I am afraid that this is a problem that only the Russian people can solve with the chance of limited bloodshed. Putin appears to be consumed by his own fantasy of Russian grandeur. Unfortunately, that vision does not see the need for equal participation in it by those he seeks to include. We need to do a much better job of spotting potential megalomania well before it is staring us in the face.

And this just in: Vladimir Putin appoints Dr. Evil head of all Russian forces in Ukraine.

Putin is currently (10/9/22) arresting high-level members of his own military. This could be simply his anger at the fact that he is losing in Ukraine, or it could be that he is attempting to counter a long-overdue coup. At any rate, this is a REALLY bad sign for the would-be Tsar of the New Greater Russia. He is sending quite clearly the message that no matter how long or how loyal your service, you aren’t safe from a snake like Putin. That’s true, ofc, of all slimy little Fascists.
