A friend shared this 15-minute video with me.
It is the story of a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army who was captured with his men in World War II.
Their captors wanted to separate the Jewish troops, but this brave man would not let it happen.
We are reminded of the goodness and courage that exists in the world.
We need that reminder now.
Thank you. This is a welcome contrast to the West Point speech from Trump today.
Thank you for this inspiring story. Master Sargeant Roddie Edmonds defended his Jewish soldiers against the Nazis. Their religion didn’t matter. They were all part of the same American fighting brotherhood.
“We are all Jews here.”
My heart!!!! Thanks for sharing this. Beautiful, indeed!!!
“That such people exist, gives you hope for humanity.” Yes. Thank you Diane. You are one of those people that give us hope (and truthful information).
Well, that was 15 minutes well spent. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for sharing this Diane. Such a powerful story. In tears as a write this.
Cadet Bone Spurs followed in his father’s footsteps and he learned that to survive you make sure everyone else loses. Trump would have volunteered to shoot all the American Jews in that camp.
There is a wonderful and inspiring story for sure. The irony in the story is that the European Fascists preached the glory of war because it elevated man to great things. The war they created did in fact inspire heroism. Just not the way they thought.
Video: Don’t Worry Be Happy | Playing For Change | Song Around The World
Nov 3, 2014
The Bobby McFerrin classic song “Don’t Worry Be Happy” performed by kids around the world in this entertaining music video. Music is truly the language that is spoken around the world. The Playing For Change Foundation partnered with Okaidi, a children’s clothing line based in France, to launch a music program in Bangladesh. Now over 500 children will receive free music lessons each week as part of their weekly school activities.
It is so important to remember, cite and learn from history, as this film confirms. When I taught high school government, oh so long ago, the one lesson I hoped to my students would remember for the rest of their lives was the most obvious sign of a fascist, totalitarian, authoritarian government was the erasure or manipulation of history. They used to love the examples of Stalinist airbrushing of pictures, comparing them to the originals. For my final exam essay, I had them comment on the first page of Milan Kundera’s The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, which can be read here by clicking the “Look Inside” feature on the picture of the cover.
In today’s NYRB, Irish writer Finian O’Toole writes an incisive essay about our national tragedy and how the White House is trying to rewrite and deform history. “A central feature of Trump’s practice of malign minimalism is the erasure of American history.” He would have received an A+ from me were he in my class. Give it a read.
