Helen Gym is a firebrand member of Philadelphia’s City Council. She leads the way on progressive issues. She got her start as a parent advocate fighting for public schools.
Now there is speculation she will run for Mayor in 2023.
Helen will be a keynote speaker at the convention of the Network for Public Education on March 28-29, 2020.
Join us in Philadelphia for another great meeting!

I am thrilled that Helen Gym is an advocate for the people of Philly. Too many entrenched politicians become part of a machine that is dedicated to the status quo in which they line their pockets and ignore their constituents. I hope she runs for mayor in the future as Philly needs an idea person as captain of the ship. She is an advocate for public education, and she keeps a watchful eye on opportunists trying to transfer public money into their own pockets.
As a woman, she faces more scrutiny than men. As an Asian woman, she faces even more hurdles. She is an activist, and she has the people behind her. Isn’t that supposed to be what democracy is all about?
Women like Warren, AOC and Gym should forge ahead and do what they know needs to be done. They should ignore all the misogyny and naysayers. The public schools desperately need a friend that will confront the charter lobby. As long as Gym is doing what the people want, they will show up and vote for her. She should be a dynamic keynote speaker for NPE.

Helen Gym is a fierce and effective advocate for public schools. Senator Warren, however, has not issued a policy statement and has a history of support of school vouchers/privatization. I have no belief that Senator Warren is or will be a friend to public education (Her TFA advisor doesn’t inspire confidence). I hope she will prove me wrong.
