Randi Weingarten, president of the AFT, campaigned across the country for candidates who support public schools and their teachers. She released the following statement:
American Voters Reject Extremism in Win for Democracy and Freedom
WASHINGTON—AFT President Randi Weingarten issued the following statement on the emerging results of the 2022 midterm elections:
“In a year when democracy, freedom, public education, public safety and economic security were on the ballot, voters overwhelmingly rejected MAGA extremism and fear.
“They stood up for who we are as a country. They stood up for democracy and against election deniers. They stood up for the right of women to make decisions about their reproductive health, and against chaos and hate.
“Our country remains deeply divided—and there were many heartbreaking losses. But voters in so many close races elected problem solvers rather than problem makers.
“When public education was on the ballot, public education mainly won. Dynamic, progressive governors who ran on a positive agenda focused on the promise and potential of public schools prevailed. Ballot initiatives in California, Massachusetts and New Mexico passed. Even in Florida, against millions spent by Ron DeSantis, levies boosting funding for schools saw widespread success.
“These results show a deep reservoir of support for public schools and for the sustained investment that parents want to help their kids thrive. And the endorsement of collective bargaining provisions in multiple states and cities comes at a time when the labor movement—including unions representing educators—maintains strong and enduring approval. AFT members—educators, healthcare workers, public employees, and retirees—campaigned relentlessly for what our kids and communities need, and those efforts made a difference.
“The final picture will emerge in the coming days. Still, one thing is already clear: Last night, Americans boldly asserted their rights and freedoms and rallied around the democratic institutions that give our country meaning and hope for the future.”

If you can, send some dollars to Warnock in Georgia, looks like a December 6th runoff to determine the control of the Senate

Randi Weingarten is just an opportunist. Negotiated the worst contract possible in the UFT for 2005. Supports Mulgrew in his attempt to place retirees against their will into a Medicare Advantage plan and out of traditional Medicare. A total disaster.

24-45% raise??? Laughable. Every veteran teacher I know wound up in a “rubber” room or became a “teacher in the reserve pool”. The raises were on paper while Bloomberg/Klein did their best to demonize veteran teachers helped by Weingarten under the contract that ended seniority transfer rights. Goal was to ultimately force them to quit or possibly even get fired.

Unfortunately Fl. is still a red state. Most the Democrats won in PBC! Boward voters stayed home ! The Congresswomen of PBC and Boward won re-election! The school funding passed but not canceling out the Constitutional Convention! Federman won along with Shapiro in Pa. Annette Tadeo lost! Rubio who is vs any social program won. Push to make Val Demings head of our state party! Teachers still underpaid!

Another bright spot in Tuesday’s elections was that Michigan is no longer controlled by the GOP. I am hoping to see the DeVos-funded assault on public education shrink to the point where it can “drowned in the bathtub,” to paraphrase a favorite GOP talking point.

Eleanor, thank you for that wonderful news! What is the composition of the legislature?

Ironically, what remains of the UFT since Weingarten’s reign bears no resemblance to democracy. UFT blindly endorses all Democrats without even bothering to pretend to poll its members, generally to everyone’s detriment.

Totally agree. She and her even worse replacement (Mulgrew) have thoroughly destroyed the UFT.

Thanks- in a perfect world, Musk and Zuck wouldn’t own social media.
Digressing- Reed wouldn’t own Netflix and Gates wouldn’t have become a villainthropist on the profits of Microsoft. Eric Schmidt wouldn’t have started the stink tank, New America, with Google money. Bezos and Walton heirs wouldn’t exploit workers at Amazon and Walmart, respectively. John Arnold wouldn’t have Enron money for pension attacks. Pete Peterson wouldn’t attack Social Security. NFL owners would be better people.

Years ago, before I left the dark side, I was writing a regular column in Dorbes. I proposed that no own should be allowed to have as much as $1 billion. Apparently the reaction from readers was so outraged that it was my last column.

Diane,
Sorry you lost your column. You did the right thing. The latter is always the better choice.

Not in every state. For example, NPE endorsed candidate Emily Hubbard won in St Louis. Haven’t gotten to library yet to read piece in New Yorker about the anti CRT candidates nationwide that won.
