The Southern Poverty Law Center reports on the status of Confederate monuments and symbols.
This subject may not be uppermost on your mind in the midst of the pandemic, but it remains a sore subject in the South, where most of these memorials are located. They are an affront to African American citizens and to anyone else who recognizes the injustices of the antebellum South and the continuing racism of the present.

The website is really worth exploring. You will see the varieries of hate that SPLC keeps reports on, where they are located and the beliefs that sustain them. I looked for their “2020 Trump” research. If you are savvy about which states are crucial for Trump’s election, you can also discern which hate groups are in those states and whether their views have any uptake in Trump’s campaigns. Thanks for this update on the public monument issue.

I agree. They provide a great public service. They were so helpful in the anti-David Duke efforts in the late 80s/early 90s.
As for Virginia’s statues, I would hope that Northam and legislators would authorize a so-called confederacy monument museum in Richmond, the site of its former capital. A good model would be the museum in Bergen-Belsen, which is a curated treasure trove of information about hate. These monuments should not be destroyed or hidden in warehouses; they should be a testament to an ongoing struggle.
