Jo Becker and Julie Tate of The New York Times reported today that a wealthy health care executive paid for a spiffy RV that Justice Clarence Thomas purchased in Phoenix in 1999 and uses to burnish his image as a man of the people.
Justice Clarence Thomas met the recreational vehicle of his dreams in Phoenix, on a November Friday in 1999.
With some time to kill before an event that night, he headed to a dealership just west of the airport. There sat a used Prevost Le Mirage XL Marathon, eight years old and 40 feet long, with orange flames licking down the sides. In the words of one of his biographers, “he kicked the tires and climbed aboard,” then quickly negotiated a handshake deal. A few weeks later, Justice Thomas drove his new motor coach off the lot and into his everyman, up-by-the-bootstraps self-mythology.
There he is behind the wheel during a rare 2007 interview with “60 Minutes,” talking about how the steel-clad converted bus allows him to escape the “meanness that you see in Washington.” He regularly slips into his speeches his love of driving it through the American heartland — “the part we fly over.” And in a documentary financed by conservative admirers, Justice Thomas, who was born into poverty in Georgia, waxes rhapsodic about the familiarity of spending time with the regular folks he meets along the way in R.V. parks and Walmart parking lots.
“I don’t have any problem with going to Europe, but I prefer the United States, and I prefer seeing the regular parts of the United States,” he told the filmmakers, adding: “There’s something normal to me about it. I come from regular stock, and I prefer being around that….”
His Prevost Marathon cost $267,230, according to title history records obtained by The New York Times. And Justice Thomas, who in the ensuing years would tell friends how he had scrimped and saved to afford the motor coach, did not buy it on his own. In fact, the purchase was underwritten, at least in part, by Anthony Welters, a close friend who made his fortune in the health care industry.
He provided Justice Thomas with financing that experts said a bank would have been unlikely to extend — not only because Justice Thomas was already carrying a lot of debt, but because the Marathon brand’s high level of customization makes its used motor coaches difficult to value.
In an email to The Times, Mr. Welters wrote: “Here is what I can share. Twenty-five years ago, I loaned a friend money, as I have other friends and family. We’ve all been on one side or the other of that equation. He used it to buy a recreational vehicle, which is a passion of his.” Roughly nine years later, “the loan was satisfied,” Mr. Welters added. He subsequently sent The Times a photograph of the original title bearing his signature and a handwritten “lien release” date of Nov. 22, 2008.
But despite repeated requests over nearly two weeks, Mr. Welters did not answer further questions essential to understanding his arrangement with Justice Thomas.
He would not say how much he had lent Justice Thomas, how much the justice had repaid and whether any of the debt had been forgiven or otherwise discharged. He declined to provide The Times with a copy of a loan agreement — or even say if one existed. Nor would he share the basic terms of the loan, such as what, if any, interest rate had been charged or whether Justice Thomas had adhered to an agreed-upon repayment schedule. And when asked to elaborate on what he had meant when he said the loan had been “satisfied,” he did not respond.
“‘Satisfied’ doesn’t necessarily mean someone paid the loan back,” said Michael Hamersley, a tax lawyer and expert who has testified before Congress. “‘Satisfied’ could also mean the lender formally forgave the debt, or otherwise just stopped pursuing repayment.”
Justice Thomas did not respond to requests for comment.
The Supreme Court Justice is a fortunate man indeed. He grew up in poverty, but now has many very wealthy friends who are happy to pay for luxury vacations, private jet travel, his mother’s home, his nephew’s tuition, and countless other gifts. He seldom reports these gifts because why should he? The Supreme Court has no code of ethics and polices itself. It is the only part of the federal government that is above the law.

CLARENCE THOMAS WAS lynched by Biden already in his senate hearing and people keep attacking this incredibly smart black man. He grew up in a home dirt floor and no plumbing all the way up to the supreme court. Liberal justices are all squeaky clean though. Justice Jackson does not know what a women is.

Josh, are you being flippant?
Seriously, if you aren’t, why are you hanging around this site defending an alleged (with overwhelming evidence that he sold himself to more than one fascist billionaire) corrupt conservative justice sitting on the U.S. Supreme Cout?
We already know that there’s a double standard in the United States, Democrats have to be squeaky clean. Democrats can’t even be accused of a crime with no evidence to support those allegations. Once accused, if you are a Democrat, you are guilty — no need of a trial. No need of evidence or the rule of law. Just lock them up or lynch them.
While most Republicans cheat, lie, steal and attempt to turn the United States into a fascist state without a squeak of complaint from MAGA voters that make up about 6 percent of the U.S. population.

We could gain insight if Josh would explain why he wants a redo of the Great Hunger in Ireland when 1,000,000 Irish starved to death.
The economic system, then, was similar to what Charles Koch crafts today through the GOP. And, the Catholic Church which relied on the desperation of poverty- religion’s demand for no birth control- to keep the Irish from fighting back, drives Republican voting today.

Is this the same Anthony Welters?
Both of his sons went to Notre Dame. Anthony Welters established AnBryce Scholars at two schools, the private NYU and Notre Dame. The AnBryce programs, “…build networks of professional, social and alumni contacts for the scholars.”
It is a grave mistake to enable the hiding of right wing Catholic networks from the public. Employing the umbrella term, Christian nationalism, to obscure powerful political connections does not bode well.
This week, in Michigan, Matthew DePerno was charged with his part in Trump’s efforts relative to the 2020 election process. DePerno attended the Catholic Mercy College of Law in Detroit. The other person charged with DePerno was a GOP Catholic in the state legislature, Daire Rendon.
Key people in the “Big Lie” included DePerno and a self-described, “authentic Christian,” Joe Oltmann. They had a meeting in the State Dept. on Jan. 6 with people that DePerno described as State Department leaders. “The meeting came as Trump’s allies were angling for Trump to employ the vast powers of the national security establishment to seize voting machines.”
A professor at Catholic University of America (in D.C.), Robert A Destro (read his Wikipedia entry), confirmed DePerno’s meeting. Destro was in the State Department at the time as a Trump appointee. Destro’s title was Assistant Secretary of State… One of the positions that Destro held pre-Trump, was General Counsel to the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights.
Various articles describe Oltmann as meeting with right wing Catholic, John Eastman, who was on the dais with Rudy Giuliani on Jan. 6. One article wrote, “Oltmann and DePerno played an important behind-the-scene role in crafting the baseline allegations that the election was stolen from Trump.”
Other people in the same religious sect identified for their roles related to Jan. 6, include Micheal Flynn, Jeffrey Clark, and Lt. Gen. Thomas G. McInerny who in an interview said, “Christianity and Catholicism are the cornerstones of my moral beliefs.”
Part of the above info. can be found at Axios, 10-15-2021 in an article about the origin of the big lie and, at Deadline Detroit 5-17-2022.

We camp a lot. We have been in countless campgrounds across most of America. There are a lot of really nice folks in campgrounds, but most of them avoid the subject of politics. Perhaps this is what Thomas likes, people who would rather not offend him.
Campgrounds are anonymous places. Every person is a stranger. Some of the people there are not exceptional in their wealth. Others are very wealthy, by virtue of their vehicles. One of the most interesting groups are the full timers, most of whom have sold their home and decided to see the country from a campground. Another bunch can barely afford to be out, but loves to be out.
I wonder if Thomas can tell the difference?

I’ve spent a lot of time camping (in an tent) and I’m pretty sure that what Thomas does in a quarter million dollar 50 foot motor home is not camping in any sense of the word. I seriously doubt he and his wife even leave their air conditioned “coach” to walk outside.
The idea that this fellow is somehow communing with ordinary people is just absurd. If he does talk to anyone, I’m pretty sure the first thing out of his mouth is that he is a Supreme Court Justice.

I had a Scamp once (in college) but it was a car (Plymouth)
A friend and I bought it one sumner from another friend for $100 and then proceeded to drive it 6000 miles from Sslt Lake City up thru Montana into Canada, over to Vacouver and then down the entire West Coast to Mexico. We even drove through Death Valley in 120 degree heat on the way back. The car was a death trap: absolutely bald tires, barely functioning brakes and steering that was so loose that the car would jump lanes on its own — but it got us the whole way without event (miraculously)

John Roberts is just as bad as Thomas because he thumbs his nose at any sort of accountability for members of the Court. When asked by members of Congress to appear to answer their questions he refused.
He believes he and the other justices don’t answer to anyone. He’s like a king or dictator in that regard.

Mike, what’s your source? I’ve read a lot about Epstein and have never seen any reference to John Roberts as one of his associates. I googled Jeffrey Epstein and John Roberts and what popped up was a bunch of stories saying the photograph claiming to show Roberts with Epstein and Clinton was a fake.

However, there is ample evidence that Donald Trump had a social relationship with Epstein. That’s not surprising given Trump’s well-documented philandering.
Google Trump and Epstein and up pop numerous stories and photos of them together.

A “no” vote on Issue 1 in Ohio (the vote is Aug.8) is about stopping a GOP move to take away democracy.
Those campaigning for the “no” vote include the following partial listing, organizations of teachers, police, nurses, the League of Women Voters, the ACLU, Faith in Public Life, several Unitarian and Churches of Christ, a Presbyterian church, and organizations of Jews, etc.
The listing reflects an absence of affiliations to the Catholic, Methodist, Mormon, Baptist, Lutheran, etc. religious sects.

Tom Klingenstein (married to Nancy Perlman) is Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Claremont Institute and he is a multi-million dollar donor to Republicans. He funded a Clarence Thomas autobio., “Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in his own words.”
Klingenstein who views Republicans as fighting against woke communists wrote that Trump has great virtues. Klingenstein interviewed John Eastman. Eastman cited the Declaration of Independence as justifying a “need to alter or abolish the existing government.”
IMO, Klingenstein is very unwise in trusting Trump’s supporters Giuliani (his recorded anti-Semitic comments are included in materials from a new lawsuit) and John Eastman. And, if I was Klingenstein, Leonard Leo is not someone I would trust regardless of how much money I thought I could accumulate during a Republican president’s reign. My concern would be right wing Catholics and Christians who would write laws to take away the rights of Jews like they did women’s rights.
Klingenstein should read about Richard Hanania, prominent in right wing political circles that have links to Charles Koch, who is aligned with the Catholic University of America.
