying renewable energy and environmental technologies for decades. Some of Germany’s most important sources of renewable energy include biomass, which is used to produce biogas and biofuels, and rapeseed oil, which is used to produce biodiesel.
In addition, no one (Traitor Trump, the moderators or Harris) mentioned how much the European NATO members spend on defense and how many people are in uniform in those countries who do not wear US military uniforms. The money the US contributes to NATO is for the cost of administration.
The US contributes 16% to NATOs annual administrative budget. The US has one or two major bases in Europe and less than 100k troops stationed there and most are for administrative office jobs. There are some military advisers.
NATOs annual budget as about EUR 3.8 billion. The defense budgets of the NATO members in Europe is more than 240 billion Euros for a combined military strength of close to 2 million troops. More than Russia. More than the US.
Washington allotted $816.7 billion for (global) defense spending in 2023, according to the Pentagon. In the same year, NATO’s budget was 3.3 billion euros ($3.59 billion), according to its website. The U.S. contributed 15.8% of the NATO tab, which is around 521 million euros ($567 million US).
Fact Check: US contributes 16% of NATO annual budget, not two-thirds | Reuters
$567 million US dollars contributed to NATO is not anywhere close to the 240 billion Euros NATO members in Europe spend on their military annually. Today’s exchange rate is 1.10 US dollar for each Euro. Do the math.

Another observation: I was actually pleased w/Moderators Muir & Davis. (I, who love Kyle Clark–&, again, I hope you looked up/found/watched the 9News Colorado CD4 Primary GOP Debate.) They did it w/a mild but clear tone & maintained control of the debate throughout the evening, getting to lots of topics & not letting either candidate run over them.”
They had facts (NPR: “They fact-checked unlike CNN policy, leav(ing) the fact checking to the candidates during the June debate”) & disputed some of it45’s lies (the Haitians kidnapping/eating pets; the “crime is going down in all the other countries in the world” & after-birth abortions (!!–IMO, a BIG one!), whereby live babies were being killed.
While they let it45 go on talking, it seemed almost as if they did it on purpose, since the longer it blathered on, the more nonsensical it became, repeating ridiculous exaggerations & lies. & its pointing to Viktor Orban as a world leader (dictator) who admires it45? (Hoping the 67.1 million viewers know who he is or looked him up if they don’t.)

Well, I watched about a half hour of the debate and that was all I could take because, while I was glad that ABC was fact-checking some of the whirlwind of tRump lies & Harris was coming across so well, I was upset that they kept referring to him as “President” instead of “former president.” And watching him con and treat people badly makes me physically ill, literally –so I got nauseous, jitters and a migraine and had to stop watching.
This is not new for me though. The night of the 2020 election, I was already very sick then from a condition that my doctor at the time called “a spastic colon” (which manifests with symptoms that are too gross to describe). And after I heard tRump say then, “We want all voting to stop. We don’t want them to find any ballots at four o’clock in the morning and add them to the list… And as far as I’m concerned, we already have won it,” I became so violently ill that I felt like I was truly about to die. I couldn’t watch anymore, and I was very sick for days after that –so sick that I just gave up on everything, including quitting my job!

Also, ProPublica has an interesting section on Trump/inc./family’s relationship with other European governments: apparently, he’s selling the power of the United States . . . again. CBK

He was fact checked on the bold lies, not the many small lies. She didn’t lie, although CNN said she exaggerated how bad the inflation rate was when Dems took over in 2021. It was not the “worst” since the Great Depression.”

I guess that “what about”-ism outweighs Trump’s lifetime of atrocities and disregard for facts.

I’ve seen tRump talk about embarrassing stuff, but I haven’t seen him actually demonstrate that he was clearly feeling embarrassed himself. I assumed he was embarrassed about losing the 2020 election, because he seemed to be in hiding for weeks after that –though apparently he was busy scheming about how he could turn that around and make people believe that he won. When he finally emerged (at the Ellipse Jan 6, I think?) I recall noticing immediately that he’d stopped getting his hair dyed, so I thought his looks mattered a lot less to him then.
This is one of those times when he really SHOULD be embarrassed (and his hair is gray again now) but I think that his believing that this was his best debate ever shows just how out of touch he often is about what many people think of him. I’m guessing his sycophants decided to let him believe he did well in this debate. Anyways, that’s why I said, “If tRump shows up to the next scheduled debate…” I wouldn’t bet on it either.

”Trump looked like a tired old man. She looked presidential”
Yes.
And if I could add:
“…a tired, angry, demented old man”.
Threats of serious punishment for his political opponents and media outlets who call him on his BS are showing the world who and what he really is and wants to be.

Apparently I was not the only participant in the rodeo of the debate to note that Trump alluded casually to the violation of the Logan Act he would use to stop the Ukraine War. Not that anyone would care. Since Nixon contacted Thieu during the 1968 campaign, The GOP has violated this act with impunity again and again to their political advantage.

I’m much more concerned about the media getting through to Americans, including fRump, because the world already knows who he is. As Kamala mentioned, the world is laughing at him. A great example is when he spoke at the UN and he had to stop and comment about how he had not expected to hear them laughing. But he didn’t get that they were laughing AT him, basically because of his boasting about how great he was and what a wonderful job he did.

Time somebody told him that the diplomats and heads of state laughed at him.
Kamala overpowered him. I doubt Biden would have been so aggressive. That’s how Trump wins. By overwhelming his opponent with boasts and lies; the opponent tries to correct him and is tangled in his web. Kamala went toe to toe with him. She was never defensive, never fell into the traps he set. He fell into hers.

No doubt she ” performed ” far better than the demogogue Trump but what a low bar ! I support neither . Why ? One of course is the ongoing slaughter in Gaza . Paid for by US Taxpayers. She refuses to call for a Arms embargo. And she couldn’t even bring herself to condemn the murder of the Turkish- American Human Rights observer . By a IDF sniper in the West Bank . On another issue contrary to the hysterical claims by the GOP she was a very conventional DA in SF . She won office with the support of the SF Police association because they knew she basically would give cops immunity from prosecution for crimes like killing unarmed people ! And during her tenure as DA she never did ! Likewise as CA Atty. General she ignored the pleas of families throughout Ca who wanted the Uniformed Thugs who killed their loved ones to be prosecuted under State law . I could go on and on but I will say I will vote for one of the two Anti war pro Justice Presidential candidates on the ballot here in Cs . Jill Stein of the Green Party and Claudia De La Cruz of the Peace and Freedom party

I voted for Independent Jill Stein when Obama sought re-election, because I was so disappointed by Obama’s neoliberal economic and education policies. I knew Mitt Romney put our rights at risk, so I when he lost, I was relieved and decided to rethink ever voting for an Independent again in a country where, at least in modern history, no Independent has ever been elected POTUS.
Once the info later came out about how Jill Stein had met with Putin, I realized she was really no better than major party candidates who’ve appeared to defy the Logan Act, like Reagan and tRump. So now I recommend against wasting your vote on an Independent for president –especially when there is so much at stake, as there is in the coming election, when “Dictator or Democracy is the Choice.”

Keep on hunting. I’m sure you’ll find that unicorn candidate who represents the very purest, the very bestest of your ideology.
I guess the only qualification you seek is the utter inability to actually get elected.
Still, it’s a rich ore to mine!

Actually I do believe in “
in doing something that actually matters ” ! For example in the last 11 months I have participated in multiple rallies , marches , mobilizations at City council meetings etc which have demanded a end to the US backed Mass Murders in Gaza . And I helped found “
Labor for Palestine “
here in the SF Bay Area . And re electoral politics I support candidates that agree with that . BTW. Where do you stand on the War on Gaza ?

Casting your vote for an Independent running for POTUS in this election could help tRump. And if you think Netanyahu is horrible now, just wait until tRump wins and gives him carte blanche to do whatever the hell he wants to Palestinians. That’s not because tRump has principles or even much of a conscience, but because guys who think of themselves as “strongmen” tend to stick to together. It’s also because tRump’s favorite daughter converted to Judiasim when she married Kushner, so if tRump wins, don’t be surprised if we see them both back in the WH effecting policies…

I am Jewish, was living in Israel when the Yom Kippur War broke out and I think what is happening to civilians in Gaza is horrendous. What has happened to Israeli hostages is also terrible. I believe in a two state solution, but not what Hamas is demanding, because they want a return to the 1948 borders, when Jews were not permitted in the Old City of Jerusalem where our most holy site is located, the Temple Mount.

Funny how Stan. Woods sounds a lot like the infamous radio priest Father Coughlin in 1930s and early 40s America. Coughlin professed to support the progressive FDR’s economic agenda, and supposedly was pro-peace except what he really specialized in was hatred of Jews and admiration for Hitler and Mussolini.
Harris condemns far more murderers than this person has ever done. This person is likely a Russian troll, but it makes sense he will only vote for a candidate who is approved by Putin to be a valid choice for the anti-war folks who might otherwise vote for Kamala over the insane, warmongering, fascist Trump who has given Netanyahu the green light to just wait for Trump to win because then you can whatever you want. You’ll vote for anyone who will help Trump win “except Trump” and we are supposed to believe that it’s because you don’t like Trump but really hate Kamala. People are onto you because like the other folks here who condemn Kamala, you all can’t help revealing your secret crushes on Putin.
The rest of us don’t want Trump to win. You are focused on defeating Kamala and NOT Trump, which says it all.

Wow ! Comparing me to me to the notorious Franco like Clerical fascist Father Coughlin of the 1930´s because I condemn the slaughter of tens of thousands of Palestinians, Muslims, Christians and Neither ) in the Gaza Strip and hundreds in the West Bank ! To clarify there’s nothing remotely anti Jewish about a desire for a permanent ceasefire and cutting off all Military aid to the Israeli government ( headed by the Israeli Trump Netanyahu) As a matter many of the main organizers of rallies demanding that are with Jewish Voices for Peace or Not in our name ! So I oppose both Trump and Harris for their “unwavering support ” for the IDF ! Sorry you apparently have to resort to smears in a attempt to silence dissent
