One reason that the U.S. was unprepared for the pandemic is that we were shipping medical supplies to a China even though government officials had been warned that the disease was likely to reach our country.
U.S. manufacturers shipped millions of dollars of face masks and other protective medical equipment to China in January and February with encouragement from the federal government, a Washington Post review of economic data and internal government documents has found. The move underscores the Trump administration’s failure to recognize and prepare for the growing pandemic threat.
In those two months, the value of protective masks and related items exported from the United States to China grew more than 1,000 percent compared with the same time last year — from $1.4 million to about $17.6 million, according to a Post analysis of customs categories which, according to research by Public Citizen, contain key PPE. Similarly, shipments of ventilators and protective garments jumped by triple digits. “
Instead of taking steps to prepare, they ignored the advice of one expert after another,” said Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Tex.). “People right now, as we speak, are dying because there have been inadequate supplies of PPE.”
While the percentage increase of exports to China was steep, they represent a small fraction of the overall U.S. need. Throughout the country, the shortage has forced hospitals, nursing homes and first responders to ration masks and other protective gear as they treat infected and high-risk patients, creating a secondary health crisis among first line providers.
In the early days of the covid-19’s exponential march across the globe, when it was still mostly contained in China, there was no widespread sense of crisis in the White House. But by the end of January, briefings to White House national security staff made clear that the danger of a major pandemic was real. By then seven Americans had fallen ill, and experts said the need for an adequate supply of protective gear should have been apparent.
Nonetheless, on Jan. 30, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said on Fox Business that the outbreak could “accelerate the return of jobs to North America” because companies would move factories away from impacted areas.

Thank You to the Washington Post and New York Times for making articles about the coronavirus free, not behind a paywall.
Also please note that the data visualizers are doing quite a job of producing animated and correlated maps of the virus spread and Trump’s words and actions. Here is one.
Here is another. Trump has promised to sue the creators. The UK Independent also has some other video clips at this link. All of them in Trump’s own words. I found myself looking at the people in the background of many of these video clips. Most are stone-faced, eyes staring ahead. The people in the background are all enabling Trump, some trying to minimize the damage he is doing but also sustaining public attention to his marathon propaganda campaigns.
Trump is not succeeding in running away from his lies, incompetence, and compulsive need to insult members of the press.

Funny, but I haven’t read anything about the number of companies that have now shifted their jobs to North America.
Trump was warned on January 3. Obviously neither he nor the Commerce Secretary were paying attention to the briefings. This is what happens when one spends time watching Fox & Friends and Fox Business.
There is incompetence on all levels of the Trump administration. We should all be anxious to ‘get back to work’ since only 2-3% of the population will die. That means a savings in $$ from Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. Whoopee!!

US corps exporting 1000% more PPE & ventilators to China in Jan & Feb were just operating according to capitalist SOP– not their job to look ahead & plan for protection of US populace. That’s govt’s job.
Just guessing here: that movement of goods would have been anticipated by a pandemic task force– had it not been disbanded in 2018 by Trump admin– which would have exerted pressure for all US corporate hands on deck. Immediate response by exec could have diverted the increased production to fed stockpile via Trump admin’s invoking the Defense Production Act on, say, Feb 1 instead of April 2. THAT’S TWO MONTHS WASTED. Impossible to know how many deaths associated with that particular delay…

INT. DAY. CORONAVIRUS BRIEFING MEETING
TRUMP (snorts Adderall and steps to the microphone)
First let me thank the members of the media who are here today. You’re fake news. Disgraceful.
And speaking of fake news, you don’t want to hear this, do you? Just once–OK?—I would like to hear you say, “Mr. President, how can I help you blame this on China, Obama, whatever?” But no. The media is no help. And the governors. Just as bad. No gratitude. I heard they were so rude, they were so fresh, they were nasty, no matter what I did. The battle is over. They thought they had us with this plague. But all we had to do is fix it. Incredible what we’ve been able to do. but they just say, horrible. You know that. Trump is horrible. So horrible. They make it up. They got sources. The sources don’t exist.
Just today, I spoke with governor De Sanctis of Florida. Good man. You have no idea how much election fixing it takes to get a good man like this elected governor. He’s opened the beaches back up. And named professional wrestling an essential business. Because he gets it. He really does. Like me. I get it. Gotta stop this pandemic. The governor—unlike some other governors I might mention like Cuomo and Whitmer and that guy in California—is very grateful. Anybody needs a test, they can get a test. Beautiful tests. So far, since this started, we have sent 2 tests for Chinavirus to the state of Florida. Thank you, Mr. President, he said. Your action incredible action is going to save lives. Great governor, knows what he’s doing. He not a crier, like some of these.
Speaking of which. We are at war with an invisible enemy. That’s why we are doing what Presidents have always done when there’s a war. Passing the buck. This thing—nobody could have predicted it. But I did. I stopped it before it even got started here in the United States by ending travel from China. But does the fake news media report that? No. So, people are dying. Hospitals are overwhelmed. That’s why we need to open everything back up. Important to follow the Trump guidelines for Social Distancing. Stand six feet apart. So I’d like to call Dr. Birx to stand up here right next to me. And Mike Pence. Thank you, Mike, for your response. Mike gets it. This is all about Trump and how great he is. Let me just say to all those patriotic Americans out there blocking with their AK47s, blocking the entrances to hospitals, thank you for your service. Liberate Michigan!
So, China lied about the pandemic. Hid it from the world. And from this rock group, the Who. That’s why we’re cutting all funding to the Who starting today. Because they do work in these third world countries. Foreigners. Brown people. We care about America. Am I right?
As we enter the next phase of the battle, we are continuing our relentless effort to destroy the environment. My administration is doing incredible things. Incredible. Not credible. What we’ve done is not credible. But I started with a broken system. We inherited a broken system. So broken. I spoke with world leaders this morning. They’re all saying. It’s incredible, Mr. President, what you’ve done. 360 million people. You’ve tested five of them. Obama ever have testing like that? We’ve done a job nobody would believe the job we’ve done. But the fake news, they view it as an election. Oh, Trump, he didn’t this he didn’t that. I told them, this is how you use this machine. We have machines, they don’t even know how to use them. Just like the Russia witch hunt. I’m honored by the fact that how I’ve responded. Good job. We’ve done a good job. Fantastic. We get rid of this plague, what we’re doing, with the PPE, the paycheck. I really get it. Any questions?

The accuracy of your transcript is quite impressive. But I don’t think it’s adderall. That wasn’t around in the 70s and 80s. It’s why he knows more about Columbian and Bolivian foreign policy than any president ever (at least one specific part of it). Explains why his sinuses are hollow.

It really is astonishing to watch how much his speech has deteriorated and how quickly. My transcript doesn’t even come close to rendering the bizarre syntax, the rambling, the confusion of his speech now. Pretty soon it will be completely impossible to parody him. I’ll just have to print a transcript. We’re very close to that now.

I have to wonder… how much of that federal stockpile was actually made in and purchased from China to begin with? I ask because when I could find no masks to buy in the US, I bought some at Amazon and wondered why they cost so much money. I’ve become used to paying pennies for most things from China, so $1 per mask seemed very high to me.
It turned out the masks I received were made in China and since they were also shipped from there, they sat in quarantine here for two weeks before they were delivered to me! In regard to the cost, I wondered about tariffs but I suspect the markup today has more to do with such items going back and forth between countries, so that a lot of profits could be made by middle men before such products reach actual consumers.
Politicians who do not prioritize people before profits, especially in a pandemic, need to be voted out of office!

Donald J. Trump is our “wartime President.” Therefore, no one is in charge. There’s no brain under that troll-doll hair of his; there’s nothing there except bile and pictures of his own sneering face tacked onto some 1950s photo of a hardbody lifeguard.

I have read more than once from people that once worked for Trump, that he has a lifelong history of being a super micromanager. No one does anything important in his organization without his approval and then if the idea fails, he blames someone else even though he approved it.
That means Trump approved of shipping those masks to China even though he will never admit it and like he has done so many times will say, “No one told me.”
However, I digress.
Shipping the masks and medical equipment to China is another example of Trump’s total incompetence explaining why he’s been through so many bankruptcies that added up to more than a billion dollars and those bankruptcies were not his only failures. He has launched and closed a long list of business ventures that failed but did not go through bankruptcy.
In addition, every single day, the world gets more examples of Trump’s malignant narcissism and incompetence.
