John Merrow spent many years as an investigative reporter, most recently at PBS. In the education space, he is probably best known for his multiple segments on “miracle-worker” Michelle Rhee as chancellor of the D.C. public schools, which ended with his hour-long expose of her failures.
He writes:
I spent nearly 75 years reporting for PBS, NPR, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Pravda. During that time I received three Pulitzer Prizes, 12 George Foster Peabody Awards, 17 Emmy nominations (but only nine Emmys, to my great disappointment), and three George Polk Awards.
(My editor and I have agreed that fact-checking this column wasn’t necessary.)
In 2016 I had the unprecedented honor of being knighted by Queen Elizabeth II AND receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Barack Obama. These awards were somewhat controversial because of my quite public romances over the years with Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, Farah Fawcett, Cindy Crawford, and Beyonce.
(The internet has made fact-checking irrelevant.)
But there’s no truth to the rumor that Mother Teresa and I were romantically involved. We were very good friends, that’s all.
(Fact-checking is soooo yesterday!)
In 1996 at the age of 55, I fulfilled a childhood dream: I temporarily gave up reporting and signed with The New York Yankees. That season was a dream–I batted .307, stole 36 bases, and won a Gold Glove for my defensive play in left field. Many feel that I should have won the Rookie of the Year award, but my teammate and good friend Derek Jeter was certainly a deserving winner.
(Why would anyone want to fact-check me? Don’t you trust me?)
During my time as a war correspondent when I was embedded with the Special Forces in Iraq, I saved the lives of seven Americans when I picked up and threw an unexploded IED into a ditch. It subsequently exploded, and observers said we all would have been killed but for my instinctive action. For this, I was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, the only civilian to ever have received this recognition.
(Are you thinking about fact-checking this? Maybe you should!)
OK, subtlety isn’t my strong suit, and you’ve probably figured out that I’m really writing about the absence of fact-checking during the televised debate between President Biden and former President Trump, for which both political parties and CNN agreed that there would be no live fact-checking. The result, which many of you saw, was a lie-filled 90 minutes during which Trump lied 28 or 29 times–and was never challenged!
Why am I upset? Because CNN should never have agreed to that condition. And once CNN did agree, the two reporters that CNN assigned to serve as moderators, Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, should have flat-out refused to participate. But they went ahead, giving candidate Trump license to say whatever he wanted, without fear of being challenged.
The result damaged Biden, as we all know. But for me, the process also did serious damage to CNN and to the reputations of Tapper and Bash. When I tried to make that point recently with Marty Baron, the former editor of the Washington Post and the Boston Globe, he dismissed the idea, and I imagine that many others in my (former) line of work agree with him, but I strongly believe that no reporter anywhere should ever agree to that condition.
For every journalist, fact-checking is not a choice but an obligation!
(Editor’s note: Fact-checking reveals that Merrow told at least 16 lies in the preceding paragraphs. We apologize for our failure to fact-check and will be certain to keep a closer watch on him in the future. To do so, we have subscribed to his blog, which YOU may also do by clicking the ‘subscribe’ button at the top of the page.)

What Merrow and you want are partisan left-wing journalists “fact-checking” Republican candidates, challenging them whenever they express opinions or make statements that the “journalists” disagree with. That is not the job for actual journalists. The job of the opposing candidate is to be well-prepared and able to refute any false claims made by the opponent.
There were many “fact checks” made before the June 27 debate when various Republicans and conservative pundits claimed that Joe Biden had serious cognitive impairment. Most political journalists said such claims were disinformation, even though we now know that those alleged journalists had heard stories from White House insiders about Biden’s true condition and/or had witnessed Biden’s condition with their own eyes and ears. Those alleged journalists lied by commission and omission, not revealing important information to the public because they thought such information would help Trump.
Such corruption of journalists is approved by this blog if it advances their preferred causes and candidates. Whatever it takes, by any means necessary.

My post said that journalists who are moderators should fact-check both candidates. That is fair and non-partisan. They should have done it in the first debate.

And CNN DID fact check BOTH candidates after the debate.

Nancy,
Today’s news is the US economy outpacing even the rosiest predictions.
Since you believe Biden had nothing to do with it, I assume you give all credit to Kamala Harris?
By the way, anyone who compares the speech Biden gave last night with Trump’s nonsense filled speech of an asylum inmate and still says that Biden is the candidate with cognitive deficits is simply a liar.
Biden was NOT anywhere close to being a non-functioning president and no one covered that up.
Biden was slowing down and no longer had the same energy or stamina, but Biden’s JUDGEMENT continued to be excellent.
It shocks me that after all the NYT misinformation about public schools and miraculous charter schools that anyone here takes their word that Biden was a cognitive vegetable as gospel. Or believes George Clooney over Bernie Sanders and AOC. Or believes that it is possible for a cognitive vegetable to answer “gotcha” questions from unfriendly reporters for an hour. Or believes that it is possible for a cognitive vegetable to make the speech that Biden made last night.
I choose to believe the progressives AND my own eyes, instead of the NYT and George Clooney and Republicans who say that they know for a fact that Biden’s severe cognitive vegetable-ness was “covered up”.
Biden’s slowing down made him a LESS EFFECT CAMPAIGNER. But I have every confidence that Biden will continue to be an EXCELLENT president for the next six months.
I know some people here will likely launch a personal attack and insult me for believing that Biden is clearly able to be a good president for the next 6 months because they believe I live in a fantasy world and I won’t accept their “truth” that Biden is completely out of it. But they don’t know what they are talking about.

Bernie Sanders and AOC are politicians, and like all politicians they will recite the party line. That’s what they did when speaking about Biden’s cognitive condition. As Bob Shepherd has pointed out several times, many non-politician friends of Biden were shocked by his cognitive decline – repeat, FRIENDS of Biden said this about him. If you believe with your own eyes that Biden is still cognitively sharp then I advise you to have an eye exam ASAP.

Not me. I agree with your thinking about Biden. Age slows us all down. From what I’ve read of studies, only 1 in 7 people my age, that’s only two years behind Biden, end sup suffering with some form of dementia. Trump is that one out of 7, not Biden.
And I think Biden would have done another excellent job for another four-year term.
The only reason he stepped down is because of LOUD MOUTHED ageism discrimination that appears to be rampant in the Democratic Party.
I also think Kamala Harris will make a great president, explaining why Biden selected her to be his VP. Biden wanted to make sure if something were to happen to him and she became president, someone competent would take his place.

Thank you, Lloyd.
I love how people believe Bernie Sanders and AOC are the “politicians” who would cover up Biden’s unfit cognitive state, but the conservative Dems aligned ato dump Biden were the “truth-tellers”.
Except for the Manchin types, the more respected and trustworthy Dems were behind Biden until the polls showed that the constant drumbeat of negative media (500+ NYT articles in a few weeks!) made it unlikely Biden could recover BECAUSE he is slowing down.
But not because Biden is cognitively unfit as he showed us he can still do the job and his handing the torch to Kamala in a way that prevented the conservative Dems from dumping Kamala was BRILLIANT. Thank you Joe for giving us Kamala instead of the conservative Dem the anti-Biden money wanted.

I also want to point out something the so-called liberal media is barely reporting:
Yesterday, Republican FBI Director Christopher Wray – who was appointed by Trump – was given multiple opportunities to use the same kind of “frenemy” innuendo used by Republican special prosecutor Robert Hur to disparage Biden’s failing cognitive state. Wray infuriated the Republicans by testifying truthfully under oath, and now Wray has apparently joined the White House “cover-up” of Biden’s human vegetable-ness that Bernie Sanders and AOC are supposedly part of.
(From Daily Mail coverage, but this transcript is available from multiple news sources and it is easy to watch the whole video to see how Nancy Clark and other conspiracy folks now believe the Trump-appointed Republican FBI Director Wray would lie under oath because he is part of the same conspiracy as Bernie Sanders and AOC to cover up Biden’s extreme cognitive problems.)
“At a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday, Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., veered off-topic to ask about Bide’s decline.
‘When did you notice his decline?’ Gaetz said.
‘In my interactions, in my role, all my interactions with the current president have been completely professional,’ Wray replied.
‘Right, but I mean the cognitive decline,’ the lawmaker pressed.
‘Again, I don’t meet with him very often, but what you’re describing is not something that I’ve observed during my interactions with him,’ Wray explained.
Wray described his interactions with Biden as ‘uneventful and unremarkable.’
‘It never occurred to you that this guy wasn’t up to it in all these briefings you did?’ Gaetz pushed again.
‘As I said, my briefings with the president have all been completely fine,’ Wray insisted.
‘Were they between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.?’ Gaetz wanted to know. ‘We hear those are his good hours.’
‘Times that I have briefed, I’ve included outside those hours,’ the FBI director observed.”
If anyone want to watch the video of Matt Gaetz grilling Wray, they will see Wray basically vouching for Biden, saying in an aside that Biden asked questions during meetings (before he was interrupted by Gaetz).
Wray ruined the Republican talking point that Kamala Harris knew that Biden was a human vegetable and covered it up.
Biden was never unfit to be president. He was not up to mounting a vigorous campaign. But he did, and continues to do, his job and we should all be grateful to him and stop trying to validate this false right wing attack on Biden and Kamala.
It amazes me that anyone believes the whispering gossip journalists at the NYT and George Clooney and the Dems in Congress who were so worried about Biden winning, that they allowed the so-called liberal media to turn that into them having major concerns for years because a cognitively damaged Biden had no business being president.

Serious damage to CNN and the reputations of Tapper and Bash???
What should one expect from a political theater? How long do actors last if they are unable to discharge the powers and duties of their pretend roles? Should Tapper or Bash step aside? Besides, if journalists DID run the show, why is it a shit show?

The answer to your last question lies in the beginning phrase of the question.
Because journalists run the media show, many pretending to be “neutral” when they are not. All journalists have biases whether implicit or explicit.

Real journalists, mostly reporters and their editors, do not run most of the media.
Six corporate CEOs do that and/or their publishers and editor-in-chiefs that want to keep their jobs.
Who do you think tells the Wall Street Journal’s editors what the bias is going to be and what facts to cherry pick, when they edit and revise what real reporters wrote?
The answer is Rupert Murdock.

No doubt the lack of fact checking was a huge mistake. Millions of Americans swallowed Trump’s lies like Coca-Cola.
But for me, the biggest problem with that debate was that Trump barely answered any of the questions. He would say, “ Yes, but if I could just address something he said, before…” and launch off into a diatribe about what a failure the Biden administration has been and how everything would’ve been better with him at the wheel. And by the time he was done, his time was spent.
There was no substance. No plan of action. Just verbal poison.
The next debate should correct that. If he pulls the same stunt, they turn off his microphone and say, “No, Mr Trump. You’ve both agreed to the ground work of this debate. That point has been discussed and it’s time now to move on to the next question. The American people need to know where you stand on these issues”.
Is there any way to get that idea to the people at ABC? Anyone reading this in a position of influence with that network? It’s not a partisan issue. He really shouldn’t allowed to dodge the issues in this way.
