The University of Virginia adopted a vaccination mandate. Of its 27,000 students, 238 students were “disenrolled” because they didn’t get vaccinated. About 96.6% are vaccinated. A small number of students (1.3%) received medical or religious exemptions and are required to wear a mask and get tested regularly.
A university spokesman said:
“If you’re unvaccinated, we ask that you wear a mask at all times — indoors or outdoors — whenever you’re around people,” said Coy. “Anyone unvaccinated and has an exemption will have to test once a week, we’re starting once a week: That might go up.”

Good for UVA. Hopefully other universities and college will follow their lead.

At the small Catholic university where I teach in Los Angeles, all students, faculty, and staff must be vaccinated. There are exemptions for medical and religious reasons, but I saw the application for religious exemption, and it asks for specific answers about the nature of the religious issue, as well as proof that one is a sincere practitioner of said religion. An interview is required as well. Furthermore, we must complete an online health screen every day before arriving on campus, and show our result upon entering campus. And, everyone must wear masks indoors. We are offering in-person, virtual, and hybrid/hyflex classes (professors’ choice).

The Court of Appeals Indiana University decision was strong, if you don’t want to get vaccinated, go check to another school

And Justice Amy Coney Barrett refused to hear an appeal from anti-vaxxers about Indiana University’s policy. That suggests that the Supreme Court will not support similar appeals.

The Battle Against Reality and Science Intensifies, eh!
It is a well documented fact that those vaccinated can spread Covid Delta variant as do the unvaccinated both indoors and outdoors. Without a total mask mandate (screw those sky-daddy exemptions) the university is just pissing in the wind.

Duane,
Outdoor transmission is possible and if I were in a crowded place for a significant amount of time with a large group of people I would probably wear a mask even outside. Walking across campus and passing people on the sidewalk is an extremely small risk compared to say the risk of being struck by an automobile, bicycle, or skateboard.

“History will look upon this pandemic as an intelligence test.”
And the low scorers will celebrate and call it a badge of honor. Alas, the sheep are always with us. (Apologies to the other sheep that bear wool.)

Tragically a lot of low scorers won’t be calling it anything from six feet under.

A religious exemption for mask wearing?
Seriously?
I have heard of religious sects that require masks, but not of any that oppose them – except if one considers a condom a “mask”, but that would seem to be a stretch.
Sounds like a very recent phenomenon to me, in just the last year and a half, maybe?

I belong to the “The Church of the Barefaced” and therefore request an exemption from mask wearing.
