Trump went to Orlando today to launch his re-election campaign. On the same day, the Orlando Sentinel published an editorial announcing the newspaper’s endorsement for 2020: Anyone but Trump.
Donald Trump is in Orlando to announce the kickoff of his re-election campaign.
We’re here to announce our endorsement for president in 2020, or, at least, who we’re not endorsing: Donald Trump.
Some readers will wonder how we could possibly eliminate a candidate so far before an election, and before knowing the identity of his opponent.
Because there’s no point pretending we would ever recommend that readers vote for Trump.
After 2½ years we’ve seen enough.
Enough of the chaos, the division, the schoolyard insults, the self-aggrandizement, the corruption, and especially the lies.
Then I would suggest that the Democrats not try to shove Biden down our throats. We already know that dog don’t hunt. Sure, the polls say he’s ahead. That’s because polls target landline phones, which no one under the age of 60 has.
Biden needs to RETIRE and go away.
And dpt needs to go away, too. Good gawd. Unbelievable.
Now you are making things up.
Polls also adjust for demographics. Registration data at lest here in NY gives Name, age, sex and party affiliation of all voters in a household. This Data is public information.

Are you sure you are not a Russian bot. LOL
at least
“Are you sure you are not a Russian bot.”
You used to be better than that, Joel. Disappointing.
Russian bots are everywhere. How do you know they are not bots?
Anyone who is still insisting that there is no difference between Trump and even a conservative Democrat like Biden is a bot. If Kavanaugh, Gorsuch, and the slew of far right federal judges are not enough of evidence, surely anyone who believes our country is almost exactly like it was when Obama was President is either a bot or a liar.
When you say “the Democrats not try to shove Biden down our throats” are you referring to the majority of voters who vote in the primary voting for the candidate that they prefer?
We live in a democracy. I don’t prefer Biden but if the majority of voters in the primary do, I will certainly decide to vote for him and not choose to have two more Kavanaughs to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
I keep thinking about how wonderful it would be if we had two liberal Supreme Court Justices instead of Trump’s choices and wonder what kind of person would insist that having more right wing justices was a small price to pay when you can “punish” Americans who voted in the Democratic primary and preferred Biden or another candidate.
When you attack the majority of voters for “shoving” their candidate down your throat, you are saying that you hate democracy.
Biden’s latest comments to the wealthy don’t help his or the Democratic cause. While Trump enriches the wealthy, he talks a different game.
Just like in 2016, an unwillingness to jeopardize the flow of donations, leads the candidate to mince words about Social Security protection, tax increases for the rich (supported by 75% of Americans), etc.
It would have been wonderful to just have some more moderate Supreme Court Justices.
Unless Biden falters in the debates, it is likely the DNC will nominate status quo Joe. I will vote for Bernie in the primary. I Bernie wins, I will be thrilled. I hope all you fellow “lefties” will swallow your pride and show up and vote for Biden, if the likely scenario plays out. This is not a time to quibble about Democrats. We must put on a game face and vote for any Democrat over Trump. We must not set the stage for four more years of this garbage.
Yes, agree 10,000%. Any one of the Democrats would be light years better than Trump and his gang of incompetents. And then there are the SCOTUS and the lower courts, always crucial. Trump has already done enough damage to the courts by his selection of a record number of far right wing libertarians who will be there for decades.
“The DNC” doesn’t nominate anyone.
VOTERS in the primary choose to vote for the candidate they prefer and the one with the majority of votes wins.
They pull the strings behind the process.
And the party apparatus has no connection to media figures who portray various candidates in certain manners?. Now perhaps the narrative was being generated elsewhere but when Buttigieg entered the race; you would have thought it was the “second coming.” For a candidate who had no policy positions at the time. And running a close second was “Beto born to run”
Of course what they did have in common was neither would ever hurt the corporate bottom line. The party could not possibly have anything to do with that?.
What do you mean “pull the strings”?
I am confused because on the one hand, they are supposedly pulling the strings for Biden, but on the other hand they are pulling the strings for Buttigieg.
And they apparently are not pulling the strings for Elizabeth Warren, but I presume that if she starts leading and winning primaries then she will be attacked for being the “DNC’s candidate”?
Buttigieg is getting the same attention that Beto got because he is young and new. But the reason that VOTERS may end up voting for Buttigieg is not because they are being tricked into it by “the party” but because Buttigieg is actually doing a pretty decent job of defending Democratic principles. On the other hand, voters might get tired of Buttigieg just like they seemed to get tired of Beto.
I really wish I could wave a magic wand and make every Democrat embrace the most progressive policies, but I can’t. Just like the DNC can’t wave a wand and make every Democrat embrace the most right wing corporate policies that some people seem to believe is the only thing the DNC cares about.
NYC public school parent
Biden had not entered the race at the time.
I never ever claimed that Hillary stole the last election, I am not dienne. That is not the same as saying there was no party influence. Now it is altogether possible that media outfits and their news and editorial staffs come up with independent appraisals of candidates. It is also possible that party insiders from donors to elected officials do communicate with media executives and personalities. It does not have to rise to the level of conspiracy.
So how many times have you heard a savant tell you “the President thinks” beside the absurdity of putting thought and this President in the same sentence; How the hell does Peter Baker or any reporter actually know what the President actually thinks. Even if he had asked him. We can tell what he says and what he does but not know what he thinks. And as that the reporter never asked the President he is asking sources.
He is not asking Joel nor NYCPSP he is asking WH and party sources. And that is the nature of reporting that influences opinion. Of course party insiders are tipping the scales. It is built into the process.
So not exactly the DNC, but there is the famous story of the Daily News interview of Sanders. The interview that Juan González claimed was uneventful till, it was handed to the Clinton campaign. Then the scathing editorial was issued the next morning and 21 negative Bernie articles in WaPo in a day just happens.
And are we going to deny that the Clinton Campaign staff was not the synonymous with the party and Sanders was the relative outsider. Podesta was not the head of the Obama transition in 2008? Can you envision the Daily news
turning the Hillary interview over to the Sanders Campaign for comment before issuing an opinion.
The Media sources are the party insiders. And those that reporters have contact
with the most have influence.
The insidious part of manufactured consent is that it is not usually obvious. My long Island School District is almost the population of South Bend Indiana my Town twice the size. If the Huntington Town supervisor ran for President you would never get to know his name.
Beto and Buttigieg had far more attractive characteristics than their youth. At a time that the front runners were Sanders and Warren the Bs were the corporate friendly alternative to the Party insiders. Thus they wound up with far more air time than they deserved. “Born to Run”
Trump’s ruling class- Bill Gates, the Koch brothers and heirs like those of Sam Walton give more aid to the nation’s most dangerous foreign enemies than at any prior time in history. In replacing democracy with colonialism, they have turned the U.S. population into raging, miserable loners and tribes with high rates of suicide, domestic violence and drug addiction. Pandering to the false prophets of religion so that they will drive their followers into colonialism is so base it sets a standard for American immorality.
Media Bias FAct Check has this to say about the Orlando Sentinel:
“in review, the Orlando Sentinel covers local and Florida news through the use of staff journalist. There is minimal use of loaded language such as this: Sheriff Scott Israel begins suspension fight in Senate.
National and world news is typically derived from the Associated Press.
Editorially, they have historically been known to be conservative leaning, however in recent years they have endorsed Democratic Presidential Candidates such as John Kerry, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. On 6/18/2019, The Sentinel published an editorial declaring they would not endorse President Donald Trump in 2020: Our Orlando Sentinel endorsement for president in 2020: Not Donald Trump. A thorough review of the editorial page indicates a left leaning bias in story selection.”
I think the Republican Party lost this newspaper because it moved too far toward the Extreme Right and away from where it was decades ago. In fact, it seems that the Democratic Party is now what the Republican Party was before Reagan.
Yes. I remember the Orlando Sentinel riding the gravy train of school choice, merit pay, etc years ago, primarily through one of its columnists. Interestingly, that columnist left the newspaper to work on the media team for the area’s largest school district, which is also the 8th largest in the country.
They’ve turned and are now doing an excellent job of criticizing the overemphasis on testing, the lack of adequate funding, and unaccountable private schools that receive vouchers.
People can change opinions when they see what they believed is wrong. That’s what Diane Ravitch did. She had the courage of her convictions, and she has gone far beyond that by starting this blog and NPE.
Trump has already attacked them with his usual “FAKE NEWS”. It seems he doesn’t know the difference between the Editorial page/Op Ed and News but that isn’t a surprise. The only thing Trump knows is how to stir up hate and divisiveness through his 10,000+ lies since winning the Electoral College but not the popular vote.
Yes, there are Republicans who are horrified by IQ45: https://twistedsifter.com/2019/05/liberty-crumbling-sand-sculpture-by-damon-langlois/
Trump’s new campaign slogan:
Keep America Grating
or KAG. Which is an extremely impolite term in Orchish.
This is the replacement for MAGA, which means, ofc, “Moscow’s Agent Governing America.”
Oops. That would be Orcish.
Does that mean Trump is Saruman or “Sauron”?
No, a giant Smeagol, aka, Jabba the Part-time President.
Smeagol is a genus of small air-breathing sea slugs of the upper intertidal zone, named after the character Gollum in the Tolkien world.
Politico prints Trump’s weekly schedule.
He has lunch one day with Pence. Another day he has lunch with Pompeo. He goes to a ceremony to present awards on another day.
Each day, his actual schedule has no work at all.
He is not even a part time president.
He is a slacker who is dreaming about his next golf game except when he sees polls on TV that make him angry.
Pompeo evidently is awaiting the Rapture. Aie yie yie.
I wish the Rapture would come and take the whole Trump swamp away.
Trump is furious at FOX News for reporting polls showing him losing to any Democrat.
Welll…here we go again down the road w/an already flawed candidate–Biden–who, BTW, just had a fundraiser w/fossil fuel billionaires (Food & Water Watch/N.Y. Communities for Change just held a protest in front of the fundraiser site–on Democracy Now! 6/19/19).
&, again, Joe! is being touted & flaunted by the msm w/much, much less coverage of Bernie (& Warren, who is rising in the polls). &, please remind me again, just who is Tulsi Gabbard? (Not a Jeopardy answer; she has been totally shut down.)
NO press for her!
The same evil plan hatched by the DLCC/DNC as in 2016 to stifle Bernie, to silence his supporters & to shut down his delegates at the 2016 Dem National Convention.
That having been said, what else can we do aside from whining here? Write letters to Bernie (& Warren & Tulsi) demanding that any & all primary election fraud (turning off machine security–Ohio), poor oversight of caucuses (Iowa & Nevada), purging voters from the rolls (NYC)– be CHALLENGED by the candidate or by the campaign–that is the ONLY way to stop the widespread fraud.
If we truly want to beat IQ45 we have to, first, ensure that our votes count as cast.
One way is to vote ON Election Day, as paper ballots are safer.
Participate in citizen audits.
And write those letters (Nina Turner just took a big bunch of them to Bernie.).
We all worked too hard (& gave more than $27!!) in 2016 to have that happen again.
And it could lead to the reelection of…
I know Biden is a neo-liberal corporate Democrat but … Any Democrat is better than Trump, the malignant narcissist, psychopath, promoter of hate, lover of dictators MAGA Man – “Moscow’s Agent Governing America”.
If the Democratic Party swings away from corporations and back to progressives, it will not happen overnight. It will take time for voters to elect enough AOC’s for them to become the party’s leaders.
How long did it take the neo-liberals, corporate Democrats, to subvert the Party?
I wonder if some of the commenters here know that the “DNC screwed Bernie Sanders” riff was Russian-created and -disseminated. Bottom line, it just wasn’t true.
As to Biden, personally, I think his time has come and gone (Bernies Sanders too). I far prefer Elizabeth Warren. But, having said that, Biden is a far better alternative than the Traitor-in-Chief.
From the Orlando Sun-Sentinel editorial on Trump:
“After 2½ years we’ve seen enough…Enough of the chaos, the division, the schoolyard insults, the self-aggrandizement, the corruption, and especially the lies…So many lies — told out of ignorance, laziness, recklessness, expediency or opportunity…Trump claimed in 2017 that he lost the popular vote because millions of people voted illegally (they didn’t). In 2018 he said North Korea was no longer a nuclear threat (it is). And in 2019 he said windmills cause cancer (they don’t). Just last week he claimed the media fabricated unfavorable results from his campaign’s internal polling (it didn’t)…Trump has diminished our standing in the world. He reneges on deals, attacks allies and embraces enemies…This nation must never forget that humiliating public moment in Helsinki in 2018 when [Trump] chose to accept Vladimir Putin’s denials of Russian interference in the 2016 election over the unanimous assessment of the American intelligence community…Such a betrayal…Trump declares his love for North Korea’s Kim Jong-un, a genuine villain who starves and enslaves his people and executes his enemies with antiaircraft guns and flamethrowers…We can do better. We have to do better.”
We. Have. To. Do. Better.
“I wonder if some of the commenters here know that the “DNC screwed Bernie Sanders” riff was Russian-created and -disseminated. Bottom line, it just wasn’t true.”
Actually, there are heaps and heaps of documentation of exactly how badly the DNC screwed Bernie. Six coin tosses in a row, and changing caucus rules in Hillary’s favor at the last minute, and electioneering at polling sites, and half the voting rolls of Brooklyn disappearing, etc., etc., etc. I had a friend who has worked the polls in Arizona for nearly two decades and he said he’s never seen anything like it. And when he tried to point out the problems, he got death threats from Hillary’s crowd, including against his then-seventeen-year-old special needs daughter. And he’s just one person – there are hundreds of other similar accounts. Sorry, but every bit of fact that you don’t like is “Russian-created”.
BTW, if you want the best documentation for how badly the DNC screwed Bernie just look to the horse’s mouth – the DNC’s own emails available on Wikileaks. Whether that was da Russkies or a disgruntled DNC staffer, either eay we owe a debt of gratitude.
Challenge you to cite the exact wording of an e-mail that you believe it documentation of the DNC’s screwing Bernie.
It’s funny how when Trump’s own son invites Russians offering dirt into a meeting in Trump Tower with the very top campaign officials to discuss it, you refuse to accept that is evidence of any conspiracy.
So what is the wording of these e-mails you claim show something corrupt going on?
Let me guess — when someone told someone else that the Flint debate would actually talk about the water supply!!! OMG who would ever have known of such a thing! However, it was interesting that only Bernie seemed to know exactly how to answer a very specific question about the pipes almost as if he was told the very particular question in advance instead of being given an completely gratuitous “heads up” that the water supply would be discussed in Flint. Of course we don’t have his campaign’s e-mails so let’s assume they did not get the heads up that the Flint water supply was going to be discussed in Flint and he was totally blindsided by hear that!
It’s always funny to see the case crumble when those who claim some great corruption actually have to cite evidence. Like not just some e-mail, but inviting the people giving dirt into a meeting with top campaign officials. oh yeah, you don’t see anything wrong with that.
I’m sure you can simply say some more nasty lies instead to convince people they are right to say Trump is no different than the evil Democrats.
Almost anyone, even Biden, even a dog, even a skunk, even a rattlesnake, would be better than Trump.
If Satan appears and ran against Trump, I’d vote for the fallen archangel over MAGA Man, the traitor known as Moscow’s Agent Governing America. the malignant narcissist and psychopath that loves to brew hate, who worships dictators and hates democracy and freedom for anyone but him.
In fact, if the choice was a bucket full of vomit/piss/diarrhea vs Trump, I’d vote for that bucket and even drink from it when the bucket won.
BTW, what specifically makes Biden better than Trump? The fact that his verbal diarrhea isn’t quite as severe? The fact that he’s slightly less grope-y? Do you think his actual policies will be any better? Will he get involved in any fewer international military conflicts? (Check Obama’s record on that.) Will he be any better on immigration? (Again, check Obama’s record.) Will he be any less corporate-friendly? Any better for the environment? Less supportive of privatization? Again, Obama’s record, Obama’s record and Obama’s record.
Sure, he comes in a prettier, more “statesmanlike” package. Sorry, but that’s not good enough for me or for many, many lefties like me. Go ahead and spit in our faces again. That worked well for you in 2016.
It worked well for you in 2016. You got the candidate you said was no worse than the evil Democrat and you got exactly the Supreme Court he promised that you knew you’d get. Now you are hoping for more. Funny how I don’t hear any “lefties” like Bernie or AOC repeating your lies.
One reason I like AOC is that she can be “lefty” without trying to destroy the country for non-white people. It’s a shame that some of her elders don’t have her wisdom.
We don’t have to spit in AOC’s face. We don’t even have to vote for Biden. But if the majority of primary voters end up choosing Biden or perhaps the “evil” Elizabeth Warren or the “evil” someone else, anyone who doesn’t support that candidate is supporting Trump.
They own Trump and his Supreme Court nominees.
If Bernie wins the nomination, and people who supported Biden start saying all kinds of lies about Bernie and insisting that he is no better than Trump and it doesn’t matter that Trump wins because that will “show” the Bernie voters how corrupt he is, then those people would be just as wrong as you are.
Final comment before I go earn my daily dollar. What many of you seem not to understand is that the DNC does not have your interests at heart. While they’d prefer to win with a neoliberal candidate, they’d rather lose to Trump than win with an actual progressive. Trump is far better for their donor class than Bernie.
Agree!!
” they’d prefer to win with a neoliberal candidate, they’d rather lose to Trump than win with an actual progressive.”
Talk about projecting your own actions onto others.
You are the one who keeps insisting that you’d rather have Trump than anyone but the progressive of your choice. There is no evidence that the DNC would rather lose with Trump but that doesn’t stop you from making the most ugly and dishonest smears and projecting your own desire to stick it to the country by repeating the lie that Trump is no worse than any “neoliberal” (which is a nonsensical term that covers Democrats with very different views of the world that some truly dishonest haters like to smear as all corrupt).
You are the one who made it clear you would rather lose to Trump than having anyone who you deemed too “neoliberal”.
Trump is far better for the privileged white non-Muslim angry DNC-haters than someone who would actually put justices on the Supreme Court who would give America its very best chance to have a more progressive country.
You unwittingly reveal your own desires here.

“the victory fund agreement was not illegal, but it sure looked unethical”…..and that statement right there is why there was no enthusiasm for HRC and what she would offer as POTUS. The DNC and HRC paved the way for Trump by keeping people home on election day. It wasn’t that Dems decided to vote FOR Trump, they just decided not to vote at all because they know the system is rigged. People are tired of voting for the lesser of 2 evils, we are tired of voting for empty slogans and promises (Hope, Change….none for us common people, though!!), and we are tired of the “political machine” thinking we are too stupid to make the right decisions. Feel the Bern!!
YES!!!
LisaM, a bit of revision to your allegations.
“The Russians and the GOP propaganda campaigns, the DNC, and HRC paved the way for Trump by keeping people home on election day.”
The Russians and the GOP followed a similar plan.
The DNC and HRC fumbled around making mistakes and didn’t have any plans.
Thank you, dienne77 & Bob Shepherd. And–there is much, much more documentation of election fraud. For those of you who are stuck on the meaningless word “rigged,” that’s &NOT what it was (& is). Americans had better wake up & realize that our votes are not secure, & I am NOT talking about Russia or any other foreign influence. As I’d suggested–many times, here, read Code Red by Jonathan Simon. See the doc, The Best Democracy Money Can Buy by Greg Palast (& read Greg Palast/view him on YouTube). Join up with your local election protection group. (In ILL-Annoy, it’s the IL Ballot Integrity Project, or I.B.I.P.; Chicago & Cook County: Clean Count Cook County).
And..vote ON Election Day–“paper (ballots) is safer!”
Well, here we go again, it’s deja vu all over again for the progressive ideological purists who will not vote for any Democrat except Bernie or Elizabeth, maybe. But wait there’s more, many of the ideological purists view Bernie and Warren as sell outs and phonies. I will vote for the Democrat, Bernie first and then whomever D in the general election. Remember the SCOTUS and the lower courts.
With you there, Mr. Jersey!
Biden and the Democratic messaging machines (e.g. CAP and Third Way) will get donations from the wealthy. Then, their PR will omit the selling points that get votes e.g. vote Dem or the courts will be lost, no cuts to Social Security, etc. The Repub. candidate who has a PR team driven to win gets elected with the help of Fox and other status quo groups like network news and newspapers. The Dem’s wealthy donors have another win.
No one (at least, not me) is saying they aren’t going to vote for the Dem candidate if Bernie & Warren don’t win, & I don’t think other people who are writing here are saying that, either. What I AM
saying is something that has been said for a long time (&, again, some aren’t listening)–it’s time to nip election manipulation in the bud, before one has to hold her/his nose at the polls. This is the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment which we all know was a hard-won battle. The sanctity of the vote–just like public education–is the cornerstone of our democracy and, I’m sorry, but I take voting seriously, and I don’t like…cheating.
If you’re not concerned that ballot boxes are stuffed, that security devices are turned off on machines or that people who are registered are purged off voter rolls–well, that’s on you, Joe. But I’m not having it–any of it. Starting with the primaries, misappropriation of votes must be accounted for. & I mean that whether we’re talking Bernie, Biden, Hickenlooper, Harris, Buttigieg or any candidates.
If we Americans cannot keep our primaries honest & above-board, we’re not America.
&–you know–how did everyone feel when Stacy Abrams was cheated–literally cheated–out of the office she would clearly have won had there not been outright illegal shenanigans?
& now, just look what’s happened in Georgia.
More than disgraceful. & good on Tiffany Haddish for refusing to perfrom there.
It’s the voted in the general election, not the primary, which were manipulated.
And I absolutely agree with you that election security and the right wing shenanigans which makes it as hard as possible for Democrats to vote should be addressed with urgency.
Another rally, another pack of lies: https://www.cnn.com/2019/06/19/politics/fact-check-trump-orlando-rally/index.html
