Trump aims to be our very own Il Duce. Having seen (on TV) the great military parades in North Korea, Moscow, and Beijing, where the Maximum Leader commands all attention, Trump wants the same adulation. He has joked about serving a third term because his base won’t let him leave. He has admired the fact that Kim is President for Life.
His delusions of his own magnificence are limitless. Any day now, I expect to see him decked out in a military u inform with epaulets, covered with decorations he awarded to himself. Designed, no doubt, by Ivanka.
Trump has redesigned the annual July 4 event as a celebration of himself.
The Washington Post describes the preparations here.
There is no estimate of the full cost of the parade because the last time he planned a military parade, the cost was estimated to be $92 million. Public outrage was so great that the parade was canceled. This time, no true cost estimates are available until the event is over.
There will be two Abrams tanks, each of which weigh 60-70 tons. Local officials worry that the area around the Lincoln Memorial is not strong enough to carry this weight. They are fearful of serious damage to underground storage areas. Trump also promises “brand-new” Sherman tanks of World War II vintage, which have not been produced for decades.
Meanwhile, the White House has said VIP tickets will be issued for members of the administration and their family members and friends. HuffPost reported Monday that the tickets are also going to Republican donors and political appointees, and the Republican National Committee confirmed that it had received passes to Trump’s address….
Trump intends to address the nation from the memorial, upending tradition and bringing extensive change to the annual Fourth of July fireworks display.
His “Salute to America,” with music, military demonstrations and flyovers by Air Force One, the Navy’s Blue Angels flight team and other aircraft, is to take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m…
Trump said Monday that this Fourth will be “like no other.”
But local officials and critics have complained that he is turning a nonpartisan celebration of the nation’s birthday into a political campaign event.
No president has been part of a Fourth of July celebration on the Mall in recent memory…
Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D), the District’s nonvoting delegate in Congress, said Monday that battle tanks could significantly damage the Mall, not long after the Park Service spent millions of dollars in public money to refurbish the site.
“These tanks, heavy equipment, and weapons of war have no place on the Mall at all, particularly as we celebrate the Fourth of July,” she said in a statement.
And Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) called on Trump to “personally reimburse” taxpayers for any damage done to local roads and bridges during the event.

In Trump’s America, chants of “USA, USA” are interchangeable with “Trump, Trump.” Those who refuse to stand for the national anthem are traitors deserving of prosecution. The right to free speech is reserved for hate speech. Critical reporting is simply “fake news.”
I abhor a nation that praises its military and wants them to parade down the streets. This is not N. Korea. Kim, whom Trump admires, has huge parades with very large missiles and huge numbers of tanks rolling down the road. The fact that these roads are made especially strong for these heavy tanks has taken money from N. Korea’s roads that mostly exist, if at all, in varying stages of gravel and dirt. Next to no cars are ever seen on N. Korean roads because people can’t afford cars. Trump apparently admires the worship of the N. Korean people. Why he is determined to not recognize is that the people in N. Korea live in total fear. Do not ever show any dissatisfaction for life. Do not admit that you are starving. That is enough to get you and your family sent away to a camp in which you will die or starve and possibly get beaten and most certainly you will be there and be continuously brain washed about the ‘greatness and ever-living love of Kim Jong Un towards his people.”
I will not watch the spectacle in Washington DC today, July 4th. I remember a country that was on the right track but is now in dangerous territory. Nobody should dictate to Congress and get his dictates fulfilled by Executive Orders. This is not the democracy that I envisioned.
Our shining light of a democracy is being taken over by ruthless people who bow to lobbyists and donors and don’t hear the words spoken by average people. This is not a democracy at work. It is a kakistocracy. [A kakistocracy is a system of government which is run by the worst, least qualified, or most unscrupulous citizens.]

I have no problem with the show of military. I enjoyed tanks and jeeps and soldiers when I was a kid. I would like to see our soldiers marching that are stationed in Afghanistan! Bring them home! If we didn’t have a military we wouldn’t be here. It’s the reason for it that I don’t like. Trump is showing off our power to the world. If we really wanted to show our power, we would also have floats showing our strength in helping the homeless, poor, recognizing the rights of all people regardless of race, color, creed, sex, or nationality. That is the true strength of America and the reason why people die to get here.

This is a truism. In similar fashion no stable genius would need to boast either.
I am not sure why your blog came to be on my feed, but I have enjoyed reading.

I am used to the president’s boasting, but yesterday’s speech wasn’t what I’m used to from him. It was first about unity and soothing divisions, and then about honored military history. After listening to it, I’m afraid this speech was not projecting power or the usual narcissistic boasting, but instead dangerous, jingoistic inciting. To gather in unity around the military is what a leader wants a country to do at the start of a war. That was a war speech.

I wonder how much of the speech Ivanka plagiarized.

This is just another Trump rally disguised as a national holiday. It’s an excuse to stir up and stoke chauvinism, jingoism, xenophobia and militarism.

Exactly right. As David Remnick of The Mew Yorkerwrote, it is a conflation of national holiday and campaign rally.
America is Trump. Trump is America.
Believe that and you are brainwashed.

Indeed. he called Trump Little Rocket Man! and saidr”Trump who talks about “my generals” and “my military,” has decided to turn the normally pacific Independence Day ceremonies in the capital into a martially tinged self-branding exercise. We are watching him blow hard into the balloon of his own ego. Trump is also trying to conflate a patriotic celebration with his reëlection campaign. The White House is doling out passes to Republican donors, members of the Republican National Committee, and other supporters.
According to the Washington Post, the Pentagon leadership has reacted to the increased militarization of the Fourth by “hiding out and hoping it all blows over.” Trump, of course, has spoken for “his” generals, saying that they are, in fact, “thrilled.”

Years ago, after the Gulf War, Bush Sr. held what was called the National Victory Celebration, which featured tanks and troop carriers and Patriot missile launchers. After the event, these were left sitting on the National Mall for some time for people to gawk at.
And all around them were signs announcing an upcoming event: the Festival of American Folklife.
I was living in D.C. at the time.
I will never forget that spectacle–seeing the signs for the Festival of American Folklife and looking beyond these at that sea of military hardware.
Yup, we are into making doilies, whittling, playing the Appalachian dulcimer, and shooting off laser-guided missiles.

I’ve been on the Mall on the 4th. It’s quite the show. But I don’t feel much like celebrating this 4th of July, what with our government running concentration camps where children fleeing violence and starvation are being brutally abused. This is no time for celebration but for mourning for all we have failed to remember. How much relief for refugees could be purchased with the cost of the Let’s Celebrate Donald Trump event being held on the National Mall today?
I hope to live long enough to see Trump and Miller in the dock before the International Criminal Court. charged with crimes against humanity–kidnapping and child abuse and reckless endangerment and violation of people’s legal right to seek asylum.
Under any circumstances, Trump’s attempt to turn the nation’s 4th of July celebration into the Apotheosis of Donald Trump would be disgusting. Under these, it is unspeakably shameful and sickening, utterly immoral.

Trump is so completely unsuitable to be President and is breaking norms left and right. I can only hope we make it to the election because there is an enormous danger that we will not. Trump IS different than any Democrat running in the primary and those who believe differently are wrong and almost always white and not Muslim.

I was thinking more of a lightning strike tonight. With Pence standing next to him. We could then tell the religious right that they have strayed and God’s wrath could soon be visiting them as well.
Took a lot of suffering to have the other guy hanging from his feet.

I’m not going to give a political speech here today, OK? Except. You know. Ha ha. I’ll just say. The Democrats. The Democrats—they didn’t want this to happen. They don’t love America. Well, we love America. That’s why people support Donald Trump. How many people here today? 12 million? Obama never got crowds like that. And the military. Not to get political, but they love Trump. So proud. So proud. Just look at this crowd. 36 million people. That’s history, folks. And Ivanka. Beautiful, huh? Good genes, right? I have the best genes. So, Happy Birthday, America. God bless. And Keep America Great Again. Make America. You know, Covfefe.

Bob Shepherd: “Just look at this crowd. 36 million people.”
The estimated total population of the US is is 329,103,944 as of Thursday, July 4, 2019, based on the latest United Nations estimates.
Every one of those people will be attending this huge event and all will want to hear every word that Trump speaks. [This is what Fox will state. Trump will verify how accurate that count is.]

Thank you for that correction, Carol.
329 million people in this crowd. Of course, the Democrats will say, it wasn’t that many. Fake News! Losers. No collusion! But they didn’t predict I would win the last election, right? By a landslide. But when they try to steal the next one, we’ll just do it over until we get it right.
