Last April, I published an excerpt from an essay that Andrea Gabor had written for a forthcoming book. The book is a collection of essays titled Media Capture: How Money, Digital Platforms and Governments Control the News. The book editor is Anya Schiffrin. The publisher is Columbia University Press. Gabor’s chapter is titled “Media Capture and the Corporate Education-Reform Philanthropies.”
You will enjoy her chapter.

Awesome, Ms. Gabor!

But yet you all think outlets like NYT, WaPo, etc. are more trustworthy than independent or foreign news. Hmmm…..
WaPo, incidentally, is owned by a CIA contractor.

The validity of news outlets and what they write or say is measured by the ability to corroborate and by the objectivity of their presentation.
On occasion, people in legitimate news make mistakes and they publicly correct them e.g. Dan Rather. On occasion, legitimate news organizations hire rogue players with agendas unrelated to journalism. When it’s exposed, their employers pay a high price e.g. The Hill and its employee, Solomon. In an educated populace, media readers and listeners make judgements about skewed selectivity in reporting. Fox fails as a news site in all 3 of the above areas. And, RT does as well.
BTW- Intercept’s article about Michael Flynn today answers a question about the purpose of QAnon in terms of opportunity for profit. The article’s 3 final paragraphs focus on a firm linked to a Neo-nazi group.
The journalist who wrote the article provided the details necessary to ascertain the authenticity of the content that supported the linked conclusions.

Who is “you all” ? I read more than the WaPo (I don’t really read the NYT unless an article is recommended).
What independent or foreign news sources are you recommending other’s read? Maybe some of us already do.

Well, there she (dee-seventy-seven) goes again, falsely generalizing about the folks who make comments here. “You all?” The very smart people who come here to comment are diverse and they certainly have made serious criticisms about the media from A to Z, especially when it comes to education. We all are skeptical of all the media, from the main stream media to the independent media and everything in-between.

I meant to say that we read the various media outlets with a skeptical eye and a show-me attitude. Show me the facts and the supporting evidence with links to prove your point or premise. We don’t just slavishly accept what’s written in an article or op-ed on faith alone. I read many sources not just the main stream media.
