The Florida State Education Department applauded the superintendent of schools in Broward County for taking swift and stern action when he learned that a transgender girl was allowed to play on the girls’ volleyball team at Monarch High School. The superintendent received an anonymous tip about the student and reacted by removing the principal, the assistant principal, and members of the athletic staff.
When the word got out, students staged a protest by walking out.
Following the removal of a Broward County high school principal and four employees in response to “allegations of improper student participation in sports,” Florida education officials on Tuesday said they expect “serious consequences for those responsible” and accused them of violating state law.
The comments came hours after Broward County Public School officials confirmed the reassignments of the Monarch High School employees occurred because a transgender female athlete played volleyball at the high school during the fall season and after hundreds of students staged a peaceful walkout during school hours to protest the decision. The students, who gathered on the football field and walked to the parking lot on the north end of the school, shouted, “Let her play,” “Trans rights are human rights” and “Free Cecil now,” referring to Monarch principal James Cecil, who was among the employees reassigned. Kenneth May, the assistant principal; Dione Hester, the athletic director; Jessica Norton, the girls’ volleyball coach; and Alex Burgess, a temporary athletic coach, were also reassigned.
The reassignment of the five staff members is “ridiculous,” said Alexandra Almeida, a senior at Monarch, who participated in the walkout to support her friends. She hoped the walkout, which she heard about through social media Monday, would “bring more awareness to the situation so that people see what’s happening in our Florida schools.”
Safe Schools South Florida in a statement said it is “appalled” by the district’s decision. The organization works with LGBTQ students to promote inclusivity and diversity within the education system “The reassignment of faculty is a measure typically reserved for the gravest of infractions. In this case, it is not only an overreaction but also a glaring misjudgment,” the statement read. “Furthermore, the potential inadvertent outing of a minor, who may not have publicly disclosed their transgender status, is deeply troubling.”
But state officials, in response to a Miami Herald inquiry, said department officials “instructed the district to take immediate action” upon being notified of the issue “since this is a direct violation of Florida law.” During a brief news conference Tuesday, Broward County schools Superintendent Peter Licata said officials spoke to the Florida Department of Education on Monday.
“Under Governor DeSantis, boys will never be allowed to play girls’ sports. It’s that simple,” said Cailey Myers, communications director for the state Department of Education.
There was no mention of the win-loss record of the girls’ volleyball team.

The key phrase here is: “Under Governor DeSantis,…”
DeRanged ET DeSantis 2nd term as governor ends on January 5, 2027. Before he can run again, he has to sit it out for four years. Florida has term limits unless DD’s puppet legislature changes the state Constitution so he can become Florida’s first dear leader governor dictator for life.
“Before serving as governor, DeSantis represented Florida’s 6th congressional district in the U.S. House. He was elected to three terms beginning in 2012. DeSantis resigned his U.S. House seat on September 10, 2018, during his gubernatorial campaign.[5]
“As a representative, DeSantis was a founding member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus.[6] He sponsored amendments to institute term limits for members of Congress, supported efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, and proposed limiting funding for Robert Mueller’s investigation into the 2016 Donald Trump (R) presidential campaign‘s alleged involvement with Russia related to 2016 presidential election interference.”

Joel, it is a huge mistake to think that teens were all lefties in the 1960s. In fact, the vast majority of young people during the Nixon administration SUPPORTED the War in Vietnam, and it was the folks over 65 who didn’t
The other argument that people make is that people get more conservative as they grow older. In fact, research by political scientists show that political leanings tend to remain stable THROUGHOUT THE LIFE CYCLE. So, Churchill was wrong about that.

I am curious. The vast majority of Americans, even those who support trans rights, even transgender adults l, say that biological males should not play on female teams. It is fairly clear that in most sports, there is a physical advantage. Why are activists pushing for this? It doesn’t seem like one they could win and turns people against their ultimate goal.

Mon, it’s a hard call. I agree that biological males have a physical advantage. I think the students reacted to support this kid because they know her and don’t see why she has been singled out. It seems like government should not pass blanket bans that don’t take individuals into account.

A fair point, Diane.
Of course, some conservatives are always blabbering about how they don’t want “big government” getting involved -until the day THEY want big government sticking its nose in.
One part of this story that caught my eye.. the “anonymous tip”.
All those haters who hide in the shadows… have they no shame?
Meanwhile this transgender girl had the absolute courage to make these tough decisions in the bright glare of the public eye.
Hats off also to the hundreds of students who walked out in protest.

To students reading this post and the associated comments: First, thank you for your courage and your support for folks who differ! You’re awesome!!! I cannot wait until you take over!!!!
Second, please bear in mind that there is a difference between sex, the biological inheritance, and gender, which is all the LEARNED stuff traditional associated with people of a particular sex. So, for example, there are gendered clothing, accessories, traditional work rolls, modes of walk and setting and speaking, hair styles, makeup, and so on. ALL OF THE LATTER YOU ARE FREE TO CHANGE AT WILL. You can also float from one part of the gender continuum to another.
In general, you will change more between the ages of 16 and 26 than in any other period of your life, so my suggestion is that you hold off on sex reassignment AND experiment gloriously, as you wish, with gender fluidity. People’s looking glasses into the future don’t extend very far.
Conservatives: “There’s something happening here, and you don’t know what it is, do you, Mr. Jones.” –Bob Dylan
I see this inclination to experiment with gender as a New Birth of Freedom. When Republicans talk about freedom, they mean the freedom to think and act as they do or suffer horrific consequences imposed by their government Morality Police.

I agree, I think the politicization of these issues is way overboard. But it has “jumped the shark” a long time ago. Last night my son, aged 15, declared [paraphrasing] “I used to accept all the things they told me in elementary school about gender identity. But now that I stop to think about it, a lot of it is nonsense and not facts.” I am personally very concerned about activist groups with a political agenda also creating curriculum for schools. None of this stuff is vetted through objective educators. I personally develop curriculum that gets used in schools to promote certain ideas and we should really look at the wild west of content being provided to schools. Very little of it is developed by people with an understanding of child development. Often it is heavy handed dogma in cartoon form.

From Newsweek.
Lets assume the numbers are correct for the sake of discussion.
“Of the estimated 332 million citizens living in the United States, 1.3 million adults and 300,000 youth ages 13 to 17 identify as transgender, equaling half a percent and 1.4 percent of the population respectively, according to a report published by Williams Institute, a think tank at UCLA’s Law School in 2022.
Not all transgender people identify as women, and an even smaller number consists of transgender women hoping to compete in girls’ and women’s sports.
Privacy laws make it tough to identify the exact number of transgender athletes competing in public school sports, but researcher and medical physicist Joanna Harper estimates the number can’t exceed 100 nationwide.
“While we don’t know the exact number of trans women competing in NCAA sports, I would be very surprised if there were more than 100 of them in the women’s category,” Harper told Newsweek.
One hundred transgender athletes would comprise an incredibly small number of the U.S. population, and the number dwindles even further when it comes to middle school and high school athletes.”
Besides the infinitesimally small number of Trans student athletes, how many of them excel in HS sports. Are we to believe that any male can defeat any female athlete . The hysteria is like most right wing garbage designed to rile an ignorant rabid base.

Maybe, but for the young women who are competing in middle, high school and college this is their opportunity to excel–unlike men who have more opportunities in general. Having physically stronger, larger, denser bones male athletes edge them out in rankings, seems unjust and regressive for women’s rights.

Continuing with my thought (this new wordpress format sucks).
No, the number of transgender athletes would not “dwindle” for high school athletes. It would increase. For every one NCAA athletes there are probably ten more that don’t make it at that level. So the number of transgender athletes at the high school level is far greater than what is cited.
Even though that is the case “What we should do about the issue?” is the question.

Okay there are 229,000 female NCAA athletes. That means 1 out of 2290 female student athletes who was accepted to an NCAA Sport is Trans. or 1/542 Female athletes each year is trans using that 100 metric . Hardly squeezing out Female athletes.

Diane Ravitch writes above: “Mon, it’s a hard call. I agree that biological males have a physical advantage.” I give her credit for finally applying common sense to this issue. Several months ago another commenter wrote here that biological males on average have definite physical advantages over biological females post-puberty. At that time, Ms. Ravitch wrote that such a belief was a “rush to judgment.” I concluded then that changing her mind about almost everything she used to believe was a result of tribalism, wanting to fit in completely with her new ideological soulmates. That’s often seen when people change political sides; to fit in a former liberal starts advocating for conservative positions on all issues, or a former conservative embraces all liberal dogmas.
This is not a hard call. 220 pound wrestlers aren’t allowed to compete against opponents 100 pounds lighter because of the inherent advantages that the larger wrestler has. Likewise for male/female physical competitions post-puberty.
Bob Shepherd is enraptured with the supposed brilliance of immature, impressionable teenagers over this matter. This is the same person who has noted many times on this blog the emotional instability, the immaturity of high school age humans. He correctly notes this fact, but for ideological reasons he believes that teenagers have superior wisdom regarding transgender matters. Ridiculous.
Let’s be kind to everyone regardless of sexual orientation. Let’s also use common sense and well-established scientific knowledge about physical differences between males and females. Here’s what can happen when we emote and virtue signal rather than think rationally.

I guess no one has seen (plenty of video online) or remembers the incident last year from a NC HS volleyball game where a TIM (trans identified male) spiked the ball into the face of an opposing player and sent her to the emergency room? I guess everyone forgets Lia/William Thomas setting NCAA records in the pool and taking away spaces and awards from female swimmers on the UPenn team? Or how about the male NZ weightlifter taking an Olympic spot away from a woman? I’m sorry, but biological males having gone through (or during) male puberty should NEVER be playing “competitive” sports against females…..NEVER!
Nor do I think that TIFs should be playing on male competitive sports teams during/after puberty as it changes the nature of the game…. most boys/young men will not hit/check/tackle a female. This is usually not an issue in male sports because 1) females have been provided their own sports teams and 2) TIFs have trouble making a competitive team since the young men have honed their abilities for years AND they are obviously physically stronger during/after puberty.
Recreation/mixed league sports are for male/female groupings and have rules so that females are less likely to get injured.

Sorry, I don’t pull out the “feminist” card very often because I think it too has become a bunch of hooey, but TIMs having gone through puberty playing against females in a competitive sport is WRONG. Gender is a bunch of made up mind baloney based on word salad and spaghetti logic. Biology/Anatomy are based on facts and science. Aren’t we supposed to “believe the science”?

I’m not at all ok with that. However, I do believe that the hysteria over trans athletes is manipulated for political purposes. And as DeSantis has shown, it’s the opening shot in a war against all gays. As a mother and grandmother, I would not want a female child competing in a female event with a biological male. However the occurrences are so few that they should be handled by the sporting association that makes the rules for eligibility, not the legislature that wants to harass and demonize gays.

This is pretty simple. There is no such thing as “trans.” Most of the kids being medicalized ARE gay or lesbian, so the “trans” movement is inherently homophobic. You may want to consider your position on “trans” being”gay 2.0. As mentioned above, childhood development seems only to matter if it has nothing to do with “trans” kids. If a kid declares a new identity, the immediate affirmation throws caution about adolescent decision-making skills out the window. No tattoos, no voting, no driving…but go ahead and lop off reproductive body parts?? Schools are complicit in this and I find this absolutely astounding and wrong.
Finally, even one instance of a girl being cast aside, silenced, and discriminated against by a boy with hard feelings is wrong. Title ix, especially in sports, afforded girls the chance to excel away from the biological reality that boys are bigger, stronger, and faster. Any male, no matter how he feels, needs to complete with other males. It’s not on girls to always be empathetic and stand aside for males.
I cannot believe I have to explain this to someone who should have a deep understanding of the differences between boys and girls, the reasoning for title ix, and how fairness and safety matter, especially for girls who are always at risk of male violence and abuse. Crime stats and human nature don’t lie.
Let’s stop this madness. Confused kids need exploratory therapy, not affirmation into delusion. No one can change their sex..it’s immutable.
I am a lifelong Democrat, former teacher, lesbian, tomboy, and former scholarship athlete. I’m also a mother. This trans craze is bad for all of society and the adults need to be adults again. We are failing these kids who have the Internet telling them they were born in the wrong body.

There have been multiple incidents in the last 2 years with transgirl players seriously injuring females. Volleyball and soccer to name just 2. Teen girl volleyball players in North Carolina and California have had major concussions, vision loss, and permanent injuries along with missing their senior year. These were as a result of much stronger male bodies slamming the ball into these young women’s faces. The respective school districts have not been treating this as a serious safety problem for young women. They are more concerned about offending LGBTQIA+++FASFdh! sensibilities. I hate DeSantis, but until adults get their pandering heads out from their rear end, what else is there to do? What do you suggest?
