The Washington Post fact-checkers have kept a meticulous record of Donald Trump’s lies, and there were so many of them that it became a nearly full-time job. Every time he spoke at a rally, the lies came tumbling out. Trump made more than 30,000 false or misleading statements, nearly half of them in his last year in office. The biggest lie, of course, was his claim that he won the election, which was denied to him because of massive voter fraud. His lawyers never produced evidence of voter fraud in any court, and they lost 60 court cases, appearing before judges appointed by both Republicans and Democrats. The U.S. Supreme Court twice refused to accept the Trump campaign’s claims of voter fraud; not even the three Justices appointed by Trump–Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett– supported his claims. It is easy to claim “fraud” on television, but actual courts expect evidence, and Trump’s lawyers never had any evidence.
Glenn Kessler, the lead fact-checker, wrote about Trump’s lies:
He overstated the “carnage” he was inheriting, then later exaggerated his “massive” crowd and claimed, despite clear evidence to the contrary, that it had not rained during his address. He repeated the rain claim the next day, along with the fabricated notion that he held the “all-time record” for appearing on the cover of Time magazine.
And so it went, day after day, week after week, claim after claim, from the most mundane of topics to the most pressing issues.
Over time, Trump unleashed his falsehoods with increasing frequency and ferocity, often by the scores in a single campaign speech or tweetstorm. What began as a relative trickle of misrepresentations, including 10 on his first day and five on the second, built into a torrent through Trump’s final days as he frenetically spread wild theories that the coronavirus pandemic would disappear “like a miracle” and that the presidential election had been stolen — the claim that inspired Trump supporters to attack Congress on Jan. 6 and prompted his second impeachment.
The final tally of Trump’s presidency: 30,573 false or misleading claims — with nearly half coming in his final year.
Read and search the full database of Trump’s false or misleading claims
For more than 10 years, The Fact Checker has assessed the accuracy of claims made by politicians in both parties, and that practice will continue. But Trump, with his unusually flagrant disregard for facts, posed a new challenge, as so many of his claims did not merit full-fledged fact checks. What started as a weekly feature — “What Trump got wrong on Twitter this week” — turned into a project for Trump’s first 100 days. Then, in response to reader requests, the Trump database was maintained for four years, despite the increasing burden of keeping it up.
The database became an untruth tracker for the ages, widely cited around the world as a measuring stick of Trump’s presidency — and as of noon Wednesday it was officially retired…
An assessment of the Fact Checker database shows the dramatic escalation in the rate of Trump’s dishonesty over time. Trump averaged about six claims a day in his first year as president, 16 claims day in his second year, 22 claims day in his third year — and 39 claims a day in his final year. Put another way, it took him 27 months to reach 10,000 claims and another 14 months to reach 20,000. He then exceeded the 30,000 mark less than five months later.
Scroll a visual timeline of the false claims Trump made during his time in office
Trump made false claims about just about everything, big and small, so the Fact Checker database provides a window into his obsessions (and the news cycle) at the time. When he felt under siege or in trouble, he responded by trying to craft an alternative reality for his supporters — and to viciously attack his foes. Nearly half of the false claims were communicated at his campaign rallies or via his now-suspended Twitter account...
After his election defeat, Trump spoke or tweeted about little except to offer lies about a stolen election, even as he or his supporters lost more than 60 court cases as judges repeatedly rejected his claims as bogus. After Nov. 3, he made more than 800 false or misleading claims about election fraud, including 76 times offering some variation of “rigged election.”
At his Jan. 6 speech at the Ellipse, in which he incited the attack on the Capitol, Trump made 107 false or misleading claims, almost all about the election.
The aftermath of what Biden and other Democrats now call the “big lie” hovers over Washington as both parties figure out whether there can be a return to a shared set of facts undergirding national debate, or whether one of the major political parties will remain captive to the sorts of conspiracy theories that marked so many of Trump’s final year of claims.
Our democracy is in deep trouble when we can’t agree on basic facts about the world around us.
Newsflash for those just now coming out of a coma: we inaugurated a new president on January 20. Said new president promptly reneged on his promise to get $2,000 checks out “immediately. Now he’s mumbling something about $1,400 by March or April. Said president also said that he had a plan for tackling COVID, but has now admitted that “there’s nothing we can do to change the trajectory of the pandemic for the next several months.”
Is anyone fact-checking this new president, or are we just going to spend the next four years stuck on “But Trump!”?
The House isn’t in session until Feb. 1 and $1400 + $600= $2,000
Could Congress vote on a new stimulus check as soon as Feb. 1?
The House of Representatives won’t be in session again until Feb. 1, but the plan is to bring a bill to the floor shortly after.
“We will be doing our committee work all next week so that we are completely ready to go to the floor when we come back,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday in a press conference.
Sanders says Democrats will pass relief package through reconciliation
Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., said that Democrats will pass a relief package “as soon as we possibly can” through budget reconciliation rather than full legislation.
Budget reconciliation is a form of legislation that specifically governs changes to government spending, revenue and the federal debt limit. While it is limited in the scope of what policies it can include, reconciliation bills are immune to the 60-vote filibuster in the Senate, meaning only 51 Democrats would have to sign on to pass the legislation.
“I don’t know what the word compromise means,” Sanders said of calls by Republicans to work together on a bipartisan package in the upper chamber. “I know that there are more working families today living in economic desperation than at any time since the Great Depression.”
“What we cannot do is wait weeks and weeks and months and months to go forward,” Sanders said of the need for immediate coronavirus relief.
As the incoming chair of the Senate Budget Committee, Sanders will have a critical role in determining federal spending allotments and priorities in the incoming Congress. A coronavirus stimulus package proposed through budget reconciliation would give the first signs of how Sanders will use the new role.
President Joe Biden has proposed a $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package that would provide greater stimulus to state and local governments, small businesses, and help build a more robust vaccine rollout infrastructure, among other big list items.
The proposal has been criticized by many Republicans and some Democrats for being too big and not sufficiently targeted.
From USA Today.
And never mind that Biden has worked on food relief, rent/eviction, climate issues, student loan issues, Covid issues (lack of vaccine) etc. Yep, he’s been a real slouch in his 4 1/2 days if office!!!SMH. You just want your $2000….last week. Get a grip and move on d77….your hate and bitterness are becoming your worst enemy.
Newsflash for our resident Trump enabler/apologist:
Biden and the democrats already sent every American a check for $10,000 in COVID relief on Friday. Yes they did, and if our resident Trump enabler is denying that is true, she is lying. Everyone already received their $10,000 checks on Saturday. And also received their Medicare for All insurance cards. If you say that it didn’t happen, you should be locked up.
I am posting this “lie” to help our resident Trump apologist who opposed impeachment and said the Mueller Report was a nothing burger understand the difference between the false reality lies presented by Trump, and Biden not enacting all legislation he campaigned for in the first 3 days.
It seems that the only way to make this person understand why we opposed Trump so much, and why her normalizing of Trump’s lies is so dangerous is to give her a real taste of what her life would be like if the democrats really acted like Trump and the Republicans as she believes.
Maybe by answering all of her criticisms of Biden with what she condoned when Trump did it – presenting a false reality that has no evidence except “we said it’s true” to support it – she might finally admit that there is a difference between lies and presenting a false reality — which allows NO debate or conversation – and delayed or broken campaign promises.
Ah, your hatred for Biden knows no bounds.
Sad.
Marjorie Taylor Greene, the QAnon member of Congress from Georgia has already introduced articles of impeachment for Biden. You agree?
dienne77 From what I can tell from your note, the only problem with Biden is that he didn’t understand that some of us don’t understand how the process of government works and that, with that understanding, we already know what he means by “immediately,” and that he cannot just sit down and “immediately” write a bunch of checks.
SNARK ALERT: Maybe you could change your handle to “looking for trouble where there isn’t any.” CBK

He repeated the rain claim the next day, along with the fabricated notion that he held the “all-time record” for appearing on the cover of Time magazine.
TIME:
TIME has a long history of featuring presidents on the cover and Trump, whose presidency defied precedents and fractured norms, has been no exception. Eight of the top 10 people to appear most often on TIME’s cover are U.S. presidents. Trump finishes his term with 35 TIME covers, the fourth most of any president behind Richard Nixon’s 55 covers, Ronald Reagan with 46 and Bill Clinton with 40. Rounding out the top 10 are Barack Obama with 31, George W. Bush (30), Jimmy Carter (27), Jesus (22), and Hillary Clinton and George H.W. Bush tied at 21.
TIME has featured a lot of nitwits on their covers over the years, including Michelle Rhee and her broom.
It means nothing.
SomeDAM Poet: I disagree. [I’m a subscriber to TIME.] A lot of the magazine covers were strong political comments about him, and they were NOT complementary. Some are artist’s drawings. I liked the one showing Trump in “Total Meltdown”. Or three separate heads on different cords labeled “The Wrecking Crew”. There were a series of four paintings from O’Brien depicting Trump in a growing storm within the Oval Office.

One of my favorite teevee moments of the year is from 2:40-3:31 of this video:
Perhaps Washington Post should now develop a fact check for statements about education, lest their owner become a driving force behind privatization. See the other article. Pointing out falsehood on this website does not have the same effect as pointing it out in the NYT or WAPO.
Washington Post will no longer fact check themselves, which is what they would have to do to fact check statements about education.
It’s no accident that the Post eliminated their Ombudsman, whose job it was to do just that: check facts made by Post journalists and editors.
Trump was a big, fat permission slip for the Replutocrat Party to come out and do what many of them had already been doing, but on a far larger and more coordinated scale. Now, the unmistakable governing philosophy of the Replutocrats is to lie about everything all the time. Their goal is to destroy, within the American people, the very idea of objective truth itself such that their pursuit of power and control becomes the only “truth” that matters.
The Senate will need to build a woodshed next door, so that impeachment cases that fail in conviction will, at least result in an old fashioned trip to the woodshed.
DJT = 🤥🤥👖/🔥

His legacy of the war on truth is in my opinion the worst of the MANY problems that Biden will face. It is unbelievable what people now believe.
The 1st Amendment says, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
The words “freedom to lie” are not mentioned in the 1st amendment. There is also no language that mentions it is okay to spread conspiracy theories without any evidence.
Congress could pass legislation defining what “freedom of speech” means and that legislation could ban lies and conspiracy theories.
If Congress can’t do that, how about the states and/or private corporations like the traditional media and social media (Twitter, Facebook, et al). The 1st Amendment doesn’t say anything about the states putting limits on freedom of speech. It only says Congress can not pass that legislation …
Why can’t Congress pass legislation that makes the news media and social media responsible to ban lies and conspiracy theories?
Not only is that dumpster a big, fat LIAR, he’s PETTY.

The Bidens were reportedly left waiting outside the White House on Inauguration Day because Trump sent the staff home
Trump is disgusting to the MAX.
Opps. Sorry, I just repeated an article that you sent.
Trump really is an unspeakable no-good. He can’t even be a bit gracious.
Dr. Birx was just on CNN talking about serving the Trump administration. She said when she submitted graphics on Covid spread to Trump, someone would change the graphs before they were presented to the public. The right wing is so afraid of the truth. They simply want to control people and what they believe.
Trump also recently said he wants to start a “Patriots’ Party.” This would be great news as it would further divide the right wing. It would be a windfall for the Democrats.
That someone was likely Jared Kushner. Dr. Birx was often seen in his company delivering information. Jared is probably the most evil of all of them and he had trump’s ear because he was married to “the Princess”.
Birx served Trump well.
And now she is serving herself.
She served him well
And now herself
As all can tell
It’s selfish help
It will be a wonderful day when we stop talking about Trump. Let’s make that happen sooner rather than later.
It won’t be a wonderful day if we forget about Trump instead of remembering him and condemning him. We don’t want a repeat. This country needs a public reckoning, not to stop talking about Trump. We understood this after WW 2. Saying “never again” means to confront the past, not just stop talking about it.
The public reckoning will never end.
Willfully ignoring a problem and its history leads to a dangerous type of amnesia. I’m currently reading a biography of Joe McCarthy that seems as current today as in the late 40s and 50s; history repeating. Perhaps if we remembered those experiences and learned from them, we wouldn’t be lulled into repeating them over and over again. The day we stop talking about the Idiot, holding him accountable, and the consequences of his and his cult’s actions is the day we start the next era of catastrophic intolerance.
I get the point. But Trump is completely neutered right now, apparently with no strategy for how to make himself the center of attention again. An impeachment proceeding would do just that.
I have no answers, I just want to be rid of the guy, now more than ever.
Flerp….He may be neutered right now, but his kids aren’t and they have intentions of running for office. Sorry, I want him gone too, but if he is not impeached and has no consequences for his actions, he and his evil spawn will be at it again soon enough. Gerald Ford was a 1 term POTUS….. because he pardoned Nixon. Dems can’t afford to sit on their laurels and let trump get away with murder…yes, murder….6 people died because of the events of Jan 6th.
He has been impeached. Twice. We’ll have a second Senate trial now. I’d love if he were convicted, but he won’t be.
He will be convicted if Mitch wants to free the GOP from his control and clear the way for others to run in 2024.
And if he’s not convicted, history will show who let him off the hook….and THAT matters! At least Richard Nixon had the decency to go quietly and let the country heal. Trump will get bored soon enough and need to feed his ego. Sometimes it’s really hard to do the right thing…..but this matters. The children are watching and listening and learning.
Greg,
I agree with you.
Trump has been out of office one week, and some would prefer never to think of him again. That’s a huge mistake. He tried to roll back not just what Obama did, but what LBJ did. Given a second term, he would have taken us back to the 1920s. He brought the darkest forces of white supremacy into the mainstream. He didn’t create them but he embraced them. We should not forget history. We should think about how to revive democracy and about the roots of hatred, racism, and fear of the Other. Unless you were one of his devotees, the last four years were a nightmare. We can’t forget about it or him. We came within minutes of a massacre at the U.S. Capitol. We better figure out why these things are happening, not pretend we can wipe the slate clean and forget about these four frightening years.
“We came within minutes of a massacre at the U.S. Capitol.”
This is not hyperbole. If Eugene Goodman had not acted quickly–I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched the video where he looks left down the Senate corridor and instinctively drew the mob to the right, it was one of the most consequential acts in American history–we literally would have had senators, potentially members of Congress and the vice president at best paraded through a murderous mob, and at worst, actually murdered.
Think about it. And then think about it again. More importantly, never forget this realistic scenario. We were quite literally 60-120 seconds from having this actually happen. As tragically as our national standing has been wounded, had this episode actually happened, our national standing would quite literally have died. We would have lost, forever, our potential to impact world events. What make this even weirder, our allies would have regretted this more than 70+ million Americans.
It’s hard to get any lower than Trump.

The Bidens were reportedly left waiting outside the White House on Inauguration Day because Trump sent the staff home
Joe and Jill Biden may have been waiting to enter the White House for longer than necessary on Inauguration Day because there was a lack of staff there to greet them.
In a break from White House protocol, the new President and First Lady were left standing in front of closed doors as they took photos outside of their new residence for the first time on Wednesday.
The Trumps “sent the butlers home when they left so there would be no-one to help the Bidens when they arrived,” a well-placed official not associated with the Biden administration told The National Journal.
Chief usher Timothy Harleth was also fired by the Trumps before they left on Wednesday morning, the publication reports. White House press secretary Jen Psak later confirmed that Harleth’s exit occurred “before we walked in the door.”…

Maybe Mr. Harleth will get his job back?
Harleth worked in the Idiot’s organization. He’ll likely go back to work at the hotel a few blocks from the White House. Shed no tears for him.
Shed no tears for this fellow.

Two months after the White House fired the first female White House Chief Usher, Angella Reid, First Lady Melania Trump announced the new chief usher would be Timothy Harleth, a former Trump International Hotel employee.
Harleth, the director of rooms at the Trump International in Washington, was selected on Friday by the first lady to oversee more than 90 staff members in the White House.
“I am so pleased Timothy will be joining our team,” Trump said in a statement. “He was selected because of his impressive work history and management skills. My husband and I know he will be successful in this vital role within the White House.”
A reaction from Harleth was provided in the press release about the selection and his willingness to accept the position.
Got it!
I’d like to see Trump on the cover of Time with the headline, “Bye Felecia”.
Or perhaps “Bye Propecia”…..

New Administration Brings Out Hope for Unity
The staff of Franciscan Action Network watched last week’s inauguration with the hope that the words of unity from President Biden would come to fruition.
In a statement released that afternoon, we offered “our faith and the Franciscan tradition of peace to illuminate a path toward that unity – in service to those most vulnerable among us.” In his first hours, President Biden signed 17 executive orders, memorandums and proclamations, many of which directly affected policies which we have worked on for years. Issues such as the environment, immigration, economic recovery, and restoring efforts to promote diversity align with FAN’s mission to promote equity and human dignity. We look forward to working with the new administration on these topics. So, we “…begin again, brothers [and sisters], for up until now, we have done little or nothing.” – St. Francis of Assisi
Trump can spend his time thinking about how great he is. If the far R media had reported the truth instead of many versions of alternative facts, nobody would want this cretin in office.

Vote: Is Trump’s Twitter Ban A Threat To Democracy and the 1st Amendment? From DC daily cable
President Biden’s inauguration ended the presidency of Donald J. Trump, but Trump’s influence arguably slipped away once he lost access to mainstream social media platforms. Many of Trump’s supporters have decried it as a violation of his constitutionally-guaranteed freedom of speech.
Do You Think Trump’s Twitter Ban Is A Threat To Democracy and The 1st Amendment?
The Results Are IN!
YES 36%… 281 votes
NO 52%…405 votes
UNSURE 10%…83 votes
I think Schumer’s quote is justified. No president should be above the law…especially the Orange Liar-in-Chief who inspired an insurrection against our Capitol building.

Joe Biden Says Trump’s Impeachment Trial In Senate ‘Has To Happen’
The president told CNN, however, that he doesn’t think enough Republican senators will vote to convict Donald Trump.
President Joe Biden thinks that former President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial in the Senate “has to happen.”
On Monday, Biden told CNN that despite how a Senate trial could affect the confirmation of his Cabinet nominees and other items on his agenda, he thought that there would be “a worse effect if it didn’t happen.”
Biden expressed doubt, however, about whether enough Republican senators would actually vote to convict Trump, saying it might be different if Trump were still in office, according to CNN.
Republicans have been arguing against having a trial altogether, saying that it’s too late to convict Trump since he is no longer in office.
On Monday, members of the House formally delivered articles of impeachment to their fellow lawmakers in the Senate, officially kicking off the Senate’s impeachment process. The trial in the Senate is set to begin on Feb. 9…
On Monday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) gave a rebuttal to his Republican colleagues, noting that ignoring Trump’s impeachment would set a dangerous precedent.
“The theory that the Senate can’t try former officials would amount to a constitutional get-out-of-jail-free card for any president who commits an impeachable offense,” Schumer said.

I am astounded by how quickly Biden is working to undo the damage that Trump put on this country. He knows the system and isn’t fooling around. Congress must step in and help make important changes a law.
I can already see the squawking some far R media will pull on this act.

President Joe Biden Is Halting Deportations for 100 Days, a Respite For Many Undocumented Immigrants
…Most deportations will be halted for 100 days beginning on Friday, one of several steps the Biden Administration is taking to reevaluate immigration enforcement strategy and undo the hardline policies and rules set by the government of Donald Trump. Immigration advocates and lawyers say that for the millions of undocumented immigrants who live in the U.S., 100 days without deportations is a welcome respite after four years of a harsher Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) strategy, including arresting and deporting undocumented people who weren’t targets, but happened to be in the vicinity when ICE conducted a raid. ICE dubbed the people caught up in this policy “collaterals” or “non-targets.”
“There is a sense of relief for a lot of our community—for 100 days,” Medina, a community organizer with the Colorado People’s Alliance, tells TIME with a laugh. “It’s a great first step. It will allow our people to fight their deportation cases and to have a chance to stay in the U.S.”
The 100-day halt on deportations—which is intended to give the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) time to steer its “limited resources” toward border security and other priorities such as reassessing asylum procedures according to a memorandum issued Jan. 20 by DHS acting secretary David Pekoske—applies to those who arrived in the U.S. prior to Nov. 1, 2020. Anyone who arrived after that date or is deemed a threat to national security or considered to be a threat to public safety will still be subject to deportation. Though the memo does not clarify why the Administration chose the Nov. 1, 2020 cutoff date, Kari Hong, associate professor of law at Boston College Law School, tells TIME she believes the date was chosen to ensure those who are exempt from deportation are people who have been in the U.S. for a long period of time. “[The date] definitely indicates that people who were impacted by the prior administration’s policies will be protected in this time period,” she says…

carolmalaysia Many of Trump’s policy changes were executive orders . . . all he needed to do was sign . . . he did not do the further work of codifying them through Congress. . . . <–typical dictator stuff. And as you say, if anyone is aware of such things, it’s Biden; and my guess is that he’ll do the background work for codification, at least where it’s appropriate to do so.
But it always bothered me how a president . . . ANY president . . . can arbitrarily back out of commitments that we as a nation to international bodies and other nations, made through a prior president. It seems to me that doing so makes us look like a bunch of fickle jerks. CBK
