In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court refused to overturn a vaccine mandate in Maine that does not allow religious exemptions.
Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Neil Gorsuch voted in the minority, contending that Maine’s failure to offer a religious exemption was based on religious bias.
In two previous cases, from anti-vaxxers at Indiana University and public school teachers in New York, the Supreme Court also upheld vaccine mandates. This suggests that the high court recognizes that public health in a global pandemic requires a strong governmental response to stop the spread of the disease and protect the public.
It also appears that lawsuits filed by police unions, firefighters’ unions, and other government employees are unlikely to succeed.
All of this is very good news for the vast majority of the public, which has been vaccinated and frankly doesn’t understand resistance to vaccine mandates.

I guess that shuts down the rest of the suits.

If we could only shutdown “the rest of the suits”!
I can dream can’t I?

That is good news.
A concern in Maine is that 4-5 months of the year there is a massive influx of out of state tourists. 75% vaccination rate sounds good. But when 1/2 the people in the grocery store with you are unmasked and from out of state…. it’s concerning.

A year ago, in spite of the rampant attacks of the Delta Variant across the country SCOTUS ignored the pandemic and overturned limitations of attendance at religious observance in NY and CA, Justice Sotomayer disented vigorously …. a year later … the court is nervous about public opinion …. I blogged here https://mets2006.wordpress.com/2021/10/18/should-religious-exemptions-be-available-for-the-covid-vaccine-will-scotus-intervene-in-determining-religious-exemptions/

If the SCOTUS continued giving waivers to religious groups, only they would get the COVID.

In other news, Brazil’s Senate has voted to ask the Prosecutor General to charge Jair Bolsonaro with Crimes against Humanity (and other crimes) for following the lead of the Orange Idiot, IQ45, with the consequence that 607,000 Brazilians are dead. HE FOLLOWED TRUMP’S LEAD. But here, there is nothing to be done about the criminal malfeasance of Glorious Leader Trump? He gets to golf and crash weddings and play kingmaker to his Party and Rightful President in Exile to his moronic base? Aie yie yie.
